What people don't understand is that video games are supposed to be a break from our world, as people immerse themselves into video games more and more they must learn to take a break and live life. Balance is everything

Same here, can definitely recommend stormlight archive from brandon sanderson. Great series of books if you liked lotr/hobbit. And i agree, reading everyday reduced that constant storm of external stimuli. Though i believe its more to do with sitting and slowing down yourself. Reading a book lets you slow down to your natural tempo, which is very very relaxing

For me it’s all about the buzz. You know the feeling when you turn off your console , pc & are still thinking about the game. For me that’s a sign of a good game , one that you’re still engaging with when you’re not playing it. If I don’t get that feeling then I know I can do without.

How I do it: - I play a game if I think I will enjoy it. You might barely know your own tastes, but e.g. If a game is "overwhelmingly positive" on Steam, it has consistently been a game I enjoy. - If I'm not vibing with a game, I will just stop playing and move on. I don't have to force a completion. - I now and then dip my toe out of my comfort zone and try another genre I rarely play. This also has consistently introduced me to games and experiences I love. Maybe sometimes take the time to actually try out those "filler" games you get on Humble bundle. - Allowing yourself to like what you like. If you enjoy only the first half of a game and want to stop playing midway everytime and start a new game instead, do it. If you have more fun speedhacking through the boring running segments because there's no fast travel, do it. If you want to make a cheese build to destroy every boss, do it. Play how you want.

I feel that the more I ignore Twitter or whatever about games that come out that are deemed “problematic”, the more I can actually enjoy it. Staying away from the toxicity of others that don’t even know what they’re talking about is the best way I can actually breathe while playing. I want to play to have enjoyment, not play only to think about the stupidity being said about it. When I’m not playing games or working, I write. It’s usually something in my head that I want to write out as a story and doing something like that is a good way of taking a break from playing games. It still gives me enjoyment at the end of the day, I feel like I accomplished something when I do, and it helps me get better at writing as a whole.

My experience --> Key Notes 1. Don't watch other playthroughs or anything related. Ex - I planned on beating Metroid prime 2 & 3 but then Metroid 1 remaster coincidentally came out then I ended up watching a whole playthrough and lost interest in my original plan without even starting.. I had everything set up too with an HD mod. -_- (gotta recharge my interest now, give it a year or so) 2. Games vs Other Media (YT, Anime, TV Shows) If you stick around long enough it's eventually gonna soak up your time & "Media Energy" thus you don't feel like playing games or as much as you would that day. --> Play as soon as you wake up or before jumping on the internet. 3. Don't force yourself to play in a certain order, you wanna play dark souls 3 first instead of 1 for the first time? Go ahead, who cares, it doesn't matter, you're gonna have fun either way. If not, you're more likely to end up burning yourself out and playing a game you don't really enjoy as much, thus never really getting to the main game you truly wanted to play, whereas you would have had a better experience if you went with what you truly wanted to play in the first place. 4. Ignore critic videos, watch only early gameplay & core mechanics to truly determine if you would really enjoy playing through it. 5. Play whenever you want & how you want & have fun. Easy mode hard mode no one cares. It's your experience that only really affects you. I'm also an enthusiastic gamer :D My lineup right now is Monster Hunter Rise 130+ Hours in (Didn't even feel like it), Tales of Vesperia, Final Fantasy 7 Ps1, Breath of the Wild, Dark Souls Remaster, Final Fantasy Crisis Core, Mario & Luigi Dream Team, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 1 and whatever indie game or nes, snes, gba etc. classics I feel like beating in between. You only have 1 life after all, manage your time well.

Yea I agree, especially about the doing stuff in the order you want to and playing games how you want to even if it doesn't "make sense" to others. I love messing around in MH:R. The friends who introduced me to the game were total tryhards who only speed ran the game and did "meta" builds. Super serious about the game. While I love them, I think speed running MH and taking it over-seriously is just pointlessly stressful. You gotta enjoy the grind, and sometimes that means being a little silly. Building a full shock elemental glaive build is stupid? Call me the bug zapper. I shouldn't build a greatsword build based only on aesthetics and not whats "meta"? Well, I'd rather feel like a fashion icon while I hunt than one shot the monster. The "real game" doesn't start until master rank? Well i wanna have fun today, so i'm gonna do some easy low level hunts and just hunt monsters i enjoy.

