What you just said about it possibly taking years to grow certain things bc you have to have the right seed. That is so exactly correct! The climate I live in makes it difficult to just grow any variety of plants/herbs. So many things die here in our little mini "micro climate". It was very depressing until I figured that part of it. Hearing you say that is so important and it confirms this truth. Thank you, I've been encouraged 🙏🙂

Thank you Heidi for sharing this 🙏 I started Borage, Yarrow, Catnip,Mullein, Camomile, Cikorie and Calendula from seeds and all germinated fine. Marshmallow and Echinacea didn't and neither did Plantain which is common her. The company who sold me the seeds said that Marshmallow shouldn't have a mineral rich soil, so I'll try again😊 Thank you Heidi for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. I for sure have and is learning a lot from you, and from people sharing their experiences here. Love, light and blessings to you and yours, and all🙏💖

Echinacea here self seeds and comes back every year, and mint goes crazy. Some others like plantain also come back every year. Marshmallow did really well one year, so-so the next, nothing like 3rd year. These are great tips. I started all my seeds this year in pots, some did well, some started and then died. I just had a skin cancer removed from my face last Wednesday and now have stitches from my nose down to about 2 inches above my mouth, but the stitching is in my smile line, so hopefully it won’t show so much when it heals. I’ve been using plantain salve on it, they said to keep it moist. I did ask the dermatologist about using it and he thought it was a great idea using natural medicine. On the way home, I saw 2 rainbows and at home was a big beautiful double rainbow 🌈 out in the back. Yahweh is so good and I feel like it was His way of letting me know everything was going to be fine, He is in control. Shalom, enjoy your Shabbat. ❤

Thank you @RainCountry For my journey with growing herbs and such I was lead to go where certain herbs grow naturally. To learn from the environment they thrive in. Growing Mullein meant traveling an hour away,. Thankfully my State agricultural site listed where to find certain plants. It sounds a bit complicated, , yet what I learned has made a thriving environment for my mullein.. I chose mullein for not only medicinal value, also other properties such as toilet paper. The 2020 toilet paper shortage(lol) was the motivation I needed for this God created plant. Anyway ya asked and I shared, hoping this helps somebody in your growing community, God Bless and keep you.

I've planted Moringa for the first time this year. They were slow to sprout. Three of six seeds stared to grow. The smallest was destroyed by insects. I now have two with one double the size of the other. I'm in 7b east coast of Maryland. I'm hoping they'll survive in my small green house this winter. All of my plants were behind this year due to bad weather.

I bought some seeds and threw them in the ground. I was going for an edible landscape. Well, the marshmallow came up and the borage came up one year. I didn't have any success with the toothache plant. But, it has been at least 4 yrs now, and the marshmallow plant comes back every year. I think your idea is a good idea. 😁 God's blessings to you Heidi

In my area; Western Kentucky; it took me a while to realize the spilanthes/toothache plant; originally from a hot, wet climate needed that replicated. I keep the dirt damp and my big pot covered loosely with plastic and still I spritzed the dirt with water every day, until the seeds sprouted. Never let the dirt get even close to dry. In our hot, dry, mid summer months, I sometimes water it 3 times a day. It has never reseeded on its own. It's well worth the trouble to me for the many uses of the plant.

Great advice Heidi. Getting seeds that are going to acclimate to one’s climate can save lots of frustration with getting seeds to grow. I have loads of Fever Few that grows as a weed here and I discovered that the name of my street is the scientific name of the herb. It’s Tanacetum Parthenium and my property is on Tanacetum Court.

Stratification of some seeds have been how I got seeds to sprout. Lavender is one of them, I struggled for a few years with them. Finally one winter I set seeds on a moist coffee filter, folded it in half and sprayed it with w tiny bit of water. Set the filter in small ziplock bag and set it in my fridge for 3 months. Come spring I set the seeds in soil almost no soil over the seeds and I got 6 plants to grow. Now they live outside 2nd yr and came back this past spring. I've done that with several other seeds, trick them into thinking winter came and went was the trick.

Moringa IS a pain for me as well😂 echinacea was a slow starter, now it grows where I don't even want it, but that's OK, they are pretty. I use my own compost and old potting soil for my pots, thus I have tomatoes in every pot coming up😂😂😂 I got local starts of rose of Sharon, where I wanted it to grow it died, where I planted the extra, oh nice surprise it is doing well. I think I might put my started mallow close there and hope for the best.

Hi Heidi, I love your upbeat, can do attitude. Over the years I’ve learned that becoming self sufficient is quite rewarding and spills over from helping one’s self to helping others. In follow up to this show, I have been starting plant varieties that are difficult to germinate by an old process called “stratification”. The definition has evolved over the years but for me now refers to tricking the seeds into responding from the sensation of having gone through a winter. I do this by planting the seeds into a wet starting medium in trays with cells, sealing them in clear plastic bags then putting them outside in my areaway for a few weeks. This exposes them to cold winter nights without a hard freeze.(the areaway shelters them below the surrounding frost line). In an alternative method I put them in my wine refrigerator which is cool my not too cold. After a few weeks I relocate them under grow lights. This method has worked for many hard to start varieties such as echinacea. All the Best!

Ha! Heidi! You would love growing Gotu Kola! It is a cousin over in Tropics the other side of Earth to our Creeping Charlie. Growers try to get it gowing here, but it doesnt take off. Most give up, according to what i read. The one Grower found it grew and did very well, wherever the seed fell on the gravel between pots and on the ground.
