Nice upload, Woody. Beautiful blue sky. I use to prune my currant bushes in february/march. The black currant cuttings smells like nothing else. Have a productive week on your plot and keep warm my friend.

I hope so too. It seemed to have started that way this morning. Just as quick as it came it went before I could see it. We also had a good snow day before yesterday. Perhaps I should do a video on Alaskan winters. God Bless

Wow this is totally a new experience for me as we live in Dubai and we don’t have any bushes but in summer holiday we go to London where we go to farm pick own cranberries and all berries, never thought they have to trim the bushes. I think this is a right place for me to see different amazing things. Waiting for more videos

Thanks Woody. Those Felco secateurs are awesome. I watched Cliff at Castle Hill Gardens demonstrate how to disassemble and clean them. Fortunately he also showed us how to put them back together again (he's a pro...). 😂🤣😃 There's a local shop that sells them here & THEY'RE ON MY CHRISTMAS LIST (I'm shouting just in case Santa's in the vicinity...).

Hi Marie, yes those Felco's are over twenty years old and were probably one of the best presents I ever had! I've just had to replace the cutting blade in that time as the original got worn down with use :-) you can't go wrong with Felco's. have a great week ahead my friend :-)

Blue winter skies in the Lake District, what is not to like! Perhaps you could help me? You mentioned you use Falco Number 8s, I am very confused about the Falco range, and need a good pair of secateurs (for Christmas ;-) ). Can you tell me why you chose the #8s, and / or can you give me an idea of what the differences are between all of them? I noted your previous reply to one of my questions and I am waiting to 'pounce' on my donor apple for scion wood in Feb! (Making use of baby bel wax ;-) )

Hello Gordon, nice to hear from you. The Felco's were a present so not really my 'choice', however a quick google search shows that number 7+8 models are the top of the Felco range and just have different handles - others are designed for left handed use or have a longer blade for two handed use, then there is an 'anvil' design felco pruner. IMO i'm entirely happy with my number 8 and have only had to replace the cutting blade in 20 years. hope that helps :-) kind regards Woody

Good info Woody. I only have small 2 year old current bushes. When should I start pruning thanks.
@cumbrianhomestead
@cumbrianhomestead 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Greta, sounds like you won't need to do any pruning until end of next years season - of course there will be variables - just try and assess how much old wood is present versus one or two year old wood. hope that helps my friend. Woody

Areet.is it really important to prune bushes and will that work for redcurrents and gooseberry bushes too?
@cumbrianhomestead
@cumbrianhomestead 5 жыл бұрын
eh up mucka! yeah, all soft fruit bushes benefit from pruning - however redcurrants are pruned differently (the same as gooseberries) I've a video going up at weekend that shows the difference between unpruned and pruned - but I have a longer one I did last year (see playlist) that show how t prune Gooseberries in detail. Basically, on redcurrants and gooseberry, you are pruning back new side growths to 1-3 buds, these will form fruit spurs the next year or the year after (so they fruit on older wood as opposed to blackcurrant). Hope that is helpful my friend :-)

I was just doing some research on currants. Do you know they were banned in the US for the longest time? Apparently they considered it a threat to the logging industry. 🙄😆
@cumbrianhomestead
@cumbrianhomestead 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Guys, no I'd no idea about that at all - why would they consider it a threat (unless they suspected it carried some sort of disease that affects trees or something???) fascinating stuff!
