Hey mate, is this still the type of note taking you stick too, and whats one thing you’d recommend to a first year student?
@SJokes
@SJokes 2 жыл бұрын
@@dylanbrunning Yeah throughout my whole first year I used the iPad for note taking. I needed to sell it a few months ago, but I really wish I could have kept it. I was actually motivated throughout the whole year to take notes and I think this is what made me so productive. Compared to my first semester this year, my productivity has fallen so much now that I'm writing on paper. I would also like to think that I was the influence that made some of my classmates get an iPad too :). I really want to get another iPad in the future when I can. I think for first year you really just have to try and stay consistent with your work rate, and I think this is just so much easier if you build a routine in how you take notes, but you also just have to keep your work well organised to do so.

watched first 3 minutes, and it instantly resonated with me! soon-to-be 2nd year engineering student from the University of Waterloo looking to change things up based on what I've learned in 1st year to better my grades and be a better student overall. all my notes were handwritten, so i was lugging around 7 binders for my 7 courses, but uh, that might not exactly be the route i wanna take going into classes in about a month. looking forward to the rest of the vid !

this is the best ever review for me [ because im an engineering student too ]. in lectures i still use handwritten notes bcs it realy does help and effective for me when im trying to take in those concepts from the lecture and when im revising or organazing my notes i used my macbook and i use the active recall and spaced repetition and i can say it's really very effective for me. i've seen a lot of videos regarding ipad on taking notes but most of them were medical students and i have enough those i needed to find a review of someone who's taking the same major like me, so i can see a perspective that i can literally relate on. and i am glad that this video is the one that i chose! thanks man, i''ll definitely gonna try the ipad, i think it's very worth tryinng

its nice to hear that you can take exams on tablet. When I used iPad 2 way back for home work, professors want us to print out the PDF questions, But I wrote on Notability then print out. Most professors was very confused and had to question their decision for minutes before accepting my hand in.

This is an excellent "How to Study" or "Best Study Practices" video...one excellent tip after another! The iPad was largely just a prop to highlight your excellent study disciplines. Going into my last year of Electrical Engineering and wish I had your excellent suggestions from day one! Maybe reorganize the "meat" of the video and focus on maximizing learning, study, and memory retention...then upload that video with different title and key words and see how the algorithms like it?

As an engineering student, how well does the iPad handle engineering apps such as CAD?
@aldrichcervania8833
@aldrichcervania8833 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I only had a couple of assignments in 2nd year which required me to use CAD software, and I always used either my laptop or the uni computers. And it was WAY before I bought an iPad😅 So to answer your question… I’ve never personally used CAD on the iPad so I wouldn’t know BUT, I know that CAD is capable on the iPad but it’s more ideal on a computer or laptop for collaborative reasons. Also in industry, I believe you’ll be using PC’s or laptops anyway, so it’s good to focus on mastering CAD on those machines :)
@cjperras
@cjperras 2 жыл бұрын
I can’t imagine running SolidWorks or Inventor Pro would be ideal on an IPad. My laptop used to run older versions of SolidWorks fine but 2022 has been giving it trouble. Now I refuse to do any CAD modeling on anything other than my gaming PC. That being said, try it and let us know how you fair.

Hi! I used my ipad mini 5 as my note taking device but eventually stopped - problem with retention and size. I switch back to paper again. I see that you are not using paperlike (or i jut missed it). How's the retention with the bigger ipad? I am still planning to buy the pro to use as my daily driver but worried about "retention issue". I normally write things to remember them. So my question is - how's the retention on the bigger ipad even without the paperlike?

Honestly, that is a great question! Even when I was using paper, I would ALWAYS take breaks. When I’m using the iPad, I have a matt screen protector, I use the true-tone feature, and I don’t use high brightness. Still, the iPad is a pleasure to use. Personally, I’ve never had a screen fatigue issue. But then again, I always take breaks anyway, and I always make time to do others things that doesn’t involve looking at a screen. Hope this helps! Got any more questions? :)

Most of my mechanical engineering friends prioritised getting a laptop due CAD software, technical report writing and group projects assessments (most of them don’t have a tablet). To stay within your budget, I’d prioritise getting a mid-range laptop (this seemed fine for my friends who do mechanical engineering) and an iPad Air (or iPad Pro 2018 model Refurbished) for writing notes and other stuff.

Ay you good! I have a HP spectre 13inch x360 Core i7, 8GB RAM, 2017 model, and I’m able to run MATLAB easily and do light CAD work. For heavy CAD work in Solidworks, it’s recommended that you have at least 16GB of RAM, an SSD drive (Most laptops have SSD storage nowadays), and a 3.3 GHz processor [I’m referring to here: www.solidworks.com/support/system-requirements ] You can either go for Windows or Apple depending on your preference. Also consider your budget, but generally, most laptops should be fine running matlab but, it’s the CAD stuff that requires more computer power. Not sure which laptops to recommend but, I’d look at the M1 MacBook Air, or the Acer Swift 3 first🤝

I used to have a computer with 8 Gb of RAM and SolidWorks crashed all the time because of the RAM, so the most important thing is the RAM!) and I also have 256 Gb of SSD and 1 Tb of HDD. This computer has worked perfectly for me and I hope this helps you make your choice!

@aldrichcervania8833

I’d say laptop for engineering for sure. If I could do everything on the iPad I would but, there just somethings you NEED a laptop for, like coding in different languages (my primary reason), and overall the workflow of having a mouse and keyboard is still much more efficient than a touch interface. I’d prioritise getting a laptop first, then look into different iPad options second. Overall, I think iPad is more “pleasure” than “necessary” in this context.

@@Fire-sj7jf For context, the 2-in-1 laptop (HP spectre x360 13”) that I bought back in 2018 (before uni) was the best value for me at the time. However overtime, I didn’t like the tablet performance on it, and so I looked for a tablet, hence the iPad. I suppose I could’ve bought a surface pro, but overall it would have been more expensive and for me, buying a new 2-in-1 laptop would have been a waste of money since my HP spectre was already good enough as a laptop (and I wasn’t looking for a 2-in-1 replacement). It was just that tablet element was “missing” and I feel the iPad filled that need.

Just one question: most of the time I download PDFs with just 1 slide per page (really bad organization, with a lot of space unused on every page); is there any app for iPad that would allow me to reorganize these PDFs in order to get two or more slides per page?

Bro sorry but ....most of things you had shown as engineering course ..is required for clearing entrance exam for engineering in India jee advanced
@aldrichcervania8833
@aldrichcervania8833 3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t know that still. But yeah, the modules you see me do in this video is the content we do as 3rd year Mechatronics and Robotics students at the Uni of Sheffield. Not sure how it works in India but, I’m assuming if you know this content for your ‘clearing entrance exam for engineering in India jee advanced,’ that just makes you a more informed Mechatronics/control engineer😉

Cad softwares and simulation softwares require strong computers. You will not be able to do that on an ipad. its too much. Just invest in a gaming computer. Its good for creo, solidworks, ANSYS, matlab etc
