I am so excited to see your dark studio walls! I also got so tired of white apartment walls and had to make a change, and honestly? It's been the greatest change I could have made. I used to be so easily distracted in my space, and now my dark walls keep me grounded and make painting so much easier. Dark, matte walls are rather common among oil painters because they kill light bouncing around your studio, among other benefits. Looking forward to the makeover!

I didn't go super super dark, it's more of a nice gold beige! possibly I might film and post a video if I give my attic bedroom a makeover, we'll see

I paint all my full illustrations in grayscale first too, its so much nicer to think only about value at the start since it carries a piece so much. Also love the view of trees outside the windows of your new studio room.

It was fun to see someone else's experience with grisaille! Doing the values, structure, and colour all at once can feel like a lot at once so grisaille really helps me not worry about the colour until later. I love glazing, but I don't do every layer as a glaze, so I use grisaille more as a guideline so I don't forget where certain objects and details are once there's more paint down on the canvas.
@KelseyRodriguez
@KelseyRodriguez Жыл бұрын
That approach def sounds like the best of both worlds, I was struggling so much trying to get a full color piece from just glazing that I ended up just giving up. Will absolutely try this going forward!
@lourdes_paints_stuff
@lourdes_paints_stuff Жыл бұрын
@@KelseyRodriguez Yeah doing only glazing must be really tough to pull off. I much prefer to just paint normally and glaze where I want. Glazing is a really great tool for building depth and drawing the viewer's eye though. One tip I heard was, if you're painting over a grisaille with colour, to make sure your grisaille layer is slightly higher in contrast than your actual values. The contrast in the painting reduces with each additional layer of paint, so higher contrast in the grisaille layer can make sure there's enough contrast at the end. If you ever decide to try glazing or grisaille again, Lachri Fine Art has a simple intro to it that helped me a lot when I first tried it. She uses acrylics in the demo, but the techniques can work with thin layers of oil paint too kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWTCgJ2Erahka80

I love that you painted your walls. I, too, thrive off colors. I remember my favorite kitchen was bright green walls with a slightly creamy, lemon yellow. It was one of the few things that kept me happy during a fairly...negative time in my life. Even as a teen, when I finally got a room of my own (my sister and I shared), Mom let me pick the color, and I chose a lovely turquoises. I still have vivid memories of my teenage room because of the happy color I got to pick. Now I'm back in an apartment where we're not allowed to paint the walls. It's at least not white walls: they're all like a boring beige, but it's better than no color at all XD Light green is also a nice relaxing color, that I think works well for calming and keeping focused :3 Lovely video, glad you got chill and do a video YOU enjoyed. I got to work on my own art while enjoying the calm discussion :3 Have a nice move!

Blurring the reference photo is genius! I’m just starting to try to teach myself oils and I took my reference photo on my DLSR, so it’s nice and crisp. That’s great for the photo, but it’s definitely tripping me up when I’m trying to paint. I definitely try to focus on the details way too soon! I think I’ll give blurring it a try! 😁

Kelsey, I really love your art videos and I loved that you made another art vlog >_< I mostly on the digital art but It's so REFRESHING to see your takes with oil matching something I already see with digital... Like, I had my share of painting in black and white but I'd NEVER thought this to be a classic technique on art history... I also love that you bring art history (which I like even more now than when I started watching your videos)... Like, I still didn't manage to get much money out of my art, but your channel (with videos of you painting and talking) remembers me the joy of making art... And I think I'm finally getting my way out to study, practice and produce something that please me, not a vague idea of what I think other people will like... OMG this comment turned out huge hahaha I just wanted to comment 'cause you asked for in the title (I'm a little shy and English is not my first language) and I write a lot... Anyways, thank you for the video, I really loved the paintings (although the first one I confess I preferred in b&w) and I can't wait to see your new studio tour x3

I love your content, I learn a lot and it’s been really helpful. I just wanted to mention that the pronunciation of Gaussian is like Gow see an. He was a mathematician Carl Gauss and did lots of cool stuff for physics and math which he probably never would have guessed does so much for digital art too. Anyway this isn’t a criticism or anything like that, just thought I’d share the info I have im case you’re interested. Also I love the new space, congrats!

If you want to abstract your references a bit, I would also recommend to try out the Median Filter or Posterize. Median blurs interior but keeps sharp edges, Posterize simplifies the value structure

OMGGGGGG I'm so in love with your new studio space! The sunlight and the windows? AHUGHH it's gorgeous! And I think the paint you ended up going with is so nice in there, too. I was one of the people hating on the warm yellow color LOL but it's so bright! I doubt you'll have an issue with the windows you have offsetting any light, but if you do find difficulties, you can always have, like, some white posters on the wall in the corner where you paint so the reflected light isn't too tinted :) I've been studying perspective! I wanna draw and paint more hard surface things (i've been enamored with like, construction equipment lately? at least partially bc my house is surrounded in construction LOL but also they've got fun tech parts!), so I've been practicing making cleaner lines and better depth so any hard surface things I draw don't come out squishy :)

yeah! I'm just finding the approximate center of the surface, and then the other two dots are the mid-points from that center dot to the edge of the surface. Sometimes I'll do a whole dot-grid this way, other times it's a more relaxed approach where I just add a couple!

Potential video series idea: for each approach or schedule you use for productivity or training, reflect on the pros/cons of that procedure a few months or even a year after. Like how effective was it at meeting your intention, how sustainable it was, how did you feel before/during/after implementation, how happy you are with the output quality, what you learned/improved on during it, do you recommend using this long/short term/at all, and whatever else you may need some distance from to really get a full analysis on. And if you really wanna go for extra credit, compare and contrast with other methods you’ve tried, prescribe what situations they’re better suited for (long term daily routine vs. burst when you need to be ultra productive for a week), etc. So for instance, compare the more vibes guided training you’re doing rn to the more structured stuff you talked about last year. Could also be applied to smaller things like “should you track your productivity, and if so how granularly? Does explicit tracking hold me accountable and sharpen my focus or does it just stress me out and make it a chore?” Mostly suggesting this bc it’s what I wish there was more of, longterm sustainability evaluation. I tend to see one BIG video like “Don’t make my mistakes”/“Do this if you want to succeed” or shorter “I tried x for a month” ones, but I feel like they’re not as broad in experimentation and comprehensive in analysis as I wish they were.
