I've been using EMG pickups since 1987. You got a killer tone brother.

Cool! A bit longer than me then ’cos I’ve only been playing since ’89 😊. Thanks Patrick!

I love those EMGs! Great information about setting them up, too. Such gorgeous guitars-- ESP is great stuff.

Have you noticed a difference in different era EMGs? Phillip McKnight told how they had a customer who only liked old ones (same model ofc) and was able to tell them apart in a blind test. That story stuck to me and would be interesting to explore further.

I haven't noticed a difference except that on one of my Tokai Les Pauls (2002) the pickups (EMG 81 & 85) seems to be a bit hotter than on my other guitars but that's the only exception I've noticed ever.

Having used EMGs for so long I was wondering if you've tried the S. Duncan Blackouts, they also have that clip-connection, as well as the 18v mod for EMG. There's noticeable differences, not so much with that 18v mod though. I have both and like them for the differences but I'm not playing shows etc where consistency would be necessary.

I haven't tried Blackouts 'cos haven't had the need to; I've been using EMG 81 & 85 for almost 25 years and they're kinda in my DNA ;-). With a regular 9v battery so no mods but just stock.

I'd forgotten about this... i was probably wondering what your opinion was as you prefer the emgs. in that context you might hear differences/subtleties compared to using both, or from reviewers etc. although i've played for nearly 25yrs i have minimal experience with gear/amps/pick-ups etc.

I actually have quite little experience with pickups since, like I said, I've been using EMG's pretty much always and why fix it if it...;-)

Yes that did answer a lot great video. I have always wanted to try 12 - 60 strings but the guitar told me normally you need to modify the nut on les Paul style guitars for the low strings. Did you have to do any mods

Nope. When I’ve used 0.70 on some occasions I honed / carved the nut a bit with a small vile but not that much. It depends what kind of nut the guitar has and the simplest thing is to put a string on the guitar and see if it needs any tweaking 😎👌.

I saw you have a benjo as well. Can you play us something? Or have you done a video aleady? Intereating this country devotion. Rob Barett, David Vincent, the Carcass basser also plays. Can me tell why? 😀 What is common is Death metal and Country? 😀

I have but it's actually a banjo with a guitar neck. I haven't done a video and the banjo is in a different country than I nowadays live so I can't do a video any time soon ;-) No idea :-D

What i like about those emg's is that that when i do the blackmetal chord letting the higher strings ring out everything sounds in perfect balance but i also like the dirty rock and roll feelling that my invader seymour duncans achieve,,,,i will do my ep.and will hace that combination ....hace you ever tried that or what are your thoughts about that? Emg's and seymour duncan invaders togheter?????? Cheers!!!!

I had Invaders for a while on one of my guitars but switched them back to EMG's 'cos for me the 81 / 85 combination is just the best. I've used them almost 25 years so they're kinda in my DNA :-)

Xæsar ad ChaO - You're thinking of having both an active & passive together? I've never tried that, but I think it's possible. One issue you might have is using them together when switch is in middle position. When I tried using EMG with a Blackout pickup I couldn't engage both; emg-707 neck & Blackout 7 in bridge, as well as six string equivalents despite both being 9v active pickups. That might be an issue for you, I did that about 8yrs ago so maybe there's been a solution since then.

J. Fomoiri no,! I ment having one guitar with emgs and the other with invaders in a recording, what i mean is a passive guitar and an active in a recording,,.......
@EugeValovirta230V
@EugeValovirta230V 7 жыл бұрын
No I wasn't thinking about that but that's possible but if understood correct then the active pickup would be "active" all the time even if the cable isn't plugged in and that would of course wear out the battery pretty quickly ;-) And yeah what you wrote is the issue too. So I guess that's not possible then :-)

EV would you suggest good hum-bucker pickups for a semi-hollow? Thanks
@EugeValovirta230V
@EugeValovirta230V 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t have a semi-hollow body guitar so can’t really recommend any but if I’d have I’d probably go for something quite low output ’cos semi-hollows tend to feedback quite easily if played with much gain so low output pickups should work to keep that better in control.
Q&A: Strings, picks, signal chain, adjusting pickups, neck etc.
