I've struggled with this my entire life. I'm 56 years old! Like you, when I was younger, whenever I came home from school, the house was already clean...including my room. I was always told to go "outside...get out of the way!" Same in the kitchen..."get out of my way!" When I got married, my husband taught me how to cook the simplest of meals, do laundry, clean...I know what you mean about not seeing the "results" of my cleaning. It's so frustrating! My husband was laid off, so he's been helping me tremendously to "make it a habit" and not procrastinating. I'm struggling, though. Thanks for sharing! It's good to know that I'm not alone in my struggles! Watching your videos always makes me want to get up and get to work. You've helped me so much!

US Home Economics didn’t teach about how to organize, cleaning and manage a house. It was introduction to cooking & a sewing machine that’s it. Every thing I learned was from the chores I had starting at 4 years old. By the time I was 8.5 years my mom had a heat attack & I had 3 young brothers the youngest special needs. Dad worked 2 or 3 shift as a Deputy Sheriff & unreachable when at work. Mom survived but the next 9 years were touch & go. I was in charge of when mom had a heart scare in between school & my nanny company & managing 1/2+ housework. I worked so hard helping with cleaning & laundry & cooking & canning & minding children. Once I had the dinner dishes done & floors swept them I could start on my homework. This is how most of us learned house keeping is at our mothers side with grandma & aunts adding/ sharing how they do things. 💜

It’s hard when your spouse has major adhd. Takes him literally hours to do the dishes and there’s always dishes he seems to not even see. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still his task but when I actually want the entire kitchen truly cleaned I have to do it myself. 🤦‍♀️

Perhaps do the pre wash work for him. Gather all the dishes up, wipe the countertops. Then it doesn’t matter if it takes him hours to do the dishes…..at least he won’t miss any. I have a sister that will take hours in a room and it’s still not clean…..all bc she’s not ever chosen to learn the pick up, dust and floors routine.

You have honestly changed my life. I'm not being over dramatic it's the truth. I've tried different cleaning routines since watching your videos and got something from each one. The biggest thing that has helped has been your decluttering series. It helps so much to have less stuff to keep things clean. I think I've used a little of different routines to help me figure out what works for me. I work Mon..Tues..and Wed. On Thursday I clean the mudroom, dining room, kitchen and bathroom top to bottom. On Friday I do the living room, den and bedrooms. Friday is an easy day. This leaves me with the weekend to do things I want and go out and come home to a clean house. I do laundry when I get home from work and catch up on Thursday and Fridays. I use to spend all my days off doing something and never feeling like everything was really clean. My son just bought a house and my husband is planning on retiring next year. I'm sure that will result in some changes. I'll have a LOT less laundry and less around the house when my son moves so more free time. Thank you for all you do to help us. Can't wait for gardening videos. Hoping this is a much better year than last.

I think the big lesson here is each of us need to tailor our routines based on our lifestyle and responsibilities. I noticed many of the commentators here noted different methods that work for them. Experimentation and defining priorities will help create the routine that works for each of us. Thanks, Sophia, for sharing yours. I've watched your for several years and i know how you have struggled. I'm so glad you developed a routine that works for you! That has been your great challenge. XO ❤️

There would be mountains of laundry. I tried every cleaning program and finally did what worked for me. Decluttering the house was biggest impact. Now I am in the process of maintaining it. Many resets during the years. Have always loved your openness and honesty that has helped me in the process.

I love how honest and vulnerable you are, and each of us struggle trying to meet expectations that are unrealistic. I'm in my 70s and recently retired. My whole life I struggled with clutter and shuddered if someone came to visit. My bucket list includes having a clean decluttered house that would allow me to enjoy my home and not feel guilty. I am so proud of all the steps you have taken to achieve the life you want. I too found fly lady and all the other channels giving us advice. I quickly learned they are just suggestions and for some they work and for others they don't. We have to do exactly as you did, take the knowledge and create a routine that works for us. As the minimal mom channel says, how much inventory do we want to manage. Some people can handle a lot of stuff, most cannot. Eliminating what we don't want to clean or manage gives us more time to manage what we care for. So, I will continue to declutter so I don't have to manage a lot and then I can develope my own cleaning routine also. You are quite amazing with all you do and as they say, you have come a long way, baby! 15:47

