One tip came to me as I was doing my readings: research the background of the author. Especially for the readings in social sciences. I feel like the author’s identity provides a rich backdrop to his writing. I also love to find a short video of the author speaking so I can kinda read it in his accent, voice, intonation. And great tips, Vee, thanks so much for sharing!

crazy enough as an actor this is a great time. I always learn about the playwrights of plays and then listen to the playwrights talk - it helps with the rhythm of the characters. It shouldn't be a surprise but writers find a way into all of their works.

Oh god that does help! I think that I often understand better when I know the author. I often spend a little extra time reading the preface and about the author section to help myself know the tone and intention of the author. This is crazy.

what i summarize: 1. black red purple note taking 2. read with purpose 3. print out the reading materials and highlight it with 2 different colors (for what u know, and what u don't) 4. making summary to each paragraph (u can use it to check whether u understand about the topic or not or maybe u need more info about it) 5. table note taking (what do i want to know, what did i learn, what do u remember, what do u think) 6. critical thinking (always ask question while reading?)

Vee, you did give a lot of good tips how to do critical reading because I was very poor at it during high school and university. Whenever I did critical readings for my MA in Classical Studies, I read and took notes, but I was very poor at writing it out. I had a lot of difficulty arguing and attacking it. I had the tendency of describing and narrating. I knew how to reference. I understood the rules of quotation and how to do a bibliography. Where I suffered in academics was essay writing. Vee, you are certainly a lot better at me in doing critical reading and writing essays.

VEE! THANK YOU SO MUCH! ❤️ As someone with ADHD, it is SO HARD to focus and retain information. I get distracted VERY easily and I’m very forgetful, and it’s truly SOOO frustrating and stressful!! I’m gonna try out these reading/note taking tips and see how it goes, I really hope I can improve how I learn and retain info!

Yesss. Love this. I read a lot of scientific papers for my MSc and quite often make ‘summaries’ of individual paragraphs and try to keep it to one line of paper. I find it also helps to read things aloud to yourself. If something is really tricky, I’ll go sentence by sentence and make sure I understand / or break down each one before moving on. Progress via baby steps is still progress! 💕

This was so helpful, thanks for sharing. I completely agree. I find reading lots of information at know so hard to understand and I’m also a very slow reader.
@elenapresilla95184 жыл бұрын
GURLLLL, YOU DONT KNOW HOW MUCH I NEEDED THIS. I just started my new university a few weeks ago, and already by week 2 I was crying and stressed as hell because of the reading load. It means SO SO much that you also said how you struggle with being a slow reader and don’t immediately understand the information presented in articles- I am the same and always felt like I was alone in this. Although I’ve never tried to follow reading and note taking strategies that others recommend, I think now is the time that I should try, so thank you for all these tips! Do you feel like these tips also make you take longer with the reading and notes though? Granted these tips will help one retain the information and be able to generate arguments better for future assignments, do you feel like they are even more so time consuming as before you knew these tips and would spend lots of time rereading or about the same? Thanks again love☺️ Wishing you the best for your time at Harvard. 💛