I am a Resident Evil novice, and although I am old enough to have seen RE1 release onto the PS1, my only experience with the franchise was over my brother's shoulder and then later on some no commentary full playthrough videos on KZbin. In a fit of madness I recently bought Resident Evil 5 as it was on sale for super cheap, a game that released in 2009, and decided to say "What the Hell, let's do it". I had so much fun. And the reason for this is because I was so intimidated by the franchise, I started on the easiest difficulty, and played the whole thing through. Really enjoyed it. Then I upped the difficulty, and went through it again, unlocking infinite ammo weapons and familiarizing myself with the game to the extent I felt confident to play veteran difficulty and completed it. I'm stuck on pro difficulty at the moment at the giant boss, but I still boot it up a couple of times a day to have another crack.

Being a long time gamer it also becomes harder to find new and exciting things to play, since you've mostly seen something like them before. Lore in most cases also seem like rehashed stories about gods, kings and evil wizards etc. I also found that I was a bit addicted to those Steam achievement pop ups and the dopamine they gave me, to the point of thinking "why am I playing these achievement-less games???". In the end gameplay is king and that's the main ingredient of fun now.

Yeah, I too went through a phase where I couldn't get into video games the same way I once did but I came to the realization that nostalgia does that to you. You'll never recapture those feelings you had when you were a kid or when you were younger, the fact of the matter is they were a product of their time. As soon as you retrain your brain to let go of those feelings and accept that you're a different person now you can start to enjoy things again. I used to think that I'll never find those feelings of amazement and joy that Chrono Trigger, diablo, starcraft, final fantasy 7,.. boy was I wrong. I'm 40 now and I'd argue that Apex Legends and Armored Core 6 are some of the best games that I've ever played in my life. Recency bias? Maybe! I just know that you just gotta play what you enjoy, know yourself, dont just play things that are popular just because. Play what really interests you. If I get bored of FPS, I like so many other genres likes totalwar warhammer if Im feeling strategic, valheim if I wanna relax, Elden Ring if I want to explore,... end of rant.

I think the main reason why is because most of us are 20+ year old dudes that have been gaming since we were 7 or something. So it's obvious that not every new game will peak our interest because not every NEW game is a FRESH game. God of War 2018 is good but it's nothing I haven't seen before, Starfield is not terrible but it's just Fallout in space with worse characters. A newcomer will LOVE these new games, so they aren't bad, it's just that's harder to surprise a veteran audience. Think of like 30 year old horror movie buffs watching whatever is coming out today. They see the same kind of monsters, the same kind of plot, the same kind of jumpscares, and they will rarely be engaged with the movie as much as a 14 year old kid will. That's just my pov tho
@ivoryowl
@ivoryowl 6 ай бұрын
Absolutely agree with this. It's hard to impress someone who's been playing videogames for years because they've probably seen it all. Many companies nowadays prioritize new audiences because that's where the most money is rather than capitalizing on their OG communities. A one-size-fits-all game is like a big trawling net; even if some fish escape you still get a large haul either way. The problem with a game that tries caters to everyone is that it ends up catering to no one. But they don't care because by the time people realize it, the corpos already got their money's worth.

I agree with this. Every time I sit down to play anything new it doesn't take very long for me to start feeling like I've done this a hundred times before. What's kind of weird is that I do occasionally like to go back and replay games that I've literately played a hundred times before. Not sure what that's all about.

This is why I love single player games and I appreciate them more now that i'm older. I have very little motivation to play something like Apex or Destiny like it feels pointless and mind numbing, but when I play something like RDR2 or even Dragons Dogma 2 it doesn't feel like a waste of time. In those single player games I can immerse myself in their world and escape reality. Now that I take my times more with games instead of rushing through I start to notice more details that I didn't used to notice before and I get invested in a lot of the lore texts around the world. There's always a time to play those multiplayer games with friends, but when that really good single player game comes out it can truly change your enjoyment for games.

