2 important updates! First, some tips I forgot for the video: * take breaks throughout the day. Not on your phone - you need to look away from a screen for at least 5 minutes. If you're working from home, this is a great time to play with your children or do small chores! * take 1 day off per week. Take care of things around the house, be with your family, maybe go see friends and extended family with them as well * accept changes as they come. Just today I stayed up late editing the video, slept in for 3 hours, then took care of the baby for an hour and a half because a sitter didn't show up. But I'll be back to normal tomorrow. And another update: I changed title from "study" to "studied" for a couple reasons: * My non-day-job work is now a mix of studying, projects, and KZbin * I'm switching schedules to one where the big "study" block is closer to 3 hours, so that family dinner time is easier. I'll probably switch again at some point as circumstances change!

In my country, if you have a full-time on-site job, you need to spend 1 unpaid hour commuting to work, 1 unpaid hour for lunch, and another unpaid hour commuting back home. That adds up to 11 hours dedicated to work, but 3 of those hours are unpaid.

I agree so much with this. I was unhappy with my then current job. My wife told me to quit and study to follow my dream. First year was hard economically, but from second year i studied 100% and worked 50-75%. A lot of time missed with family, it was all worth it as I now work on/with something I love (and have time for family). But our mindset has also changed for both me and my wife, now instead of Netflix, we often sit next to each other with a book or laptop studying/learning (also note that reading fiction also keeps your brain going, so switch it up). You are never to old to learn, I am over 40 and have done my career change, it was hard but just focus on the future.
@jeffrey_codes3 күн бұрын
Congrats on the successful career change! It's wonderful to have a family that supports you I really like your idea of reading together at night. That is a great idea! If I don't know WHY I'm doing something, then I need to revamp my plan (for personal work) or have a discussion with management * Steady amount of caffeine - it can be high, low, or none, but if you have two cups to start your day and nothing after that, you're not going to last 12 hours * If your brain just stops working, then don't force it. Try again in a day or two. Maybe even take a week off of non-day-job work.

I agree with pretty much all the points in the video; however, what I would say is, you don’t need to make major progress everyday. If you can only afford 30 minutes to watch a lecture, do math problems, work on your project that is OKAY. I also love the point of: take on day off a week! Far too often people see the opportunity cost only for the cost (“what am I not doing?” Or “what am I missing out on”) instead of focusing on the opportunity they got (“I got to spend time with my family instead of doing and extra hour of work”). The truth is, this video outlines some of the things you can do but it’s not a copy and paste for your life - Jeffery would likely agree. What he is sharing is things you can do to increase how much and how fast you learn IF it works for you (and it can “work” in varying degrees).
@jeffrey_codes3 күн бұрын
💯agreed with everything you said I especially want to emphasize what you said about copying and pasting - taking on someone else's schedule is a way to disaster. Everyone has different goals, different work and family commitments, different levels of motivation. Even I vary, and do different schedules as the need arises - I won't study 4 hours/day for life!

Great video! One point that I think could be expanded upon (because it’s interesting and not something I think many people consider) is the idea of making studying fun. When I talk to people about how I make studying fun for myself, they often give me a confused look because they’ve never really considered that to be an option
@jeffrey_codes3 күн бұрын
Thanks! I consider study motivation to come from 3 different factors: * How naturally interested you are in a subject * How useful the subject is in improving your life * How good your resources and study plan are Trying to max out all 3 is ideal! Although that may not be possible for people whose study subjects and resources are chosen for them (such as people in school)
@MrShikaga3 күн бұрын
I am not sure “fun” is even necessarily the right word. What I have found is you have to love it. I have been doing this for the last year or so, going from 0 to fluent in Spanish, 4 hours a day studying on top of a job. It’s not fun per se, but I do love it. And it isn’t possible to get fluent ina language if you don’t love it, it’s just too hard and takes too long

The most important part is desire and motivation. What you are doing is a extreme side of self-development, not sustainable for most of people and too robotic for my taste but as long it keeps you happy it's all good. I would add also another point which really benefits me - quit X/Twitter. Most of tech accounts there are being run by bots or unemployed people who just create content for engagement based on bait like posts. Since I quit it entirely I have more time on my hands and I don't compare to anyone then myself yesterday and my coworkers - real people with real lives and it serves me really well
@jeffrey_codes8 күн бұрын
You've got some great points. Quitting social media is indeed a cheat code. X/Twitter is worse than others because it's _sometimes_ really useful, so you can trick yourself into thinking that scrolling all day will get you somewhere. My happy medium is only opening it on my personal computer - never my phone or my work computer And yeah, most people would not be happy studying 4 hours a day. If it was 4 hours staring at book I wouldn't be happy either - I take breaks, play with my kid, help my wife out, sometimes eat breakfast with the family. It usually ends up more like 2-3.5 hours of stare-at-book (or equivalent with coding).

this video is so good. i'm not certain i can go to a full 12 hour day but using pockets of time to study, and moving towards your goal every day feels great as it accumulates. the only thing i didn't totally agree with is podcasts. i find a lot of inspiration from some podcasts and they often spark energy to continue down the path i'm going. i'm thinking of ones like the changelog, long serious conversations with developers. but yes, often it is possible for them to be empty entertainment. listened to this video while making my child's birthday cake by the way. :D

