I’m absolutely guilty of neglecting the fundamentals because they’re not as interesting… I definitely want to try out doing studies like these!
@sael5084 Жыл бұрын
You really should I did that mistake too for 3 years. Only copied reference of real life or peoples artwork and it did 0 help to me. Only made me use the pen better on paper but that's it. I've actually started to study anatomy and figure drawing books now and it really makes you see things differently. Try Michael Hampton figure drawing book I recommend it. Not much text and very important fundamentals for drawing bodies and gesture etc. Hopefully I can apply the knowledge well ❤❤

Yes it absolutely is. My recommendation (how I got over this) is to really try and stop thinking of getting some kind of result, and instead just enjoy the process itself. Go into every session with no expectations, especially when you're new. Also, try to avoid setting any kind of timeline like "I'm gonna get good at drawing in X days/months/years". If you can get yourself in the headspace where you can accept that you might not like the current result, and don't feel pressured to get good fast, then you'll surprise yourself with how much fun you can have!

personally I recommend getting an anatomy encyclopedia cuz you can see every single muscle where it connects to the bone landmarks and how muscles look when stretched or compressed and for every action there is a reaction and make your sketches look like the muscles but not the actual muscle just a shape that looks like it and then flesh it out later and I recommend getting books about the subjects you want to study cuz they really help and try to make gesture drawing continues and smooth you don't need any muscles just the simplest shapes you can use. (also quick note if you can get colored pencils use them for the under sketch and then draw on them after fading them a bit for me when making characters and not studying I use red and blue for clothes/armour and I fade them with a kneaded eraser then draw on them and very important thing don't be afraid of making mistakes and just have fun with it cuz you don't want to feel like you're entitled to make it look good just do your best and with time and practice you'll get better) btw I'm trad so this is for the trad artists out there and well a lot of those things work on digital too and I do both actually

I noticed that you're style of drawing is analytical and structured, the gesture drawings are not loose which is totally OK because you simply follow your nature, but how long does a gesture drawing session lasts? I feel like you capture many elements in a fast amount of time
@robot7338 Жыл бұрын
from my experience, dont worry about hyper fast gesture drawings or anything, but aim for 10 mins tops at the start and lower your time as you get better. learn body landmarks to capture those elements very quickly. niro has found a great way to do this with the placement of the torso and hips in ovals and rectangles, but whatever way works for you is good.

If time limits are super important, limit yourself to 1 minute per gesture sketch. The amount of sketches is unimportant just building the muscle memory is. Finish your session with a 5 minute sketch and indulge yourself with extra detail.

This is a really, really, well made video. Im a Games Designer, so i’m not just studying art, but also programming and psychology, so i’ve always feared how to fit all of this stuff in, how to break it all down and actually learn it all. I knew what I needed to learn, but didn’t know how to go about it beyond “gesture drawing and anatomy”. If you’re at university there should be free classes you can go to where you can draw from a model in person. This is very useful to get a better understanding of depth imo, I do about 2 hours of this a week. Otherwise, there may be other places you can go to, to do this. I also know some people learn from using a mirror.
