I'm a totally novice gardener - lots of "book knowledge" from reading and researching different things but very little actual experience getting my hands in the dirt. But I did receive several hellebores from a friend who was dividing hers and giving them away. Just stuck them in the ground in a bed that had been prepared several years ago then didn't touch them. No fertilizer, no mulch - the only care they got was sporadic watering. And they've done wonderfully. Feeling quite lucky now that I've heard they don't like being transplanted or divided!

The day before yesterday, i received the latest Logee's nurseries catalog in my mail. ALWAYS a treat! In yesterday's mail, I received Spring 2019 catalogs from: Bluestone Perennials, Spring Hill Nurseries AND White Flower Farm! With much nicer weather this week and all that "eye candy," my spring fever has kicked into over-drive! I haven't even glanced at the Bluestone catalog yet; but, the other two have SOOO MANY beautiful plants! I've been captivated by 3 groups of plants in particular: hydrangeas, peonies and HELLEBORES! I've loved flowers for most of my life. I'm 65 years old & that's a very long time for ANY love affair! Lol! I've nearly swooned over these catalogs; but, I've practically drooled over the pics & descriptions of the hellebores! (By the way, subscribers! 1) Most mail order nurseries start shipping hellebores all thru March & early April! So, it isn't too late to get them THIS SPRING! 2) FYI! I live in Charlotte, NC and the humidity is really high a lot of the time & temps get in the high 90's in summer. Despite this--in the past, some of my hellebores have started blooming in late November & bloomed into early May! If their roots are shaded & you care for the plants like Laura shows us, you can REALLY get your money's worth!) A little while ago, I decided to watch some Garden Answer before having breakfast. I was beyond happy to see that hellebores were the topic of today's video! Don't you just love when things happen like that? Laura, when you said seeing signs of flowers coming up does your heart good, yours isn't the only heart that you're lightening and making happy. I don't think I've smiled quite this much since Christmas! Thank you for a WONDERFUL start to my day! Happy Spring to you & your precious family! 🌾💜

They also self seed but make sure that you add new colors or varieties of hellebores to your patch of hellebores every few years to revive the genes of your seedlings if not they will start to become unattractive muddy colors . So by introducing new genetics to your patch and strengthen the genetics of them and insure bright beautiful colors and vitality to the gene pool . Laura I love your videos ! Much love to your sweet family from Dallas, TX. Happy growing in the garden as well as a human . Much Peace & Love !

Good morning Laura! You have really inspired me to start my own Helleborus collection. Last season I planted 3 “Anna’s Red” which are blooming beautifully, and I just added 2 more varieties yesterday. 😊😊😊 One is a beautiful deep pink double called “Winter Jewels Berry Swirl” and the other is “Winter Jewels Cherry Blossom” which is blush pink with a darker pink double center. They are beautiful and a wonderful addition to my shade garden! Thanks for the inspiration!🌸

Did this maintenance here in zone 7 about 4-5 weeks ago--so satisfying! Hellebores are every gardener's favorite in the dead of winter when little else blooms. And Pink Frost is such a floriferous hybrid. Have you tried the Frostkiss series, Laura? They are really showy, a bit taller and more upward facing with variegated foliage: Molly's White, Penny's Pink, Anna's Red, etc. I try to add a few new hellebores every year.

Laura I used your technique for hellebore care the day after I viewed this video. I must say that I saw nervous to remove the leaves from my 6 hellebores in the garden. But I did. I am glad to report that as of today 5/6/19, my hellebores are glorious. I have never seen them more vibrant, full and lush. If you can please do a small follow up on your hellebores. It may give others who may have been hesitant to give it a go next spring!

I now live in the Florida Keys, and it's too hot to grow most of those types of plants here. Unless it's in a container, and that's even a challenge...lol...I'm am orchid person bc of my environment. But I experiment with all sorts of things. Sorry for babbling!! 🤗👍💕🌷🌼🌱🍀

Looking forward to my garden, hope my hellebores survived the polar vortex. I will be putting more in my garden this year since they have both gorgeous flower and interesting foliage. I found a few late in the season after seeing them in one of. your videos. I added a variety of hostas and coral bells plus a Joe Pye Weed around a maple tree I planted 3 years ago. Can't wait to see what that bed will look like this year. I look for interesting leaf shapes and colors just as much as a pretty flower. There are even differences in the leaves of peony, which is one of the main perennials in my garden. Laura if you don't have the yellow itoh peony yet, try to get one, it is spectacular. I know you have a preferred color range but I think you would love it for the size of the flower as well as stem strength. In a bouquet it is gorgeous with all of the normal peony colors.

Very informative. I’ve never done anything to mine and they bloom every year. They start as early as January here in MA. Today I had to start doing something as they were getting swamped by ivy. Now I’ll try your clean up and feed regimen. I’m a bit later in the season than you were. Completely agree on keeping the flowers as long as possible.

Another informative video, Laura! Hellebores like a slightly alkaline soil, so if any viewers are in an area with acidic soils, adding some lime or keeping up with compost & mulch will help. Proper pH will help plants take up fertilizer too. But hellebores seem to be happy most anywhere - I've experimented here with adding some lime around mine here in western WA. I'd like to think they look better, but it's hard to tell! Love all the videos you do! - I'm learning so much [and buying stuff you recommend ;) ]

Elizabeth Whitehouse although it’s not super gorgeous there is a product that is basically a network of plastic spikes. You can walk on them barefoot, the spikes aren’t super rigid, it’s just uncomfortable, and cats HATE it. You can cut it to whatever size and shape you need it to. Look up cat prickle strips ❤️

Hey Laura, I have a question...do you ever get to a point where you have put mulch in a bed so much over the years that it gets too deep? Do you just take some out so the plants don't get buried?