To listen to an hour of your testimony of how you went from point A to point B was amazing! You have inspired so many people. You have a sparkle in your eye this year that is so refreshing. I am an organized person, and I hate clutter. My life was living in a very large house, married, three active children, working full time, served on the City Council and volunteered in many organizations. My life was hectic, but I loved it. It is one thing to get organized, but the secret is to stay organized. Enjoy your channel! ❤

You were the first youtube channel I started watching while I was in college years ago. I am proud of you. I think many women who work outside the home have to focus the majority of their energy on that. I dont have an average type of job either. The type of cleaning routines on the market just dont fit. I am even thinking about bi weekly help, so I can just maintain and still have time to live. Dont let what others say get you. Probably if they were doing those things they are calling you out on, they are not doing in their own homes. Live is funny these days. People feel entitled and lack healthy boundaries with many things these days. Cheers to you.

The people who criticize the way you do or don't do things would be critical no matter what you did or didn't do. They like to judge and criticize. I wonder how much they do or don't do. Sometimes the people with the dirtiest houses are the loudest with criticism. Don't explain to them. You'll never quiet them. They are unhappy people who like being critical. For some reason it makes them feel like authorities. Ugh. They are really annoying.

OMG Sophia what an amazing indepth video, having watched your video for a number of years, I've seen the changes in you from 2 years ago, back then I noticed your heart wasn't in it. I dreaded the thought of you giving up U tube, BUT l would of understood if you did, the amount of work you do, is astronomical. I'm a 62 year old woman, I work full time as a picker and packer for a major postal firm, regularly handle 8kg plus parcels, Monday to Friday, my house is tiny compared to yours, and I struggle to maintain my home, like you I've followed the Fly lady routine, which didn't work for me, I've found a manageable routine that makes my life better, and as for the nasty comments from people saying you haven't done this or what about that, need to get a life and live in the real world. You do an amazing, awesome job, 👍👍👍👍👍🌼🌼🌼

It Bothers me when people upset you and people still need to learn influencers aren’t asking for anyones advice, negative opinions, nosey questions, to be judged/criticized or inputs on how to raise her children! You may think your helping but you are not! Words hurt! Sophia is the hardest working person and so inspirational and I thank you Sophia for sharing your greatest challenges with me. For the ones who hasn’t learned if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all, look within..to be kind is free but gives back so much especially in todays world. I am in my early seventies and grew up several places in the USA but mostly in rural Illinois; Home Ec was offered in our local h.s. but I thought it was absurd because I learned at home, from the best, my mom. I am still appalled at what is not taught at home before launching young adults out to the wotld to supposedly be able to function on their own, and likely why there are so many adults still living in their childhood homes for many reasons. I was also taught some basic maintenance and repairs as a child, from my father and mother as well even though we lived more years in small apartments until we could afford to buy a house. I have never regretted self-sufficiency since leaving home at 17, as we never had money to hire everything done by someone else.

I had a stay-at-home mom who did all the cooking and cleaning for our family so I didn't learn those skills, plus I lack some Executive Functioning skills. I didn't learn about EF until I was in my mid-40s and it really opened my eyes that I wasn't lazy; I just had to learn strategies to work on the areas that I struggled with, mainly Task Initiation and Time Management. I'm 48 now and recently created a whole cleaning schedule document but I'm a perfectionist with a fear of failure so I never even gave it a try. The only thing that is currently working for me is habit stacking, meaning I do a cleaning task after I do something that I already do as part of my daily routine. I get all my daily basics done that way. Here are some examples: After I wake up and use the washroom, I go back and make the bed. After eating breakfast, I catch up on the dishes. While my tea is steeping, I wipe down the counters and stovetop. When I use the washroom again, I do my bathroom chore for that weekday, taking weekends off. Apart from that, I freestyle it and just clean in tiny spurts where needed. I'm really looking forward to this series to see if it's something that could work for me!

What you’re doing now seems to be working for you. Your house is looking lovely. I do think you need to rope in Scott and the boys more though. It really shouldn’t be all down to you. For anyone out there who wants a simplified version of the Fly Lady system I recommend Diane in Denmark and also The Secret Slob who started with Diane’s videos and altered the system to suit herself. Everyone’s situation is different so you always have to adapt other people’s suggestions.

