Thanks, I WAS wondering! fyi: you can also use a plunger to unclog sink and tub drains. It's just kind of messy when you get that gunk up, so I want to give the zip it a try, especially for the bathroom sink... yukko! Also, if you need a plumber in for anything, have him or her also snake your bathtub drain. As long as they're there, it will cost very little more and it's such good general maintenance.

You should also have a basic tool kit too, something with a hammer, screwdriver (with multi heads) pliers ect. doesn't have to have a ton of things, just some basics. Just remembered this - When I was newly divorced I lived for several more years in our house that was built in the 1930's. (Talk about things that can go wrong.) One Thanksgiving I heard water running and discovered something in the hot water heater had broken and water was shooting out the top like a geyser, creating a small river that was slowly rising and making its way from the laundry area to the rest of the house. I turned off the hot & cold water by the heater but the water kept on flowing. Out of the blue I remembered having seen the water meter reader or someone from the department pulling up an iron lid in our front yard. No idea what it was but, with nothing left to lose, I went to that iron lid, pulled it up, and there was apparently the main water shut-off for the house. Whew!!! Realllly glad I have lived in apartments with maintenance people since I sold the house.

Other possibilities : - Pour hot water on the lid for few seconds. The metal expands more than the glass. Works for most of the cases. - Put a butter knife under the rim and with a slight twisting motion, make it loose. Do not use force, do it gently. Do it al over the rim. It will release the grip from where it is stuck. - if the lid is soft, just cut into it with a proper tool, do an x cut and pour it out.

Yes to all three. I lived alone before I got married and while I am happily married now, the step stool is amazing! At only 5 foot 0, I need it for when my husband is working and the cupboard shelf is too high, etc. I have a tool kit, drill borrowed from my dad, WD40 and anything else I can think of. If I can do something while my husband is working without needing extra help, I will.

hmmm... I have lived alone most of my adult life except for a short stint when I had room-mates. The step-stool I definitely agree with, but I've managed maybe by luck or .... or luck... to so far never need a toilet plunger or sink unclogger. I would suggest getting those strainer things that fit over the sink hole. My essential tools are a screwdriver set, a flashlight and a pair of scissors for the kitchen. Invariably screwdrivers are needed to open tins, put doors back on cabinets when they're loose, etc. Flashlights for obvious reasons. And scissors in the kitchen for cutting things like plastic and paper, and other things that are difficult to tear. Opening jars also - the screwdriver (Break the air seal, jar opens easily).

Mayim, as someone who has pretty much spent their entire adult life single, Here are things I recommend that EVERYONE (Note: Not just men or women, but EVERYONE) should know as an adult: 1. Basic home repair and maintenance. Plumbing, electrical, roofing, drywall, etc. There are many things the average homeowner (of either gender and of any height) can do on their own.\ 2. Personal Finance. Everyone should have a basic understanding of credit cards, loans, checking and savings accounts. 3. Self Care. Not enough people know this. Also, take a basic first aid course. 4. Basic Home Skills. Again, everyone should have some rudimentary knowledge of how to cook, clean, darn, etc. 5. Basic auto repair and maintenance. This one isn't as important if you don't have a car or ever plan on owning one. But if you do drive, THIS IS MANDATORY. Know how to check fluids, charge a battery, how to safely jumpstart a vehicle, how to safely change a tire, how to change lights, how to change a battery, etc. Also, every adult should have a basic tool kit for home, a fire extinguisher, a step ladder (not just a stool), a larger ladder, a toolkit for the car, etc. Also, there are simple "How To" books that can help with a majority of these tasks.

Mayim I'm married but my spouse is usually at work when something like a clogged toliet or screeching smoke alarm is happening. I have those very three items at our house as well and I can take care of the problem without waiting for him to come home. These items are essential for any home or apartment. If you can get a plunger and sink declogger for every bathroom if you have more then one. Also get the tapered plunger because the flat plunger won't do the job as well.

I pour a whole box of regular baking soda in the sink drain and then a bottle of vinegar... it bubbles and cleans the drain. It's rather helpful for most drains. And my sink tool is bigger/longer than that one. I totally agree about strong step stools and plungers too. It's also wise to get a hammer, tape measure, standard and Phillips head screwdrivers. A good pair of scissors, a flashlight... bug spray that shoots 25ft ( for personal protection only)

Mayim, I love you and I love your videos! So I would add something to your list. I, too, am a single mom of two boys in an old house - so I know exactly how you feel (especially, the bit about the sturdy step ladder)! The first things I bought when the boys' dad and I separated were tools. I really wanted to make sure that I could do as much as possible without asking for help. The most useful thing I bought was a ratchet and screw driver set. Honestly, I use those more often than I ever thought! I used to be the kinda girl who thought a couple screw drivers and hammer was enough... oh, I had so much to learn... and still do. We just moved into an older house with a lawn and I'm even looking into buying a lawn mower for the first time. I feel incredibly lame for discovering how to do these things so much later in life, but it is so empowering to not have to rely on someone for this stuff. 😁 thank you for sharing your thoughts and I will surely have to get one of those sink-unclogging thingies. ❤

I have used the plunger to unclog sinks. I've also used baking soda, vinegar, and boiling water. I've never seen the 'sink unclogging thingy,' but I've seen and heard of the 'plumbing snakes.' I may have to see if I can find either of them next time I'm in Wal-Mart or Lowes. I'm 4 foot 8-1/2 inches tall, and I have a three step ladder. It's a tad bit too short for the top of the counters, so I probably should get a taller one. I don't feel secure when standing on the very top of the ladder. Cool video. Great information.

