Just some time stamps to help me remember a few things . I've tried to capture the essence of the video rather than it's entirety . Please ignore if it seems irrelevant to you 😊 2:24 *Drawing on a larger canvas can get overwhelming as you can easily lose your sense of proportion while laying down line by line ... A pencil undersketch greatly helps ! 5:50 Collage of Reference Pictures 11:14 to 13:58 *Being over reliant on references is preferable to using no references though the former can hurt you in the long run . Unless . You retain the structure and forms of the reference images you're drawing and add it your visual library . And for that you need to really REFLECT and engage with the image and the process itself as you Sketch . * If you've drawn a car a gazillion times and still can't do it without reference then you haven't digested it effectively .... One thing that helps would be imagining ( and drawing ?) the object from multiple angles to get a good sense of it's form and structure . 14:57 Using one's own hands as references 16:09 -19:27 Being specific in looking for your references .It helps if you know well in advance what you seek to gain from a reference. What is your reference conveying ? Multiple things obviously . But you might be interested in a specific aspect . Such as Colour Pallettes , Shadow and Lighting (Mood ) , a quaint Texture of some sorts or even a specific pose . 17:44 Scale of some sort ? 20:34 -21:42 * Would it be wiser to begin inking from the head rather than the hand ? * Having a reference for the hand pose is helpful 22:19 While it's great to collect the necessary references before you begin so that you're not left scrambling searching later that's not always possible. Sometimes you can't anticipate a few specific things for which you require reference . Such as an ornamental design of sorts . It depends on the level of detail you're aiming to lay down.

I’ve thought about the reference question for a long time. One solution would be to copy something and then immediately follow up with a couple quick iterations of that object from memory in order to help commit that short term memory to long term. You’d then proceed to compare your non-ref drawings to the reffed ones, find the mistakes, then repeat the process again. At some point during the future you’d want to sit down and draw a page of the object in question from imagination, perhaps at different angles.

So much of learning to draw is memorizing shapes and building fine motor control. The shapes thing cannot be overlooked, if you know the general shape of an object, even objects in perspective, you can then infer what the smaller shapes will look like inside with much greater accuracy. For example, you see all these artists on KZbin that seemingly skip the construction phase of drawing and yet still manage to create convincing drawings, even in perspective. I’ve believe this is a matter of memorizing shapes of objects, in particular the contours of objects in perspective, either through conscious effort or via implicit knowledge, and then inferring the general look of smaller objects within said shapes. It’s all about building a library of shapes in your mind, everything else is subordinate to that, perspective included. If you understand the shape, the outline, the contours, ect, and you can rotate that in your mind eye, you will draw accurately.

Very informative Video! I always use several references for a single thing I want to draw. For example, I illustrate the pagan witches' sabbats in an Art Nouveau style and create a pinterest pin board for each one where I collect my references. The upcoming one is Mabon and I want to incorporate acorns. Therefor I collected at least 3 different references for acorns which I can then take whatever I need for the acorns I'm going to draw. I also prefer to use photography or real life for references rather than already drawn/painted pictures, unless I admire the art style and want to practise it to eventually gain something for my own style :D

You've got a good amount of bronzing on the legs and tassets, but I feel you've left the vambraces and the backbraces lacking. Also the cuirass itself I think should have more bronzing. Based on the length of the quillon block, I think the grip shoul be longer and the pommel shoul be larger on the sword. I also think the visor slit on that armet is a bit too wide.

I think this is a great video and all, but I have a question about the drawing. Why is the knight hitting it’s opponent with the flat part of the blade? Is there a reason for that or was it just not really considered?
@spingmufh10074 жыл бұрын
I think one of the collage pictures demonstrated this, not for sure. Knight did this in combat if they didn’t want to dull the edge of their blade when hitting hard, could happen in combat too. One thing to remember is that both knights are wearing thick metal plate armor, it’s all about blunt force trauma, the edges aren’t going to matter as much even though swinging like that would be more efficient.

I’m not sure I’ll be able to do it then and retain the information and build a visual library I am over reliant on reference : (
@Sina-aka-potatosupreme3 жыл бұрын
I never understood the problem that some people have with using references. I imagine that kings and queens had to stand still for hours for a painter before photography was invented. That is using a live reference. Sure they could sketch out the general features, but not a realistic painting (I guess).

Hmm.. you need more reference on XIV/XVth century swords, Moma...
@ducksoff72362 жыл бұрын
Whoever made that "over reliance on reference" comment is ignorant and obviously doesn't draw. It takes decades to build up enough of a visual library to draw "anything" and even then you still just don't know how to draw everything! Especially if you haven't seen something before. You effing see it order to draw it. Then to commit it to memory you have to study it and draw it over and over from multiple angles. While LOOKING at it. Go ahead don't use refences. I don't care that your drawings stay crappy and you slow down your own progress.
