@AlejandroGarcia_elviejo3 жыл бұрын
I went ahead and downloaded speechify right in the middle of this video... I'm also a fan of speed reading and I think having the text highlight sync with the audio really helps. The robotic voices are good, not as good as audible's real vocies, but at 800 WPM the difference almost doesn't matter. And as you said non-fiction books sucha as outliers, freakonomics, etc. have many anecdotes too make the subject approachable and friendly... but at the same time if you go over them quckly it's going to be ok.

I want to read faster and I also see the point that reading faster helps reading more. I guess I’m in the point in life when my mind is asking me to slow down. I've started listening to books around 26 y/o. and I've been doing this very thing since the beginning. But, with a few tricks you can do this on a mac without the app. At the moment I am on 700wpm, I used to leave it at 500wpm and never thought of changing it. I do have the book open on the back (as a txt file - wink wink) so i make highlights whilst listening QUESTION OF CLARIFICATION: are you saying this made you a speed reader, as in you can now read fast without the app or do you mean you consume the audio fast? Because I still read pretty slow (it might be cause I don't follow the text that much) is the moving highlighter thing making you a fast reader?

The problem with speechify is that it's so expensive? $20 a month is just too much for a text-to-speech app. And I have been using the free mechanical voice for a while which is great, but lately they don't let me speed it up pass a certain speed unless I subscribe for premium. The more annoying thing is everywhere I look, the price is difference, there are review saying it's like $7 a month or $76 a year but the plan the offered me is like $20 a month...

@@mikhailtikhonov437 Oh it's not that the others failed necessarily. The reason the audio helps honestly is that it can keep me glued on the page for a lot longer. Because it's a lot of friction to pause the app, I can read endlessly longer than with my own willpower, where things might distract me - if I look away in that case, I'm not reading anymore. But if I have my normal glance-aways with the audio there too, everything is still continuing. So I can go through SO much more in a sitting. I still can read a lot faster with just my eyes, but it's for a shorter amount of time. I do hope that makes sense 😅

Listening to audiobooks is absolutely NOT reading... It never was and never will be. Listening to audiobooks is merely consuming books, like listening to the radio or a podcast it is not the same as having to actively read a book, immersing yourself in it and focusing on the words, this is what makes reading unique. Listening is not reading.
