These are two frameworks for taking note-taking depending on the subject. Classes like math and science are more heavy on calculations while classes like literature or history are more heavy on arguments. These 2 simple frameworks are from How to Become a Straight A Student by Cal Newport. I'll also be showing you some walkthrough examples.

As someone in engineering, the best way I learned to take notes in my math heavy courses is not really taking any. I write on sticky notes and practice the the problem along with the professor or ahead of the professor. It's as if I'm constantly testing myself. I throw the sticky note away right after. In a way it also gives me just enough anxiety to remember most of it since I low-key fear I will forget it but it will be the only time I see it. I also sometimes write down and keep just the question and answer and would use them to study. If the class has hw problems, I do those over and over until I can do them without looking it up on chegg or looking for formulas (since they do not provide formulas). Then it just becomes 2nd nature at some point. This helped me get my first 100 since highschool. Edit: I also played 1hr of are you satisfied by marina on repeat when I studied lol, idk but that song really keeps me going. Don't worry, I never sacrificed my health/sleep/food for my grades, bc it makes me inefficient and waste a lot of time if I do that. Sometimes there isn't enough time to study and that's okay, we get em next time. Remember self care is important 👍. Anyway hope this is helpful to anyone, it might not work for everyone but it did for me. Besitos~

@Alberto Balsalm Well since the math courses have more to do with critical thinking skills. The practice does help, proof writing also helps understand the general concepts and how it works and why it works that way. Sometimes I study by just saying out loud the steps I have to take to do it. Such like "first put move things around to make it a linear diff equation, then find the integrating factor and plug it in..." so on and so forth. As for how successful, I started off not the best in school before I did this. I would just copy the problems that the prof would write and do the homework once, I would get B's and C's despite me being "good" at mathematics. Now I'm an A B student and I struggle less since I'm trying to solve it with the professor in a way. As for how much I study in comparison to my peers, I have some who study for 4 to 5 days, and I definitely don't do that. I study for about 2-3 days but without sacrificing my sleep or other needs (unlike some of my peers). Also keep in mind I'm busy with classes or work from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday so I don't have much time.

I am aspiring to study engineering but we need to give a exam for that called JEE (Physics Chemistry Maths). In JEE your concepts should be crystal clear because of the absolute maniac way the questions are framed. Without taking notes one is doomed to forget the definitions down the road, and definitions mean a lot cz a simple play of word in the question and everyone will be confused.

The QEC and PSA methods are really the same thing: 1. What are you trying to determine? => Question or Prompt 2. How do you figure it out? => Evidence or Solution 3. What result do you get? => Conclusion or Answer

I am a recent mechanical engineering graduate and as someone who went through a majority technical course of brain numbing math, I can say that taking notes of technical topics is a pain in the butt But, if you supplement it with practicing as many problem sets as possible, then your notes become your study guide and problem sets become your revision guide as practicing problems will help you revise the concepts you have learnt more efficiently I take short notes of the important concepts and formulations of a chapter in no less that 3 pages and then set out to solve practice problems to hone into the things I have learnt This is a more doable approach in my opinion

This is really two different ways of note taking: In technical classes, you start with concrete examples and work backwards to create a more general recipe for dealing with different problems. But in non-technical classes, you're given general questions and drilling down to find similarities and differences between certain things in the topic to solidify your understanding of the concept.

You are spot on. Back in the Dark Ages when I was in college, we weren't taught how to take notes. Sadly, even kids in middle school and high school today aren't taught how to take notes either. I'm way past college, but I take notes on non-fiction and fiction books because sometimes it's hard to keep track of many characters and events.

I'm an electrical engineer students. I personally write what the professor writes (unless it is something I feel very comfortable with) and add notes when necessary, for future review, and any tip\ commen mistakes the lecturer mentions. Alot of the solutions and theorems are based on the same principles, so I highlight in my notes whenever I see a new way of solving a problem, or a certain theory being used in a way I hadn't seen or thought of, or rarely use. I do the same for the H.W and tutorials. When I study for the tests, these are the things I pay most of the attention to, along with knowing the theorems and how we regularly use them for said curses. This saves me a lot of time when doing H.W, since the H.W questions tend to be more difficult them those we see in the tutorials. Some of the highlighted sentences aren't used as much in the current curses, but I often find them useful for curses in the next semester, that are more advanced, and that's a great feeling as well. I do really like math, so some of the steps I take aren't a must for getting a good grade, but they help understanding the bigger picture and making connections between the different curses. In physics knowing a bit of the history and the progression that led to the theorems help ALOT, because it's very easy to get lost otherwise.

I would say that I don’t agree in doing the whole QEC during the lecture because the professor won’t wait for you to finish writing and you cannot split your attention. My uni records the lectures so i try go over the lecture before (hopefully they upload it before the lecture) and try to have some understanding. This is when I think doing QECs might be best. Then I take notes on things that are not in the slide but the slides don’t have especially if it helps understanding. Because I went over the lecture before I just listen as much as I can and end of lecture i ask on anything I’m not clear on
