Mr. Proctor, As a paralyzed disabled veteran at 53 who played in high school, I'm having to start all over myself. If you're a military man, discipline, patience, and have a little fun with it. It's really great you're getting into this Sir. As you see, I know my manners well. And this young lady is fantastic. I've learned more from here than I did in high school and I got good grades for playing. Please keep up the good job. What's helped me is to find someone else who also wants to learn, and after you've practiced enough, to teach them what you've learned.

Thank you for such a genuine caring personality and an intuitive way of teaching and relaying instructions. I am a very small framed, 63 year old man battling a Parkinson’s related disease called Oromandibular Dystonia that has taken away most of my ability to speak and chew and swallow, my neurologist has said that learning to play an instrument like a guitar could possibly help heal the nerves and synopses in my brain. I plan to try and invest more time in learning to play, thank you and God Bless You.

I'm 70, and an avid golfer. When Covid hit, I decided to learn something new... Guitar! I began my guitar learning with a local shop owner who sings like John Denver and can play cowboy chords and sing amazing. After 7 months he sent me to a different teacher because I was asking things he didn't do himself like Travis Picking, or Music theory. I now have a very well classically trained teacher who hammers Music Theory and plays Jazz, and loves the Beatles. (which are all over my head). So I spend a lot of time on the Internet learning from great teachers like you. I have learned a bunch of new songs and am working on Travis Picking with your videos. You are in a class by yourself when it comes to breaking down hard things and teaching them. I am active on your FB channel and in your 7 level class, but your "How to" videos are SOOO helpful. Thanks for your hard work and insight. (Ps Saw that new guitar!! I still love you Crafter, and you can make such great tone with it. And for all you who think 70 is too old, I have passed my 2 grandsons ages 13 and 16 who started before me but only do Rock guitar riffs. It requires a lot of practice and dedication. Lauren will get the most out of your practice... which is the secret to learning at our age. Probably at any age...

Lauren, your comments are right on for older players. I’ve purchased several learn to play courses and while they teach the basics they seem to focus on making their students rock stars. Your right 71 year old fingers and reflexes don’t move like a 21 year old and you need to have fun by playing simpler songs. Reality to me is small hands with rather fat fingertips make playing a challenge but by focusing on what you can do is positive and fun. “Enjoy the journey”

Tip #7 really hit home with me. I had a younger teacher who I think was intimidated by my previous music experience in other instruments. I STILL NEEDED HELP! Looking back on it now, I realize he was just a really bad teacher, but changed to someone else who basically tested me on what I already knew and then went from there. It was such a difference and I learned more in 6 weeks than I had with the prior teacher in 6 months.

@Lauren Bateman, really loved the end of your video when you state about modern music being bad. There used to be an advert that stated the following "You can't sing, You can't play, You sound aweful". It does sum up a lot of music, when playing an instrument make sure it can be heard, and the same is for singing you do not need to eat the microphone or scream making it difficult to understand the words or notes. My first guitar tutor was my uncle, his encouragement was you will be a better guitarist than me. Have not played either the piano or guitar since he died. Though have not given up in picking up where I left off. Great inspirational video, having patience makes all the difference between being an alright teacher and a great teacher.

Lauren, these are fantastic tips! Most of which I follow. I started my guitar playing journey when I turned 50. I just turned 57 and I'm just now starting to feel comfortable with my playing. The thing people need to keep in mind, it's a journey not a destination. Enjoy the learning process and don't be hard on yourself if you can't play something. Overtime, you will get to where you want to be. Although, I'm lucky not to have health issues such as arteritis, I warm up for 10 minute every time I practice by doing various "spider" exercises. Overtime, they make a huge difference. Things my fingers couldn't play a month ago now come so much easier. My speed and finger stretching has improved tremendously by just warming up the fingers before each practice. You are so right about repetition. As boring as it is and as short our attention spans can be sometimes, I've discovered this to be one of the most important things in my practice routine. Our brains and bodies are amazing. Your are absolutely correct when you say anyone at any age can learn to play. The trick is shutting up your inner critic that says you can't. One thing I might add if I may. You touched on it,. Based on my experience, this can't be overstated, take things SUPER SLOW. Like REALLY SLOW. I'm currently learning to play some blues licks. One of the licks has a three finger pull-off using fingers one, three, and four. I literary practiced it everyday by doing each pull-off one finger at a time each one for one beat at a super slow tempo. After a couple of weeks I can almost play it at speed. It can be frustrating, but you are so right. Take it one thing at a time. I may add, don't over practice what you already know how to play, and add something new every few practice sessions. I've been following your channel for a while, it has really helped me with my rhythm and strumming on the acoustic guitar. I know it takes a lot to create videos, so thank you for caring interest and effort to create these great lessons.

