Reintje looks so relaxed and ready for her workout. A lot of training goes into a dressage horse. Knowing when to collect, when to push and when to release is a skill for the experienced. A good trainer and a willing horse makes all the difference.

Thank you for sharing your training methods. Your horse are all so well handled and relaxed they are not frightened or afraid and associating bad memories with any part of the training process. They feel comfortable asking questions and are given time to use hir brain to figure out answers on their own.

It was so good to watch you training Reintje. Your explanations were clear and easily understood. Too often here in the USA horses and more importantly their riders are not properly taught. Watching a "Western Pleasure" riding class, or even competition, most of the pairs are heavy on the forehand. It is such a pleasure to see the two of you working together.

I suddenly learned in an aha moment the delicate balance between impulsion and collection. You ease the horse into the bridle with giving hands. You never urge a horse into an unmoving bit, but you use your hands to feel the mouth, and give the horse "room" to move up into the bridle AS you are moving forward. To NOT give the horse that rein is just kicking the horse into an unmoving bit which frustrates a lot of horses and causes a lot of tail switching. It is a subtle, dynamic balance. When I suddenly discovered this, I was riding my Saddle bred, and I just gave him some rein while maintain contact, and urged him forward. My sister was watching, and said "He is suddenly stepping higher, what did you do?"

We had nothing equivelent to what you do with these Friesians where I grew up (all over New England/northeast US). But we had a lot of good places to be involved with horses, riding, training, hunter/jumping and even formal "hunts." It is marvelous to watch what you do with these horses! I love the equipment (oh that I had a saddle with the pads in front of the legs!), and the training you do with them. I assume you have been trained over time to be able to advance these horses as you do :) Lovely! I do love to watch you with them, whether riding/training, or my favorite, when you walk amongst them... I appreciate all this you do, thank you!

It's better to practice small pieces more often. Wow, same with competition obedience dog training, especially during any off season from the obedience trials. It's called splitting as the opposite of "chunking," which is performing the whole exercise. I am also a former saddle seat rider who trained my Saddlebred to do basic dressage, especially the maneuvers that would serve us well in crowded Saddlebred pleasure classes.Line driving might help the heaviness on the forehand. It significantly helped a young Arabian I owned after the Saddlebred passed. Also, just letting the horse stand there in the line-driving bitting rig with its head way down reaching for the bit should help. My Arab was weak-moving behind and I think line-driving helped him, and it's fun. Fun for the horse usually if your horse has a work ethic, which I assume is a strong suit with Friesians.
