One of my most asked question is 'How did you start your business?!', and today I am answering it! Whilst I sew a new style of bag, I go through a brief timeline of how AFRAYED Upcycling came about AND I've added some advice and tips in case you are on a similar journey! 🌸🧵
p.s I am very aware I say 'ermm' quite a lot...I'm trying to stop this 😂
In regards to the online marketing courses I took, I bought a few courses from The Small Business Handbook -www.etsy.com/uk/shop/thesmall...
I also bought a few small business related books too!

This was fascinating. As a long-time maker who once had her own physical shop, I have tried to understand and embrace social media to help create a virtual space to sell. I fail. I fear I'm much too old to incorporate and internalize all that is needed to "do" the social media thing. I adore your ability to present yourself and your information. It would be stellar if you end up with the time to go into a little more depth re: how to maneuver through the social media maze (esp for us older makers). Totally understand if your time never allows for this. You are a most refreshing young lady!!! Congrats on finding your path in life!

Thank you! Social media can be quite daunting at first, but I think it can be easy ti navigate with a bit of confidence! I’d love to go more in depth, I’ll take note for maybe a future video or written thing!☺️✨

My town, 50K population, a suburb of Akron Ohio, has a crafting consignment shop in the Community Center. My granddaughter (33), her daughter (13), and myself place items for sale there. Upcycled clothing, children's clothing, some with matching doll clothes, unique T-shirts, purses, totes quilts, furniture. My granddaughter films short "making it" videos that she can place on Facebook, Instagram, something else. After making multiple pieces, she notes sizes, materials, prices of each type and location and hours of the shop. It is working out rather well. We don't have to deal with collecting payments, shipping, unhappy online customers or people coming to our homes. Customers can see our multiple products, hands on, and shop other sellers booths, pay and take their new treasures home, immediately. Works well for small volume production.

I love your logic, but creative way of thinking and doing. In 1969 all this you shared was exactly what I wanted to do. But nice girls went to uni, waisted my father's money and became a teacher. I could only teach for 18 months because I hated every moment. Then secretary of the nursery and sewing all the rest of the time with two little ones. Image no internet. But every time I wanted to give up, I just thought of teaching. I'm South African and we had home industries where we could sell our goods, fantastic. Saturday and Sunday markets. Everything you shared, take it from this 73 year old, is invaluable for having your own business. I think you should write a book. You talked about marketing, admin etc. The things creative people don't like. And the time it takes, very important. Production isn't really such a problem. I'm living in Cambridge, where in 19 years haven't really found much creativity, so would love to move somewhere north. Keep up the good work and keep sharing it pays off. God bless Anita Your South African granny x

If you're talking about Cambridge, UK, this is where I am too (or rather, I'm on the outskirts in the villages) and there's lots of lovely creative groups! If you knit / crochet / do fibre crafts, there are groups that meet up regularly. I'm most familiar with the evening knit nights as I work in the day, but I believe there are groups that meet in the daytime too :) If you draw, take a look at Urban Sketchers in Cambridge. If you're interested in peeking into other artists' studios, take a look at the Open Studios in July, where dozens of artists invite you in to see what they make, from painting, ceramics, glasswork, metalwork... it's fascinating! :D I hope you can find a community to join and enjoy :)

This video healed me, for real. I have a 9 to 5 job as a pattern drafter, but the work environment, control-freak managers and lack of creativity are so stressful and demotivating, it's starting to make me hate my job. I am seriously thinking of building my own business in upcycling, but I'm so scared. Thank you so much for your tips, I took careful notes of everything you said. 🙏 Wish you the best in your business ❣

Good morning from canada...I too went to college for design and learned how to sew very well...when I went for my interview I was able to watch others as we were in an auditorium..and I was seeing the judges very bored with girls all made up with their professional portfolio and when they asked her where else she has applied she listed off a bunch of other school..and I at first thought I'm never going to get in ..I was wearing my home made dress with a sketch book and a few items..and the one judged asked me where else I had applied..I said no where.she asked if that was wise..I said firmly..no where else..., if I didn't get accepted I will take night school classes to better my skill and I will come back next year...I got in and I didn't see thatgirl...you have wisely done the right things toachieve..you should always listen to advice but bottom line dare to dream a better life..and don't be afraid

This video inspires me so much. My mom was a seamstress, I also did some sewing through the years. But I have always had this desire to use worn clothing, Sheets, etc to make patchwork material and design clothes. At the present my husband is taking a room in our house which by the way is the house my dad built and I grew in, and that room that he is now turning into my sewing room.Who would have every thought that would happen. Now at the age of 61, I am thinking I have found my passion right beside rollerskating. However, my husband would rather me sew. LOL. Please keep making videos. Your voice is very pleasant and I so enjoy the energy and ideas your videos give me. Your fresh air.