Your tutorials , tips and Systems is very helpful and it is not too late for me to catch up and make use of my retiring period & during the Pandemic . Every one of the 7 tips is golden. Thank you Lauren. I wish I had known them earlier (I'm an "intermediate" beginner, I guess, now trying to cross barre chord hurdle). I would just add: play the songs you love. As soon as I learned chords in the key G, I started learning the song, "Country Roads, Take Me Home" (with Fmaj7 version), which I first listened to over short-wave radio from Voice of America, forbidden at the time in China (taking about older learners, lol). I had tears in my eyes the first time I could play through the whole song. That's what keeps me going.

Great lesson. I will be 72 years old and played guitar for about 30 years and stopped for around 20 years and just started playing again about three years ago. I appreciate your positive attitude. Interestingly, even after playing off and of for all these years, I still can't hit an F chord without barring it. Your strumming recommendations are terrific. I really never thought about how important that is. You mentioned you liked the music around my era. I don't know if you ever heard of Moby Grape. They were really good.

Such thoughtful and helpful content. In my late fifties and took 3 years off due to a quiet ordinance in an apt. I was surprised by how much I lost skills. Lost a lot of flow in guitar like strumming and chord changes. Also, dexterity differences. Any tips on chord changes. I am slow with that and especially with Barre chords. I might place 2 finger placements of the positions but not all or miss the proper string etc.... And, I try rotating index finger to Barre but not there yet... Any videos on Barre chords and quicker chord changes and changes that involve barres? Thankyou for this great content, tips and strategies!!! So appreciated. Your passion for teaching and music is so inspiring! 🎸

I started 6 years ago at the young age of 58. The best thing I did was tell myself that I would practice every day, even if for only 10 minutes. I also found that as strange as it sounds my muscle memory would kick in when I wasn't practicing. By that I mean I would practice for 30 minutes or so on a particular chord or picking pattern and struggle. I'd put the guitar down and come back an hour later and as if by magic my fingers knew what to do.

Lauren, I just found you on KZbin. I am an old guy! I love listening to a good guitar player and I know they represent years and years of practice and probably some naturally ability thrown in. Glenn Campbell, Roy Clark and Willie Nelson come to mind. I took piano lessons as a youngster, guitar lessons later in life and played trumpet in high school and church orchestras, but all required one thing…practice! Well I’m 77 years young now…have lots of time on my hands. You are so right about learning slower and memorizing not so quickly as we used to. I am almost convinced taking guitar lessons might be a good thing for an old codger such as myself. Thanks for your great videos.

Definitely an older student here, knocking on the door of 60. I tried learning on an acoustic as a young teen with stubby, fat fingers and couldn't master the frets so I gave up instead of finding a guitar that fit with me. The song that inspired me to try to learn was Chicago's "25 Or 6 to 4" with the incredible (and criminally underrated by the media) Terry Kath on guitar. Now I have the urge to learn again, picking up a Squier Affinity Stratocaster with a gorgeous Sienna Sunburst finish and maple fretboard that lured me in. With HSS pickups and a tremolo bridge, it gives me some flexibility in what I can learn to play. I picked it up from a well-known retailer with their luthier setting up a low action and lighter strings for the music I enjoy (classic Chicago and Steely Dan). I'm going to try your finger exercises (your video "Get FASTER Fingers and Chords In 1 Week With My Guitar Finger Exercise") and give your older learner methods a try. Thank you, Lauren, for giving hope to us older folks!
