Just a note on the Creative Commons license: Share Alike just means that if you make modifications to the model, you need to use the same license for your remix if you share it publicly. You're not compelled to share remixes of the file if you're just using it personally (although you probably should).

Funny thing is tht I better get into selling on Etsy because I bought 10 3D Printers that were on eBay marked "as is, for parts only" from people who either didn't know how to put them together, or took them apart for some reason, didn't know how to use design CAD software or slicers, or didn't know how to bed level or adjust Z heights and sold them as broken. Some did need replacement parts and a couple needed rewiring. But now with 10 printers I should sell stuff. So, I did open a shop that I better start using. Plus I do my own designs as well.

been running my 3d printing business since 2015 going on 10 yrs in February. that was back when most still did not know what it 3d printing even was. Unfortunately, I have never came close to making almost 50k a yr. I do better locally then online doing print on demand and prototyping. I make only a few sales on Etsy a month I actually sell more on Ebay.

@@cabotmathiasen2962 I do far better on Ebay than on Etsy. I have 5x more sales on Ebay then on Etsy. Most of my sales come from local business. Either creating a prototypes or recreating thing for people that the manufacture no longer makes. Also still do a lot of on demand printing locally.
@ProjectAnubisUSA

@@cabotmathiasen2962 depends on what you’re selling and how your driving traffic to your site. Etsy seems like it’s more for creative people expecting made items or trinkets. Most people that go to this site are looking for something that’s a “trend” or “artsy”. It will probably receive more traffic for 3D printing with less promotion but it also has more competition if you don’t have unique designs or niche stuff. eBay is good for driving people to buying more functional items and looking for a particular item. Such as solving someone’s “problem”. Example for Etsy would be something like a Stanley cup topper for a holiday vs an eBay example would be a CNC vacuum attachment for a wood shop dust collector. Both require promotion (KZbin, word of mouth, paid promotion) of some sort to maximize sells but each generate a different expectation. Hope this helps from my observations.

The only issue I see with this is that if you find something that becomes popular, the barrier for someone else to copy you is basically non-existent. I just started selling 3D Prints too but I'm a 3D artist so I make all my own models. The only way someone could copy me is to buy it and literally model a copy by eye or use scanning equipment. The scanning equipment is going to give you terrible typology though and it's expensive.

So you sell something for 5.99 that costs about a dollar for materials and electricity, wear and tear on your printers, the box to ship in, shipping (if you include shipping as some do.) and still make a profit? Not to mention the value of your time... I'd love to hear how you ship cheaply and cover loss( Shipping loss or customer lies and says the didn't get it...)

I try to remain at a 90% profit margin, anything under $10 usually isn't worth it but it all depends on who you are and how much you need to make, it's about making the processes efficient as possible, so that you're making a few hundred dollars in just an hour's worth of work

I’m not who you are asking but I’ll throw my 2 cents in from the customers eye it’s always much more trust worthy to see a shopping page that’s filled out then mostly white space with a single item it makes you look a lot more established like you’ve been doing it for awhile other then just a beginner

Like with marijuana becoming more of thing here and in Canada I've noticed a lot of things can be made with 3d printing that people will buy. Just the other day I saw that people like the idea of having a base stand for their bongs so it's harder for them to fall over and with how expensive some bongs can get I see why. Something I sell a lot to dispensaries is cases to carry joints in that are fully 3d printed, it can hold 7 joints and sell them for $2 each to the shops and they sell them for w/e they want (or sell them joints inside). But only costs me around 50 cents to print and I only sell in big bulk to make it worth my time.

I tried Etsy, and in Canada, we get hosed on shipping; Etsy defaults to Canada Post, and they rip you off for shipping. A few guys use envelopes and ship them as letter mail. I would not use anything offline; I have consulted with a Lawyer about this and could be sued for downloading designs. The intellectual Property Lawyer said, " Regardless if an item is listed as public domain, it still is subject to ownership and could be challenged." I actually was challenged on a design I printed out which was listed as public domain and free to sell, and the designer demanded removal. So, I only build my structures or custom for sale.

I've even been challenged on Etsy on things that I've designed myself, The thing is someone's going to be really stupid to sue you over $200 or even $2,000 since it cost way more than that, but I'm no lawyer, just some dude on KZbin 😜

@@MichaelR1975 lol had to put the store on vacation mode a while to move and figure some things out. But I have 5 sales and 5 stars. So it’s a start. Not trying to make excuses but I have been limited on my time as far as new prints/products/advertising. I do ok though, selling prints in smoke shops.

How would you do this for many small items? Sell them as a lot? I can see people asking me constantly "Can I get a deal on shipping, im buying this and that and...". Also, Im curious about how you handle special requests in general (e.g. can I get this print but 1.5x the size).

Hey Adam, if you're going to sell small things like $4 items you need to sell a lot of them, making only one or two color options available will help with this when things get hectic, if someone has a special request you need to come up with what your time is worth, so say if you're charging $50 an hour to design it would only take you about 3 minutes to 1.5 times the size so I would just charge him extra $5 or so for your time and then whatever your need to charge for the cost I'm going to make a video specifically on what to charge for your 3D prints soon

i dont know much about resin printing but some (i dont know how many, or for how much they cost) resin printers can print the entire layer at once, so it takes the exact same amount of time to print 1 really small, or a dozen really small prints. perfect for small prints because resin printers are just, smaller

My personal opinion of all these business videos, making any real PROFIT from these ventures, is like hitting the lotto. There's no promise. As time goes on, it's less and less likely you will make money. Printers are so good and so cheap, this will also be a business venture that will limit your customer base to really old folks who are clueless about tech! Ignorance would be the only reason to buy something another person printed! Wood working, is a skill. Download a file, loading material into a printer, and hitting the start button is not a talent. Not saying it's super easy, but yes, it's pretty close to super easy! Hey, god bless! You got in just in time. I suspect in two years, there will be almost Zero who will tolerate paying 20x the price for something they can print at home.
