I'm 59 and I "re-started" playing the guitar this year, after a 45 year hiatus. I've been sucking up KZbin videos, your channel (which I love), other channels. I've learned "tablature", strums, chords, riffs, etc. I've got bloody finger tips, four guitars, now, and I'm doing what I should have done 50 years ago. Thanks, Lauren. You inspire me.

Do yourself and your fingers a favor; buy a set of Ernie Ball "Zippy Slinky" strings. They're the lightest strings you can get, and they don't sound any different than the heavier ones... they're just easier to frett. I've got them on my Telecaster and they make a world of difference.

I Winged it freestyle..was nice I progressed and happy..10 days ago Tripped or hit by an Algorithm.. and Lauren Popped up..I watched a few videos...the academia appealed to me...10 days in... nice progression...easy on eyes and ears and she show shortcuts...her acoustic lessons have amped up my electric guitar skills...I would recommend her to anyone wanting give a six string a go....she's dedicated and very caring..

LOL I've been "auditing" beginner lessons from every single online guitar instructor Lauren named, so that was an it's-a-small-world moment. She's absolutely right that her experiences set her apart as an instructor. I find that if all of them are teaching a song/chord/technique, she's usually the first one who explains it in a language that makes sense. I get the feeling that's a result of having to struggle through these things on her own. Having said that, I think modesty prevents her from either seeing or claiming her greatest strength, which is just a natural talent for teaching. I've had to dive deep to find out how to play some obscure punk songs, and learn from a mumbly, goes-way-too-fast dude sitting on his bed (and I'm grateful to them for it), so I appreciate _good_ teaching, and I have to say, Lauren is one of the (if not the) best at keeping the learning experience from feeling frustrating, making it fun, even when it's hard. That's not just experience. That's a gift, and she has it. Anyway, hats off to Lauren. Also, she has the best tee shirts.

Oh wow. That's very kind of you to say. That really means a lot. I didn't go to school to learn how to teach. So I think I doubted myself a lot. I'm glad that my teaching resonates with you. ☺️

Lauren, thanks for taking us through your guitar journey. During COVID, two years ago, I started playing taking lessons from Justin and Andy at age 65. I have enjoyed their instruction. Last January, I decide it was time to take in person lessons. I explained to the instructor that I wasn’t interested in Music Theory, I knew how to read tab and just wanted to learn to play more songs and correct any bad habits. After 3 months I quit as the Instructor was trying to teach me theory. On a whim, I was looking for instruction to play Heart of Gold and came across your you Tube instruction. Out of curiosity, I inquired about the 7 step class and decided to give it a go even if I had to take a step back. I have been able to move through it fairly quickly as I was proficient at some of the basics. What I have enjoyed is your structure, detail, and realistic expectations. After the bad experience with the in person instructor, you methods are a breath of fresh air! Thank you!

You are so easy to listen to and learn from. I'm one of those late bloomers, took lessons at 58 years of age. I have always been into music, singing and listening. I even wrote songs before learning guitar because life got in the way. Lol I took disability and moved my mom in with me at 57 years of age. Taking lessons was a lifetime dream and it helped keep me sane. Lol love your attention to detail and understanding us old folks. I'm 67 now and still love learning. Thanks.

Hi Lauren, I signed up for your 7-level course some months ago. One of many plusses of your course is that you break things down and actually show us what you are doing so that we aren’t left wondering… ‘wait...how did she do that? I am making progress, slowly, which I keep hearing is the way it must be. I am old, can’t play standing up, and most definitely can’t sing (just ask anyone in my family). I like the songs that are instrumental. I appreciate slower-paced songs. My goal is to learn the Chet Atkins arrangement of the Don McLean song, Vincent. Meanwhile, the guitar has become my go-to when I need to ‘relax, but stay sharp,’ a necessary skill for an old geezer.

