How I Turned Grocery Store Lychees into Plants

A couple years ago, I figured out that you can take your favourite fruit and grow the seed into a plant. Well I love lychees, rambutans and longans, but they’re pretty hard to grow. So I purchased the fruits from the grocery store and got all the seeds on damp pieces of paper towel to germinate.
Did they grow into plants? Trees? In this video, you’ll learn about the trials and errors associated with growing these exotic fruits in an urban environment - and in a cold zone like Canada.
Some cool facts you’ll learn about in this video:
1. Lychee, Longans, and Rambutans are all member of the Soapberry family.
2. Red leaves on a plant is typically a sign of new growth. As leaves mature, they often turn green. This is common and means young leaves have a different colour than mature ones.
3. Rambutans got their name because of their hair-like spikes and because the word “rambut” in Malay means “hair” - so cool!
4. Some fruits do well with stratification over a period of time. Stratification is when you place seeds in a cold environment for the winter to promote germination when spring comes back around.
5. Lychees have a romantic history. Legend has it that in ancient China, Emperor Li Longji bestowed lychees upon his favourite concubine, Yang Yuhuan, as a token of his love. Talk about a sweet gesture!
6. The name "longan" translates to "dragon eye" in Chinese, and rightfully so. When you peel the skin, the fruit's shiny black seed resembles an eyeball, surrounded by translucent, juicy flesh. Quite the mystical snack!
7. Lychees, Rambutans and Longans are rich in vitamin C, potassium, and other essential nutrients, making them not just delicious but also nutritious additions to your diet.
8. While they're delightful on their own, these fruits are also used in various culinary creations. From salads and desserts to refreshing beverages, lychees, longans, and rambutans add a tropical touch to many dishes.
9. Survival sticks can help deter pests with the sharp edges. They are wooden sticks or chopsticks or skewers or toothpicks.

Thank you so much for watching, always remember that I LOVE YOU and I’ll see you next week.

My grandparents used to have a longan tree but after they passed away and sold the place the new owner took down the tree. Every now and then when I eat them it reminds me of my childhood

you should try growing the Tropicana Banana (also called the super dwarf cavendish, or dwarf cavendish), it grows to a max size of just 1 meter and has edible fruit as well. I will be growing that in a pot alongside a 5m tall banana tree that will be planted in my backyard.

@2:15 unfortunately, you hadn't been doing everything right. Especially your re-potting procedure, it's very important to leave the roots, rooted to the soil. Take all the soil, with your rooted plant away from it's outgrown pot, and place it in a bigger pot with soil while keeping your plant rooted! This will make a massive difference in the health of your plants.

@@growithjessiewhere in Canada are you? E, W ? How far north, if you don't say city. We're in seattle. Have 2 fig trees, 6 years old. Got about 50 this year. Learned they're like conifers, the center got knocked off one by a grandson when baby tree, he doesn't get taller. But the other is about 10 ft, growing in Seattle. ❤❤❤ I'd love to try kiwi, some grow here. But lychee is my childhood fave, prefer rambutan for flavor. I think longan, if that's the smaller, woodier cluster kind(?) might fair well here. ❤❤❤