My advice for anyone who is struggling with this is: Take a break from all gaming, even more than a month if you have to. Then, when you are ready, try out some older games from the PS2/GameCube/Xbox era. These were some of the greatest games ever made. Or go even further back then that to the SNES/GENESIS era. Some absolute masterpiece games from that time aswell. For me its the N64 though, I STILL enjoy playing Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask.

How I learned to start enjoying games is to stop thinking it as something competitive and immerse myself into the world trying forget the outside/real world or try put real stuff things into games. For example I have mostly stopped playing multiplayer games or barely any at all beside few games that I play with friends only. Because those multiplayer games made competetive and mad whenever I died from a player or some "bullsh*t".

TLDR: quality> quantity Cutting down how many games you buy is step 1. Hype for games makes you feel like you HAVE to buy this new hot game NOW. You really have to decide do I really really want this game? Or is it literally just something I’m buying to cure my current boredom? Because generally when I was buying something to just cure my boredom, it does , VERY temporarily then I was even more bored after AND had less money because I just bought a game I actually didn’t want.

There are highs and lows to video games when it comes to engagement. In the past we didn't have all these short form videos and other technology that we could quickly find more entertainment out of. So we find ourselves switching to the short form as soon as there's a low or slow spot in a game. In the past because we didn't have quick readily available entertainment. That kind of forced us to play through the more boring or slow or difficult parts in a video game and actually complete them.

I think a big one is that most games now have similar mechanics, those that are liked were popular so get replicated. Those that have new, fancy or different mechanics people don't like as much, being either non intuitive, over complicated, too long, or just straight up not fun. So at this point you can pick almost any game and you have basically already played it 50 times because it's essentially the same as any other one you have played, or it feels new but just isn't fun.

Just word of caution. I tried replaying Unreal and realized how little handholding the game has. There is a lot of backtracking. Normally you would have to find a lever somewhere to open a door elsewhere. Now you have to find the door you opened. In one instance I remember that there was one door that had to be destroyed where this was not possible on the other doors of the game. In other games you might think you are stuck, because you can't figure out what you need to do, but it's possible that there is a bug preventing you from progressing. This happened to me playing Clive Barker's Undying. I enjoyed playing those games, but I can't guarantee that everyone will. I also remember enjoying Deus Ex 2 without having played the first installment and only found out afterwards how much people disliked the sequel.

The answer is incredibly simple for me. I revisited old games, ventured outside of the generes I usually play, and started reading more books. I think what would help people the most is exploring new genres though. Almost everytime I hear something about games being boring, the people saying this seem to strictly play the same one or two genre of games. Of course its gonna be, "boring", if you're basically playing the same concept over and over again for years on end. I think the biggest obstacle here is getting over the mindset of, "No way i'd enjoy something like this", but if you can overcome it and at least give it a chance you might have a change of heart.

I have a homie like this and he’s way of playing video games is literally the complete opposite of me . I love to take my time with my video games , I try to go for at least 100 hours on every new game I buy and since I’m an adult now (26 ) I have other priorities so I’m only limited to about 4-6 hours on Saturday and Sunday so about 8/-12 hours weekly , a little more if I find the time & im in the mindset that if I takes me months to beat a single game then soo be it , meanwhile my homie buys multiple games at the same time , rushes the story/ game or just drops whatever game he’s currently playing in favor of a new game coming out and the cycle continues, dude probably has at least 30+ games he never bothered to beat and are still sitting in he’s vault and most likely he’ll never touch them again , it’s honestly quite infuriating. I’m playing 3 games right now , FF 7 Rebirth , Dragons Dogma 2 & Rise of the Ronin , 3 games I’ve been waiting months for and I’m 100% positive it will take me months to beat just these 3 games alone and I’m perfectly ok with that , meanwhile my homie will rush through all 3 in a month ( barley touch any side content and then get bored because he dosent have anything to play , I swear it’s like people feel accomplished when they beat a game before there friends , I could care less , i play video games to immerse myself , not to treat it like a damn checklist 😂😭🤦‍♂️