Lauren, I am so happy to hear you say so much of this. My friends said it would be so cool if I learned guitar. I got an acoustic guitar when I was 14 and my first teacher wasn't sophisticated, but he had me playing things I liked immediately. If not, I never would have stuck with it. I found teachers who went beyond my first teacher and I got to the point where people said, "That guy is really good." At various times, including now, I taught guitar lessons. I played every chance I got whether it was folk, rock blues, jazz or choral accompaniment. Honestly, classical guitar was not for me, but I learned valuable lessons from it.

I tried to learn to play about 15 years ago then put it off because I divorced and moved to another state to start over. My sweet (new) husband gifted me with a guitar this past January and then gifted me with another beautiful one for our 13 year anniversary this past weekend. Greetings , Lauren . I first picked up a guitar in 1983 , it's a ,Kapok Classical / Flamenco Guitar . It is still a firm friend to this day . My second , was a Strat Fender copy with a finger action so high , it was probably easier to stand on the neck ( Even with its adjustable bridge ) . Then came an Ibanez lead and an accompanying Bass . Sadly , they all sat playing home to spiders for many years . Then , I came across your channel which inspired me to pick them up again . Still a little rusty due to Arthritis and a recent injury . But many thanks for helping me evict those spiders and setting me on the road again .

Luv ya. You are an inspiration to many and a great teacher. Thank you. I wanted to learn to play the guitar in the 70's but it wasn't until I purchased an acoustic guitar in 2003 in attempt to fulfill my dream of becoming a guitarist. I gave up my dream in the same year, it was difficult learning from the studio teachers. But OMG, I stumbled on your KZbin channel and learned more in a few days than I did in months with other teachers. I am now 65 and you have shown me how much fun and how easy it is to play the guitar. So I am starting this journey with you, my mentor that looks like a 26 year old college grad. I had that 20 year old guitar serviced the other day. I am having fun now playing the guitar, thanks to you Lauren.

Hi Lauren! Great, great story! We walked the same paths, no formal guitar lessons, and yes, I hold my pick the way you do. I deveoped a finger pattern, but need to learn the correct ones. First song I learned was, ' you are my sunshine'. My cousin and l were learning together, playing 'country music'. My Brother taught me some surf songs like 'Wipe Out'. Then I put my guitar down until my Son develped in interest, yeah he plays better than I do. No one to do music with , I played a Cd easy favorites, and was amazed I can play along with them. I have a guitar bud that comes over and we play, but always adding more music though! Thank you for your awsome story. Lauren - your piano lesson experience sounds exactly like mine. Chords were something I had to learn for the yearly guild auditions, but nobody taught me how to actually use them to make music. Flash forward 40 years to my first guitar lesson. I was fully expecting Teacher to hand me the Guitar Etudes 1 book and start on page 1. Instead, he asked me, "Well, what do you want to play?" Mic drop. I came back the next week with a CD of Brown Eyed Girl. Teacher tabbed out the intro, showed me the chords, and I was on my way. Like you, if they had showed me how to have FUN on a piano, I probably would have stayed with it. So glad they didn't!

Wow - I relate so much to this!! I, too, tried to apply piano techniques to learn guitar as a teen and it just did NOT work. I also suck at sight reading despite many, many years of piano and band. I learned piano via Suzuki method, so I have to hear and sometimes see before I can do. My dad is an awesome guitarist and tried a few times to teach me but again - I just didn't get it. Suddenly during the pandemic it hit me. I saw one of those pandemic TV concerts and BIllie Joe from Green Day was playing Good Riddance on his guitar. I was like "Wait, I know those chords...I can do that." So I looked it up on YT and learned it. Since then I've done that with so many songs - it's how I found you and your amazing tutorials - THANK YOU!!! ❤My current challenge is learning picking with Dust In The Wind. Seeing this vid, I need to learn Landslide as well. 🙂And learn barre chords. I just...UGH. All that aside, I love your teaching style and find your videos super helpful - thank you for all you do! Seeing how you started is very inspirational. I'm so glad I saw this today after a lapse in practice time. Picking it up right now. 🙂

Quite a guitar journey you had and a range of music genres! Have you done anything with the classic era of Chicago when Terry Kath was their guitarist? Songs like ”25 Or 6 To 4", "Make Me Smile", "Beginnings", " Poem 58", and "Byblos" are some that showcased his talents.