Hi Scarlett, I just found this video by accident and actually I am really happy that I did! Such a sympathic, young lady doing the things I love (sewing/upcycling) as a fulltime job - great fit. Will surely enjoy some of your other videos one after the other. Just wanted to say "hi", subscribe and sending the best wishes from Germany 😉 Regarrds Stephanie

Wow. What beautiful tea towels you have. Here in Belgium and the Netherlands you only have a checked pattern or waffle fabric. Sometimes you can find tablecloths in thrift stores with such nice images on them, but that's about it. Unfortunately, they are often full of stains and you really have to see if you can save anything. I work a lot with men's blouses, jeans, tablecloths and old knitted sweaters to upcycle. Good luck with your own business.

I've been sewing, drawing & painting since forever. I also made scrubs & theatre gowns in lockdown. About 200 plus. I make my own patterns for bags. Well- make them up as I go along. Also keep making dresses. I used to make children's dresses with painting & quilting on them. I SHOULD sell but can't be bothered with all the admin/Internet stuff!!!! Love your vid. Keep it up. xxx😊

Thank you for this video and encouragement. I have wanted to start my own small business for almost 10 years now, I even went to school for textiles. I also collect vintage textiles and patterns. I worked as a studio assistant for years for another maker. But I am still too terrified to fully commit to my own business. I have done a handful of craft shows as a vendor over the years but always felt disappointed. A big part of the fear is failure, but even more so social media scares me so much. I know how important it is for success, especially after working for someone else. I am so self-conscious about being seen, being judged for not being attractive, or not cool enough, or people making fun of what I create or having high expectations of what I do or how I act. And I'm so scared of the burnout I will probably get from things like customer service and social media interaction. I have lots of ideas and sewing experience, but the business side of things is overwhelming. I have all of the tools but am still holding myself back. It's so scary! You are so brave, honestly.

Aww noo it broke my heart a little ready this! You absolutely can do all of this, it really is your mind that’s holding you back. It can be daunting at first, and you will make mistakes, but once you get in the flow of it, you will do absolutely fine! I promise!💜

Love, love, love this. Thank you for your time and sharing your journey. I would dearly love to 'get out there' as you and others have noted, and perhaps it IS the fear of the unknown that is keeping me from just jumping into my dream of making quilts for a living. No can do--I live in the UK where quilting isn't as big a 'thing' as in the US and because quilts tend to be larger than your adorable scrappy book bag, folks can't just pack them in their suitcase and go home, and most folks don't want to shell out $500 or more for the end product (queen-sized simple overall meander design). If I sold them for any less, I'd have to cut back on quality of sewing or quality of fabric to get the volume needed for a paycheck. In the end, I've figured that I might barely cover cost of materials (fabric, batting, backing--none of which is cheap) and would practically give away my time to keep the cost of the quilt at what most people want to pay. I guess I need to get some help in figuring out how to get that niche market of folks who recognize well-made items and are willing to pay for them. I also work full-time in healthcare and have a mortgage. I'd be terrified of not making enough to keep the lights on while getting a business going. Can't make and sell quilts if I'm on the streets...Anyhoo, thanks again for this: I'll have to keep on trying!!! Many blessings to you!

My first thought was, is there any quilted, small accessories you could do to start with? Like bags, makeup bags, totes, wall art - things like that! Then once you get noticed as the quilting queen that you are, you can maybe get commissioned for bigger pieces?✨🪡 A lot of people start off my buying a cheaper item like a headband, then they gradually save up for more expensive pieces 🌸🌿

Ha ha. I'm the same as you. I think our background experiences are quite similar. And I am also from Kent! I am also a very impatient sewer. I have been prototyping a new t-shirt dress I'm making and I've been wearing it as I alter it until I am happy with the final result. It's the slowest project I've ever done! As I have got older my love of social media has massively dwindled. I loathe it now. Except for KZbin which I have discovered I love so I've decided that's going to be my selling media of choice. So far so good. PS. I'm so jealous of your sewing space. I need more room and I so miss my pattern cutting table!