Sophia....you keep hitting that nail right on the head.... You are so right!! No ones life style is the same and yes everyones routine will be different. Several years ago I was into Martial Arts, Softball, Volleyball, Bowling and Golfing, so I spent a lot of time doing the things I loved as oppose to shining up my house, don't get me wrong I still cleaned my home but not to deep. Now life is a little slower for me because I am trying to make sure I can still walk when I'm older, so I don't do Martial Arts anymore although I still do some of the exercises once in awhile, I do not play softball anymore although I get tempted to play because I love it. I stopped bowling because I lost interest but still bowl for fun with family or friends. I stopped Volleyball but I am still Golfing and I enjoy it. Life is to short to spend it on worrying about cleaning the top of the door frame 🤨, it's about being happy and enjoying time with family and special friends or watching you Sophia!!! Can't wait to see the upcoming videos. Thank you for sharing all you do. Gracias...

Six years ago I bought a new to me house. The former one had 15 fixtures, 4 bedrooms, 3000 plus sq feet. And it was just me. 3/4 of the house I never used. New house is under 980 sq ft with two bedrooms and 1 bath. It takes me 45 minutes to clean entire bath, dust, vac, and mop… and sweep the front porch. Smaller has worked for me. I have more time for hobbies, travel, and entertaining.

I have come to the same conclusions you have. I have since retired partly due to health reasons and all my children have moved into their own homes and can’t believe how much time I have now! Time was nearly all my issues. I find that I am still keeping the routine that fits me and designed by me. I spend my “extra time” now on things I never could do before (Quilting, reading, gardening). Life is too short to spend all my time cleaning! That’s great that you found what the system that works for you. Back when you was doing fly-lady, I joined in and I loved it! It worked for me with our 2,600 square feet of house. But then I became disabled, we sold our house and downsized to 1200 square feet to keep clean. I found that my routine didn’t work anymore. As a matter of fact, I decluttered my fly-lady journal last week. You have given me a wonderful idea that I need to come up with my own plan. Thank you so much! When it gets bad and I clean, it's like a project rather than drudgery. Cleaning something that looks clean doesn't give that same hit as going from sloppy to tidy! I've been where you are, never learning to clean or follow routines, and I've struggled my entire life to figure out what works for me. I finally realized I needed to focus on improvement and doing the best I can, but I do have a schedule, and I use timers. It's still more satisfying to clean a big mess than maintain, so I'll always struggle with that. Nothing gets so messed up now that I can't fix it in ten or fifteen minutes, a half an hour at most, which is a great feeling too. I really enjoyed this video, Sophia. I'm looking forward to seeing your upcoming videos.

Thanks for always sharing openly and honestly I think you inspire more people than you know.

Sophia, thank you for proving to myself that I'm not all that crazy or lazy! lol I tried so many cleaning systems and they really didn't take. I started with Konmari after my husband of 30+ years died. He was almost a hoarder and I had too many things to go through. It took me nearly 2 years but I did my best and then I realized I was almost a hoarder as well because I only cleaned out like 50% of the things in my house. So I had to sit down and realize that half of these things were my junk or things I didn't need. Again, this was the time I went over the many cleaning routine systems I found on YT. I tried and after a week or two, I failed. I felt like a failure but then I realized if I pulled one or two things from these systems and made them my own, then it was so much better and made the system my own. Bless you Sophia and your family.

I am totally with you on the fly lady system. I felt like I was cleaning something that no one even saw, like a door frame. But when I would look at the dirty wall that my dog likes to lay against, I felt torn about cleaning it. Because after all fly lady doesn't mention this type of cleaning! I have struggled the most since I have started working from home. I really need to just make a routine and just stick to it. When I worked outside of the home. I had one day to my housework and I just did it. It may have taken me all day, but I knew I had to do it. Now though I feel so guilty because I am home seeing all this stuff that needs done. My work is only about 4 hours a day, so I could have lots of time to do a routine, its just finding one that I WILL STICK TO is the problem.