Oh man, no I haven’t done any Chicago stuff.

@@LaurenBateman When they were known as "The Chicago Transit Authority", they were the house band at the Whisky a Go Go in LA. One night between sets, Jimi Hendrix, who was in the audience, went to their dressing room after catching their first set. He walked up to their sax player Walt Parazaider and said, "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs and a guitar player that's BETTER than me! You wanna go on the road?" They said "YEAH!". And that's how they became Hendrix's opening act on a national arena tour. Hendrix had a ton of respect for Terry Kath, rest in peace. 🎸

LB , for those of us who go back far enough ( and it is a long way for me), we had the one and only Mel Bay book to learn from! (Was there ever really a Mel Bay?) . I picked up the guitar because my friends had a band and I picked up a lot of tricks but also bad habits along that way. I have two main charts: a chord diagram by keys and a note diagram for keys. Had them for decades. Tab always seemed confusing so I usually pick it out myself or I “consolidate” the individual notes by the chord being played. Sight reading seldom gets the song right for guitar , but can be useful to get started? Everybody has a different tale and that’s what makes the planet go round. Main thing is to get to a point you like hearing what you’re doing. Rock on kid!

I do remember Mel Bay. I even have a few of the books myself.

What a great story Lauren. I started playing Trumpet in 4th grade and was asked to play with the 5th-8th grade band as a 5th grader so I had a solid base for music. I always wanted to play guitar and started self taught lessons numerous times. It wasn't until I took lessons that things started to click. 3 years in I am loving learning, what I don't know about guitar. Thank you for sharing your story because it resonates in myself, getting to the level I really want to play at. I'm very close to playing on stage with friends and playing songs I enjoy and like. I almost pulled the plug last April to join a guitar player on stage in Key West and play along with him. Next year..... next trip to Key West I hope to be playing onstage. :)

My daughter turned 40 this year and looks 26. We must have drank some good water in 1983 to produce ageless wonders. My first guitar was at age 14 and it was junk. My 2nd was a new 1975 Takamine and still play it to this day. Self taught except when I was 40 finally took lessons from an outstanding teacher who, like you, asked me what I wanted to play. Then he got a gig out of state and I stopped playing until 2020, then got DeQuervains Tenosynovitis, which was a 6+ month set back. Can’t play barre chords like I used to, but enjoy playing nevertheless and really enjoy your steady, detailed, patient approach. Some of the other YT teachers are more performers than teachers. Chords are not displayed, plus their pace is far too fast for me to absorb and improve my skills. Thank you for sharing your relatable journey!

Hey kid, thanks for putting this little bio together. Forty is old, that’s funny. I took lessons in late seventies with a series of books similar to Hal Leonard. Memory escapes me, but it may have been an earlier pressing of the same books. It was good practice for learning to pick without looking, but snoozeville . Luckily my kool teacher turned it around into chords. Turning point songs were Sweet Home Alabama and Wish You Were Here. Even basics of these songs sounded so kool to play. I am 58 (still not old) and enjoy being able to play along with my favorite songs. I really enjoy your lessons and how you break down the songs. Your approach makes things a little easier to understand. You rock! JP

Very interesting, thank you! I learned classical guitar with 13 years. Pure sight reading. No chords. I lost interest because I wanted actually to play Beatles songs, but that was it. With 40 years I took piano lessons. Classic. No chords. Then I got a new teacher and I requested him to teach me only the great stuff (far too difficult for me like Beethoven Sonatas). But he taught me how to analyze music sheets. He took apart all the classical pieces and showed me the chords in Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Paul Simon, etc. Chords I, IV, V, etc. It helps me until now to understand music. Now I am learning pop guitar again, on KZbin, with on-line course (not yours, I am sorry but I like very much your work and frequently I look in to learn this and that). In short I think music theory is a great plus when studying guitar but I acknowledge that some of the best songwriters never knew anything about theory.