1:30 is exactly what I tell people when they think that games have gotten worse rather than their mindset has changed around games. Adults want to be good at games so they'll give up on a game quick if the tutorial doesn't make them feel crazy powerful from the first 5 minutes and adults want structure so they inadvertently want these checklists to complete, which creates these problems that "games arent fun anymore". If you want to see it's a state of mind problem not a game problem, play a brand new game with a kid and watch how differently you approach it. I did this playing stranded deep with my niece, we landed on the beginning survival island, my brain...Ok what would I need to prioritise to survive and thrive in the game, her brain...I see island lets take the dingy over there. So what happened? We took a dingy not meant for travelling between islands and got killed by a shark, my response...ok dingy not for travelling lets work out how to play the game, her response...Lol that was fun lets do it again, soo she did it again, 3 more times and was laughing her head off everytime while I was sitting on the island trying to find out how to play the actual game. It's always a mentality issues we just don't want to accept because it's easier saying games now are bad then re-wiring your entire brain to approach games like a kid again.

im happy for you Asmond that you actually still have fun playing games Offline. when i though about starting to be a live streamer i already knew it would probably destroy my passion for gaming since its so much different. but hearing you saying you still like to game alone gives me hope lol.

the video is entirely correct and ive weirdly had to teach myself to enjoy games due to playing MMOs for such a long time. ive been stuck in the mindset of getting to the end and doing the end game content for way too long because its honestly just how games are geared now... asmongolds point at the end is a bit weird tho.. hes rich.. he never has to worry about the price tag of a game.. i garantee you that he does not experience buyers remorse.. personally i will debate about buying a game that i KNOW i want to play for way too long before i do.. i literally wait years for games to go on sale.. not because i just cant afford them.. but because i feel weird spending 80$ on average for a brand new game i may not even enjoy.. legitimately played through the borderlands series and all of the dlcs just this past year (came out in 2019 lol) because the bundle went on sale for like 30$.. absolutely do not regret my purchase. it was one of the best experiences ive had in a very long time.. but it took me years to justify that purchase.. his average gaming experience is not what it is for most people.. just saying. . now i am in no capacity saying most people are like me.. im honestly a bit of an an oxymoron.. i work only to live and after that i dont care about wealth or money whatsoever.. but at the same time, i am extremely careful with what i do have... so an 80$ 60$ tag on literally pixels on a screen makes me question whether ill regret it or enjoy it. a game could be 29.99 and go on sale for 12.99 and ill still be like "yeah but am i actually going to play that?" these are not questions asmongold is ever going to ask himself due to money lol... i understand i probably spent twice that amount on fast food for my wife and myself for one meal.. but its still a thing.. i have never been able to shake buyers remorse even when my wife says "just buy the damn game who cares?" BESIDES ALL THAT.. zack doesnt have the annoying as fuck voice in the back of his head that's constantly saying "if you keep doing this, you'll be homeless and no one will ever love you" as he literally gets paid to do it lol.. THAT is the real issue here.. most of us just have WAY too much stress from responsibilities and legitimately cant enjoy our games.. there are days where i actually think about and plan out what im gong to do in game later when i get off work, but by the time i get home take the dogs out feed them do my routine stuff.. i dont have the mental capacity to achievement farm do raids or antying else that i really wanted to do.. so instead, i doomscroll while netflix is playing something i dont care about in the backround as i eat and then eventually watch an asmongold video or two on youtube before i go to bed. the only time i truly feel like i can enjoy playing video games is late friday or saturday night where i dont have to worry about next day responsibilities or anything other than enjoying the weekend with my wife. not sure why everyone acts like the main issue is microtransactions or pre-ordering.... (but you should also stop fucking paying for that shit too dumbasses)

Stray has been the best game I've played in the past 5 or so years. It NEVER overstayed it's welcome, was straight to the point but let you go off path if you wanted, and it was finished in about 7 hours. A cohesive yet somber story, told in a very unique way, finished too soon. Unfortunately I compare every game to Stray. It's my new standard. Maybe my standards are too high now, I'm not sure. That game and Katamari are my existence. It's not that I'm not enjoying video games, I'm just having a hell of a time waiting for that "grasp".

In the past you’d have to actually go to a shop that sold the games, browse and make a judgment based on the case alone. You couldn’t look anything up on the internet because it didn’t exist. If you purchased something terrible you’d play it until you liked it, because it cost you all your pocket money. So some of them games that were terrible became favorites. Now you just go on the internet and download it in 5 minutes if it sucks you download another one. That and back then they couldn’t sell to you after you purchased the product.
