Great paint job! Simple and well executed, this looks great on WW2 miniatures, it even reminds me a bit of how the original un-restored war movies from the 50s and 60s look.

Start from the beginning, and when you're finished? Stop. ;D Simplest way of painting, right? I think we can tend to overthink some of our methods, particularly for gaming figures. If I were painting for a museum I'd be way more careful, but I just want some dudes on the table to look roughly accurate!

Great looking.. I've always favored historically close for my WW2 Mini's
@JohnnyH19824 жыл бұрын
Wicked tutorial, as someone who would ID as "detail challenged" in that, I get so bogged down on the small stuff that one mini takes far too long to complete... this video might see me start to move some units from half done to fully done fairly quickly. Thanks
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it! It can be easy to get stuck in all the tiny things, and camo is probably one of the first things to absolutely kill your painting speed. The thing is that it's also relatively easy to cut corners on it and once that model's on the table you'll never think twice about it not being accurate. ;D

this is a timely tutorial. :) I am working on the British Airborne Starter box this week.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
Have fun! The starter box is actually a really awesome Airborne army, period. 😀 Strictly speaking the Market Garden selectors usually don't allow you to take armoured support, but if you stick to the generic reinforced platoon selector and take what's historically appropriate you can still slide in things like Shermans from XXX Corps, or even attached Tetrarch tanks if you want to stick to 'Airborne only' style kit.
@Kaddith4 жыл бұрын
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio I was thinking of a Tetrarch :) Really excited to get to work on it. Once the starter is done I have the Pegasus Bridge box to get to as well. The bridge build is a little overwhelming to think about atm.

This is really helpful, I am about to do a bunch of Rangers but I will be adding decals. I am wondering if you might consider tackling a ranger or other US infantry with decals and how you would approach that today. I am assuming you would apply decals and then use Agrax Earthshade afterward? Then a coat of flat varnish?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio11 ай бұрын
Decals after shading is how I usually do mine. At this scale, it might seem more realistic to shade the decal along with the rest of the uniform, but it'll just make them much harder to see - and what a lot of work getting them on to just have them disappear! 😅 So I paint, shade, highlight if I'm going to, then it's decals and varnish.

Great video, sorry I'm late to the party. But I wanted to ask I want to do polish paratroopers what colour would you recommend for their berets?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio3 жыл бұрын
Something like Vallejo Black Grey or German Grey will work well as a really dark, aaalmost black finish that you can shade for a bit of depth and then highlight traditionally.

Could you recommend a brush on primer alternative to Skeleton Bone? Would Vallejo Skeleton Bone work just as well?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio3 жыл бұрын
Specific primers are formulated slightly differently to ordinary paint. With Vallejo's line of airbrush primers you can also get a fairly decent result by brushing them on in a couple of thin coats. The Skeleton Bone doesn't matter too specifically; any light or off-white primer will work just fine.

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Verisimilitude is more important than authenticity for tabletop gaming! You _want_ your models to stand out, not blend in. so, like you, I try to go for something that suggests the concept but is more vivid. It's why I actually like the more vibrant second example, myself.

This is from Warlord Games for their Bolt Action range. If you're looking for where to get started, they do some really ace starter collections with free rulebooks and such. store.warlordgames.com/products/get-started-with-bolt-action-british-airborne?aff=10 You can of course buy the miniatures by themselves, but I think it pays to at least have the 'Armies of Great Britain' book so you can see how they're supposed to be armed! Think of it like a Codex for comparison.
