As a 66yr old graduate of Lauren’s 7 Level Beginner Guitar System I can now play the guitar. (Woohoo!Thanks Lauren) I followed her practice instructions and put in the work to develop the fundamentals to play. I can now play so many songs. My practice sessions range from a couple of minutes to 3 hours, what ever works. I enjoy playing everyday!

Ya know Lauren, this is one of the best guitar instruction videos I ever saw. I took lessons from a guy at a local music store and the guy really had no structure for me. Once I learned chords, he would ask me, " so what do ya want to do this week?" And we'd just go over another song. At least you're providing structure, a how to become better at the fundamentals. Thank you.

I think that what you do the most is instill confidence in your students. I was subconsciously unconfident without realizing it and hit so many brick walls, then you had the video of the easy chords and that changed it all for me. As long as I could play the easy chords and it be ok, then I was able to follow along better. If a person does not realize they are not confident, they will continue to struggle with the anxiety without even knowing why.

Since 1 week I strongly followed your tips and tricks and believe it or not „ Horse with no name“ with strumming is now my favorite . Your‘re absolutely right focus on being secure in setting the chord correctly and optimize technique will give back shortly your results which emphasize you getting more in. Hi Lauren, I just wanted to throw out an idea, something I've started to work on for myself that really helped me get my chords sounding clean. One of the problems I was having was knowing exactly how hard to press down on the strings. What I started to do was put my fingers on the strings gently at first and strum the same chord over and over, gradually building up pressure with my fretting hand each time until I found that "sweet spot". I've always been a bit of a perfectionist with everything I do and I don't mind taking a little extra time to get things exactly right. I usually devote one practice session a week specifically to this excersise. It helps me to sound better when I play.

Lauren: I'm 59 and in my second week of learning electric guitar. I've started your free 14-day course and the lessons are excellent, but in Lesson 5, there is a D6/9 chord that I assume is easy (it's one of the first chords you introduce), but it's difficult to play without muting strings. I have not seen any info (from *any* KZbin instructor, amazingly enough) about how to deal with a real lack of dexterity when you first start. It seems like everyone assumes that every beginner has enough dexterity to do a spider exercise at the 5th or 7th fret or stretch for C and G chords, and it's nowhere near true. Having the index and ring fingers two frets apart (D minor chord) is really tough and it's very hard to play a clean G chord (even after 2 weeks) because my index finger mutes the D string. I cannot get the index finger high enough (or straight enough) to come down on the A string without severe wrist contortion and pain. Should I keep playing shitty sounding chords (muted strings) and trust the flexibility will come? (I know you say it's okay when switching chords to have them sound like crap at first, which is encouraging!) Or will bad habits start as I contort my wrist (for example) to get my index finger on the B string (C major) without muting the low E? Are there any exercises (away from the guitar) that can help stretch out a left hand's fingers? Thanks so much!!! Allan
@LaurenBateman Жыл бұрын
Yes, keep playing the shitty sounding chords. They will sound like that for a while. Don't let that hold you back. In all, honestly, it's probably going to take 6 months for your cords to work themselves out.

Lauren, you're just such a kind person. Listening to you teach is wonderful. You are absolutely right. Five minutes, when you focus hard - seems like forever. I remember those early days. I kind of miss the 5 minute days. I miss those early struggles. It was so much easier - but I am learning Jazz and that was my goal. For me, learning jazz requires so much practice to master. So many chords to learn. Augmented, dominant, diminished, flat 5, etc. I have so much techniques to just maintain but it's worth it. When you nail down a complex song, it's the most rewarding thing in the world. The first time I played Unforgettable and nailed those chord changes - oh it was awesome :) Oh ya, a jazz guitar teacher - critical :)

I noticed your pinky finger is straight when fretting. When I put pressure on it it leans to the side and doesn't do what I want it to. I was doing the exercise yesterday of our fingers on fret 5 6 7 8 and fret the top string and low string with each finger so what happens is my fingers automatically want to come together like it's hard to space them out even if I go up the frets. My hands are small so it sucks.

Life can be extremely dark, but walking with Jesus along the way is so much better than walking alone. There's no need to try to control everything in you life. The One that created you knows how many hairs are on your head. His plan for you is waaay better than the one you could ever come up with in your mind. He loves you so much that He wants to have a relationship with Him. He doesn't want you to fall into the trap of religion or "spirituality" that is not from Him. Put your faith in His Son Jesus today and be saved from the wrath we all deserve. Jesus is the One that provides us with true peace, love, and guidance in life. He changed my life forever and I'm so grateful for His abundant grace, because I definitely don't deserve His mercy. If you've read it this far, I know that God is calling you. Please put your faith in Christ today. Turn away from the lies of the devil. God bless you!