Awesome, I've been trying to find ways to make a new schedule since I believe I'm going to be pretty busy this year. I do not have a family and I'm planning on going part-time with a gov't job if I can land it so I can focus on my studies and projects more so I'm on easy mode. My issue is building up enough stamina to get myself into productive states in which I can work for more than 10 hours a day. It definitely takes more time to enhance your willpower and the analogy about lifting weights is spot on. Just found your channel a week ago and my goal for this quarter is at least 4 hours of project-related work so I can gain some momentum again. Also, the tip on having a "default activity" is very useful especially when you consider the amount of idle time that accrues throughout the day. It may be hard to make the brain active during these periods, but you can at least feed it podcasts and less dense information while it's recharging so it keeps the brain within the context of your current whereabouts.
@jeffrey_codes8 күн бұрын
Congrats on opening up the time to be able to do projects! The stamina is definitely a hard thing to build up, and it takes time. Some things that could help: * Have a project you're truly interested in - when I was first learning coding, I made a bunch of games in Javascript, which had a natural addictive loop as I tinkered with the game rules and added features * Drink caffeine during the session. Lots of downsides to caffeine, but it does make it so you're unnaturally interested in whatever's in front of you * Have the time set aside, but let yourself stare off into space or stretch or even nap if you need to. Just don't do anything 'fun' except for studying/working

This is some ideas to make the gym time more effective. Try listening to a audiobook or lecture or podcast of the thing your studying. When going to the gym, at the gym and when leaving the gym. This depends on the subject you study. If you want muscle you could use super sets to get more done in less time. This is under the condition that this do not effect the performance of each exercise you superset. This could also be bad if it makes the gym time

Bro, no... there is no way you're going to digest all the information in a book or lecture while lifting heavy weights. Multi-tasking is terrible for information retainment. If you're setting aside time to do something, do JUST that thing. The more things you try to juggle whilst doing that, the worse you'll perform at the thing you set out to do in the first place.

Great video about habits, maybe I'm misunderstanding but you already have a job and a family, spending time with loved ones should be the priority, even if you study as a hobby 4 hours is a lot.
@jeffrey_codes8 күн бұрын
If I wasn't prioritizing my family, I would be spending EIGHT hours a day studying... or maybe eight hours a day playing video games 😂

I think that's fine as long as they both mutually agree on it and have the same expectations about it . Lot's of people have meaningful personal projects that they wan to work on , and lot's of people want to see their friends and family succeed and are willing to make some sacrifices to support them.

How do you decide what to focus on for your study time? Especially when there's so many things you have to learn like ML/AI, data science, projects, leetcode etc etc. How do you set aside time for each topic your studying? Currently struggling with this.
@jeffrey_codesКүн бұрын
It works best if I focus on one subject/project at a time. I can sometimes handle two, and if I studied/learned full time it could probably be 3 or 4. Anything more and very little gets done. But still better to focus on one at a time How to choose which one to study is harder and different for everyone. I go for ones that are immediately useful and foundational ones that unlock future studies/projects

great tips. I'm most interested in learning more about the last bullet. how do you make/keep the studying fun? thanks!
@jeffrey_codes6 күн бұрын
Two main ways: * Study things that I find inherently interesting * Study things that can be used at work or in a project Ideally a mixture of both. If you're not interested in it at all, it doesn't matter how useful it is at work - you're going to hate doing it at work too. And if it's not useful at all for your career, then it's purely a hobby and you shouldn't force yourself to do a hobby

Curious about what you mentioned regarding psychological injury with the gym. I got super into working out from never going to the gym and super into shape, (hurdle 1), and then tore my ACL, which ramped up my fitness journey even more (hurdle 2), and I even competed in a powerlifting competition about a year after my surgery (hurdle 3). What happened next confused me, but I ended up being too scared to return to the gym once I didn't have that next hurdle or obstacle to overcome, and I got too anxious to go consistently for about a year now. I've since returned with the goal being 'to go every other day', and that seems to have helped me get back to it with lower stakes.

I was just thinking about this today because I need to get a ccna as well as focus on getting computer science degree this year. I had a moment where I said idk why this past month or so I just have a hard time getting started and desire to listen to clubhouse rooms and play a mobile game, so I’m not focused on studying.

Focus on a building a project that interests you, not on getting a degree or certification. I could never study something just because someone told me to!

Hey man, I watch a lot of similar videos to this (spend too much time on youtube) and this one is seriously extremely good, I hope you make more! Question (which is what I'm currently struggling with), when you sit down how do you get yourself to actually do work and compelete tasks, rather than just scrolling reddit/news/youtube/procrastinating? and what is your start of work day routine? (e.g. mine is check inbox, brain dump everything, write out tasks i need to do for the day, do them).

thanks so much for this video. i find one thing i struggle with, which you pointed out in the video as well, is staying in the same room for a long time. could you talk about how you dealt with this some more in detail? for example, i feel like the natural light in the room is very important. I was wondering what your study setup is, do you do books on the same desk or mostly online material on your monitor? it would be great if you could break down (by hour or by 30min block) physically where you spent each during the 4hr study block and 8hr work block to not feel exhausted. thanks so much

How to keep going while learning new things and not seeing meaning?
@yugeswarreddy40088 күн бұрын
Do projects
@jeffrey_codes8 күн бұрын
If you don't see meaning, that's a signal that what you're learning might be useless - or at least disconnected from your life. @yugeswarreddy4008 is correct, do projects And also switch to something that you find interesting, rather than just something you think you "should" do.

Do you have a system of logging your learnings? Writing down notes from learnings, tracking what you learn in cources etc I would gladly listen how is this organised, either in spread sheets or some form of systems like trello/obsidian/notion. Also, if you have day2day optimizations that keep you sane (organising grocery lists, keeping handyman database for home etc), same applies (would be really interesting to hear)

Great video! One big tip is to block out any and all political content on news/twitter/reddit. Its stress with no upside. Spending the mental energy on bettering yourself will have a much larger impact on your situation.

Thank you for sharing - out of curiosity, what is the app/ website being used at 0:30 to show your daily schedule? Not sure if this is available to the general public, or if Jeffrey you made this yourself. If others know of websites that do something similar, would be greatly appreciated.