Another nice, chemical-free way to help unclog drains is to use baking soda and vinegar. If your drain is getting slow or if it is clogged but the water does eventually drain out, you can dump some baking soda down the drain, then slowly pour white vinegar down there. It helps break apart the nasties that are stuck to the walls of the pipes. Of course, this wouldn't work in a sink that is completely clogged and full of standing water but it does help. I was surprised how well it helps. It would probably pair really well with that sink-unclogger-thingy. It also works with bathtub drains. :)

I have no one, but 3 step ladders, besides 5 step stools! and I'm 5"7' LOL. Single parent too! Another thing I would recommend: Several of those scissors that have a nut-cracker thingy in the middle: They are awesome to open tight sealed frasks! Obviously, a nut cracker will do too!

I had a strong sturdy step ladder for changing light bulbs and changing fire alarms batteries that is now useless because I moved into a house with 12ft ceilings and cannot reach them. With my dads borrowed ladder I can replace the light bulbs but still cannot do the smoke alarm by myself because I can only reach on the very top rung which you are not supposed to stand on. Have never had a plunger. Love my sink unclogger thing.

5 years post marriage ending, 5 weeks after full hysterectomy, my main sewer line backed up. After lots of work with a plunger, draino, finally calling the plumber, getting it fixed, then cleaning my bathrooms top to bottom, i finally put my kids to bed any my body aches! Thankfully i followed my dad around when i was a kid and learned A LOT about home maintenance from him. Heck, even minimum auto care - i taught my ex how to change a tire while pregnant.

Might also want to add a clip board to the list. When your smoke detector goes off, stand underneath and use said clip board to fan the air and dissipate whatever is making it go off!! Oh yeah you can also use it to write on too 😎

Im so grateful my parents raised me to be self sufficient as well as capable of minor home/car repairs. I can live alone just fine. Usually, I know how to repair something while my husband doesnt.

I'll add a vote for a 'gitter.' I'm old and short (getting shorter, ha!), and my gitter is about 5' long. On one end it has these sturdy, strong clampy things, the other has a 'pedal' that you squeeze with your good hand to make the clampy things come together. So, for small stuff I don't have to get one of my step stools (I'm 4'11''). Like stuff in the top of the closet, or top rack of cabinets, etc.

Different strokes for different folks. I've survived by avoiding marriage and living alone! Since the one item left behind in every apartment and home I've ever lived in was a toilet plunger, I will attest to the fact that money spent on the best plunger is money well spent indeed! I have all 3 of these items in top notch quality and an enviable tool box.

It's possible that if you have a newer 1.28 gallons per flush toilet you need to get a different profile plunger as the older style won't work.

Thank goodness I grew up in the Military and learned to do those things as I grew up. Oh, you might want to invest in a plumbers snake. One good hint is that when your finished getting all the nasty gunk out of your pipes is dump some baking soda down the drain followed by some white vinegar, This will finish cleaning out the pipe but make it smell better also.

Mayim, I can tell just by the way you say you're divorced that you don't like it. I understand that, I'm divorced also and I prefer being married. Living alone feels like an unwelcome consequence of being " different " after divorce. A lot of people can just bounce back and date everyone and then eventually will just " settle " with what is simply ok. But you and I are people who want real intimacy and authenticity and dare I say it, love. It's harder to find in this world than you think it will be. When I was younger I had no idea how isolating getting older seems to be once you get past the age that everyone pairs off and starts raising families and things like that, about 30 usually. I have actually felt rather lonely since then and it's been many years ago that I turned 30. I married to " fix " the loneliness and have a partner in life and that created problems I never, ever thought I would experience, and I am glad to be out of now post divorce. I've observed in this world that a lot of people just settle for having " someone " and just because others are married doesn't mean they are happily so. I think the best gift we can give ourselves post divorce is learning to embrace living alone. And like you said doing our own DIY tasks, and not thinking of ourselves as living in this strange state. Society tries to make us feel defective for not just getting another mate as though you can go to the store and buy them easily on sale. It's really tough to find a match, that is good for both people and healthy so that it can last. So if we " have to " be single perhaps we can find the grace in that state we live in. It is definitely a healthier state than remaining in a dead or toxic marriage just because we don't want to be alone. I think seeing how you struggle with the feeling of I " have to " live alone makes me feel better. As we all do when we realize we aren't alone in being alone, to reference that line from the Police song " Message in a Bottle " I'm so relating to this topic. I recently had to buy a mower after researching them and then mow my own lawn after my divorce. Now this isn't the first time I've mowed a lawn, but it has been a long time since I've done that. And yes, I find out that fixing the things that need repair in an older house that is now mine falls either to me, or if I can't do it to save money then I have to pay someone else. So that is a good incentive to do it myself because all of those " specialists " cost a lot per hour. We are in good company, there are a lot of women who live alone these days. Thanks for sharing your fun and helpful tips on how to survive, it made me smile.

I need one I am not tall at all for a man I am 5’6. So I need a chair to stand or kneel on the kitchen counter to do anything that requires any height. I feel you in that area. About the plunger omg you are so right, I needed one ASP and I went down to Lowe’s and got one that was supposed to be top of the line and I love it that thing is a miracle worker worth every penny.
