Good video, mate. Clear and easy to follow without any bullshit which many other KZbinrs seem to throw into their vlogs.

It is just turtle wax chrome polish. Stainless steel polish will work too. Hold the blade of your knife over a flame for a few seconds to heat the blade up and it will wipe right off with a towel. Careful not to melt or burn the handle or yourself 😁

Are you sharpening that entire scandi grind or do you lift it up?. Hard to tell in the video. I find sharpening scandis more difficult than regular V edges. A lot of metal has to be removed on a scandi. Not a problem sharpening it at home but in the field, not so.
@BURNWOODBUSHCRAFT
@BURNWOODBUSHCRAFT 4 жыл бұрын
I should have clarified that I'm just making a smaller bevel on the edge. It works just fine for me without having to remove metal from the whole grind. I feel that it helps strengthen the blade for wood processing and other tasks.

Great video mate. I am so bad at sharpening my knives and axes. I nearly always make them worse then give up and have someone do it for me. What polish is it that you use on the blades? Gonna try again haha
@BURNWOODBUSHCRAFT
@BURNWOODBUSHCRAFT 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I'm not that great at it myself especially with a big stone. The polish I use is turtle wax chrome polish. I'm sure there's something else better that is specifically for the type of steel but it works pretty well.

@@BURNWOODBUSHCRAFT thanks for the reply mate. Will keep trying and see if I can improve. I have tried pull through sharpeners, electric sharpening, small handheld stones, ceramic rods, whetstone, even bought a Lansky sharpening system with guides but never a great result. It’s so frustrating.

On the video it looks like you're sliding the knife on the stone quite lightly, so I must ask, are you putting any particular amount of pressure onto the knife while you're sharpening it? Like, lightly at first and then applying more pressure as you go on? I just want to make sure I do it correctly! Thanks :D
@BURNWOODBUSHCRAFT
@BURNWOODBUSHCRAFT 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Start out light and gradually add pressure as you go. You'll get the feel for it.

The sharpener comes with instructions not to use oil or water with it, so I wouldn't use anything. I'm a complete beginner when it comes to knife sharpening though so maybe someone else has better information. My knife was a bit beat up after my army times but I did get it reasonably sharp when I first sharpened it(I guess with bit of practice I could get it sharper).