I enjoy watching you just be you. When I saw you clean your kitchen, some years back, I thought, you just have too much, but hey, it is your's. Everyone has a different family, home, routine, etc so one size does not fit in cleaning, etc. My stuff would push a minimalist over the edge! When I worked 12hr shifts plus an hour each way, homeschooling etc my routine was very different. Life thankfully moves on and I am retired. Just keep showing up to whatever task.❤

When I first discovered social media/KZbin and saw the fly lady I thought I had found a better way to clean- my house has always been very neat and tidy but I thought - someone came up with a better method. Well it only took about 30 minutes of reading the schedule and I knew this was not for me. Like you said it has to fit our life style. My routine fit my life style. What I found interesting was the number of young women who didn't know how to clean and thank goodness they found the fly lady to give them guidance. I feel this series your doing is an excellent guide for those who struggle, your telling them " fit your life style". I was lucky my mom worked and taught me how to be a homemaker so when she got home from work it was easier on her busy week, because we had a farm and there was lots that needed to be done when my parents got home in the evening.

I never followed a specific routine. mom and dad worked and I was expected to help. I had 3 kids 4 and under and 3:nursing jobs. I just cleaned everyday. I worked nights and cleaned when I got home every night till about 2 am. I had a partner who did not help. . I had no hobbies etc but I leaned to keep it all clean as the eldest daughter with 4 brothers. I loved things clean but hate clutter but I have clutter now as a depressed retiree however and need to declutter. It was an emotional coping mechanism after my Dad passed. I went on a shopping therapy journey. My house is clean but I have collections. It’s cluttered now. I feel like I burnt myself out whenI was younger. Wish I was more relaxed back in the day. You inspire me Sophia. ❤️

Are you teaching your sons because they need to know how also. I didn’t with my son and his wife didn’t appreciate it. He could do his laundry but often didn’t.

You are doing a wonderful job. I am glad you have found a routine that works for you. It is hard as a working mom, to do everything that needs done around the house on top of the shopping and running around. You barely have a moment to chill at the end of the day. Not everyone can understand that. Both of my kids are now adults, but before that I literally started doing some housework in the mornings before I dropped them at school and went to work. We had so many nights of activities that it was not feasible and then the weekends were always booked up. My goal was to at least get dishes put in the dishwasher or hand wash. Then wipe my counters down. If I had any other time, then I would try to declutter the "hotspots" or vacuum. Anything was better than nothing. It is also surprising how much you can actually do in 10-15 minutes. It made me feel good to have 1 or 2 items off of my list for the evenings. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I think I understand your struggle. It's quite easy to have successful and satisfying routines if your day is focused on household maintenance. But if you have a full time job you literally are short of time. When you come back home you' re knackered . .. I 'm saying this because me too I struggled coping with household chores as a working girl and a real slob. 😂😂 I was a slob who liked cleaning and upkeeping a clean home. I think I have come up with a less stressful customized system that works for me at last!😂😂

Great video Sophia! We are alot alike in our cleaning (or non cleaning lol) history. I wasn't taught to clean or cook or do household finances. I had been checking out the Flylady (again) and get so overwhelmed that I don't do more than shine my sink!🤪 I am so happy you have been able to come up with your own system that feels natural for you and works with your busy schedule. You have done such amazing decluttering, so it makes sense that all the dots are connecting for you.

I am saying this in all love and sincerity. You are giving yourself too much work. Do you HAVE to do 3 KZbin and 2 Patreon videos every week? NO! You gave yourself that on top of working full time. Most youtibers doing what you do have quit their full time jobs to do youtube as their full time business. Im scared for you. Too much work, not enough sleep or rest. Please simplify. Sounds like you dont even have 8 hrs to sleep. You look wonderful lately though - hair, clothing, weight. You look beautiful.

I relate so much to this! I was never taught how to clean either. As a child shoving everything under my bed was acceptable. I remember when you were using fly lady, that's when I discovered your channel, fly lady didn't work for me either. It's been a long process for me too and I can just barely keep my house maintained. The rooms that are the easiest have been partially decluttered, there is a lot more work I have to do but I am getting there! Thank you for this chat it's nice to know I'm not the only one where someone else's way/routine didn't work for them.

In the past I solved this problem by having a cleaning lady. I’m a perfectionist and could never get the house done “right”. No more! I’m trying to do it and not worry about it being perfect.
