How does exercise fit into this? The body needs energy to work out.

If you are eating enough calories to meet your goals, meal timing shouldn’t matter. However from a psychological point of view you may prefer to eat before you workout like I do but. I hope that answers the question? 🙂

@@PeteOnPurpose I’ve always felt crap doing fasted workouts like heavy lifting or running, but zone 2 cardio is fine fasted. I prefer to workout in the morning. When I have fasted I eat later on as it helps sleep, so exercising in the evening is counter productive as it wakes me up with those endorphins! Some research suggests fasting may work better for males than females. Check out the research by Dr Stacy Sims on fasting for females in terms of performance.

Yes, I’ve heard fasting may not be as beneficial for women, due to hormones. Sounds like you know your body well and are doing the right thing, eating before you train. 🙂

but is 24 hours really enough for autophogy? I've always understood it to be more like 4 days

Moderate autophagy occurs between 12-24 hours depending on the individual. However for significant autophagy you are right around 2-4 days. So it can be useful to throw in a longer fast occasionally. 🙂
