Hey mate, is this still the type of note taking you stick too, and whats one thing you’d recommend to a first year student?
@SJokes2 жыл бұрын
@@dylanbrunning Yeah throughout my whole first year I used the iPad for note taking. I needed to sell it a few months ago, but I really wish I could have kept it. I was actually motivated throughout the whole year to take notes and I think this is what made me so productive. Compared to my first semester this year, my productivity has fallen so much now that I'm writing on paper. I would also like to think that I was the influence that made some of my classmates get an iPad too :). I really want to get another iPad in the future when I can. I think for first year you really just have to try and stay consistent with your work rate, and I think this is just so much easier if you build a routine in how you take notes, but you also just have to keep your work well organised to do so.

As an engineering student, how well does the iPad handle engineering apps such as CAD?
@aldrichcervania88333 жыл бұрын
Great question! I only had a couple of assignments in 2nd year which required me to use CAD software, and I always used either my laptop or the uni computers. And it was WAY before I bought an iPad😅 So to answer your question… I’ve never personally used CAD on the iPad so I wouldn’t know BUT, I know that CAD is capable on the iPad but it’s more ideal on a computer or laptop for collaborative reasons. Also in industry, I believe you’ll be using PC’s or laptops anyway, so it’s good to focus on mastering CAD on those machines :)
@cjperras2 жыл бұрын
I can’t imagine running SolidWorks or Inventor Pro would be ideal on an IPad. My laptop used to run older versions of SolidWorks fine but 2022 has been giving it trouble. Now I refuse to do any CAD modeling on anything other than my gaming PC. That being said, try it and let us know how you fair.

Most of my mechanical engineering friends prioritised getting a laptop due CAD software, technical report writing and group projects assessments (most of them don’t have a tablet). Ay you good! I have a HP spectre 13inch x360 Core i7, 8GB RAM, 2017 model, and I’m able to run MATLAB easily and do light CAD work. For heavy CAD work in Solidworks, it’s recommended that you have at least 16GB of RAM, an SSD drive (Most laptops have SSD storage nowadays), and a 3.3 GHz processor [I’m referring to here: www.solidworks.com/support/system-requirements ] You can either go for Windows or Apple depending on your preference. Also consider your budget, but generally, most laptops should be fine running matlab but, it’s the CAD stuff that requires more computer power. Not sure which laptops to recommend but, I’d look at the M1 MacBook Air, or the Acer Swift 3 first🤝

Hey! I'm in my final year of ME, and my computer has a Ryzen 5 processor (which has surprised me, because I used to be more prone to buy an intel processor), and I have 16 Gb of RAM (which is I think just necessary to run CAD software. I used to have a computer with 8 Gb of RAM and SolidWorks crashed all the time because of the RAM, so the most important thing is the RAM!) and I also have 256 Gb of SSD and 1 Tb of HDD. I’d say laptop for engineering for sure. If I could do everything on the iPad I would but, there just somethings you NEED a laptop for, like coding in different languages (my primary reason), and overall the workflow of having a mouse and keyboard is still much more efficient than a touch interface. I’d prioritise getting a laptop first, then look into different iPad options second. Overall, I think iPad is more “pleasure” than “necessary” in this context.

However overtime, I didn’t like the tablet performance on it, and so I looked for a tablet, hence the iPad. I suppose I could’ve bought a surface pro, but overall it would have been more expensive and for me, buying a new 2-in-1 laptop would have been a waste of money since my HP spectre was already good enough as a laptop (and I wasn’t looking for a 2-in-1 replacement).
