Fallout 3 had a pretty weak "Hero's Journey" story, but it did at least do a great job of propelling you into the "unknown". Fallout 4 had a similar setup, but then within the world the vast majority of quests are some of the most mind numbing trash collection quests I've ever played outside of an MMO. Respectfully, fuck Fallout 4
@Meton25262 ай бұрын
It wasn't just a weak story, YOU ARE NOT THE PROTAGONIST. Seriously, the entirety of Fallout 3, you are just following the story's real protagonist, your dad. This is TERRIBLE design for a single player cRPG. I get it in an MMORPG because you're often just one character within a much greater world, so I wouldn't criticize something like World of Warcraft for your character not being the story's protagonist, but for Fallout it's terrible. Fallout 3 would have been better with no story at all, except that the gameplay was also such garbage, that the only thing it had was atmosphere I guess, but that's really only held up as being "Good" by people who did not play the first 2 or 3 fallout games (Fallout Tactics was good for what it was, but wasn't great atmo if you didn't play one of the first two.) "Oblivion with Guns" was the perfect summation of Fallout 3.

@@I-Dcompany The biggest problem with F3 is that it and Oblivion were kind of the point that really hammered in that the golden era of CRPGs was over. It wasn't that they were awful games on their own merits, it's that at their time in history, they were awful compared to what came so shortly before. If F3 had never used the Fallout name, and was just a generic post-apocalypse theme for a shooter with light RPG elements, it would have been a fine if mediocre game. I get that there is a need for simple games that are mostly just sandboxes for casual playing. But Fallout 3 created a set of expectations by using the Fallout name, and in relation to what it needed to be to stand as a Fallout game, as a CRPG, it was an abject failure.

Fallout 4 doesn't strike me as a Fallout game just from it's visual art style. What do I mean by that? Unlike all of the previous games from this franchise (including the first 2D ones), everything is very vibrant and colourful. This goes against the theme of the Fallout itself. Original 2 games were made to look like the '50s retro-futuristic comic book. I just don't see that anywhere in 4. In Fallout 2 the dialogues and writing is the most memorable I've seen in any video game EVER. Characters would throw funny profanities and insults at anyone and everything like it's a tuesday in Switzerland. Just conversing with Metzger the slaver in the Den would earn game the M rating. The friendly ghoul, Harold who's well aware that he's a decomposing cadaver, but still jokes about it (and Bob, the tree on his forehead). Drill Sergeant Dornan from Navarro air base. The patriarch of the Bishop crime family of New Reno, Mr Bishop. Why is Fallout: New Vegas the GOAT in the franchise? It was made by the much of the same people that made original two games (Black Isle, gathered into Obsidian back then). They fully understand what makes Fallout game a Fallout game, unlike Bethesda for whom is just another acquired IP...
@vostyok60302 ай бұрын
Bethesda's Fallouts are more popular mostly because of how super accessible they are. The reduced importance of skills, the fact that the game scales to your level, the fact that there are no real bad or good character builds... Take a lvl 1 New Vegas character with terrible skill and stat choices and stroll straight over to Primm to get immediately filtered. As opposed to Fallout 4 where you get given a minigun and power armour in one of the very first quests. Most new players wouldn't enjoy New Vegas or any of the originals for this reason. Which is Bad For Business 😂 You are right about the art style, though. I've heard Fallout 4 being described as Homeless Jetsons Chic, and oh God, do I see it...
@slicedtopieces2 ай бұрын
FO4's art design was the first thing I noticed watching the trailers and gameplay footage before its release and yeah, my heart sank a bit back then. I just remember thinking something about it was off. Then I heard about the radiant quests, the dialogue wheel, the voiced protagonist, merged levels and perks, (and more) and I kind of knew the game was not for me.
@tonivoul1971Ай бұрын
@vostyok6030 Which is why mods exist to remove the perk system,put back the new vegas and fallout 3 leveling system back, remove the wheel and replace it with dialogue boxes like the older games and change the filter to something more depressing and lifeless and add a quest or two here and there and add more lore friendly guns and you got what fallout should've been.

That’s probably because they changed the architecture of the pre-war world in Fallout 4 In the original fallouts as well as 3 and NV the pre-war cities were filled with artdeco-looking skyscrapers, think NYC in the 40s but 10x more high rises, in Fallout 4 they changed it to more 1950s themed Googie style.

A lot of the problems with Fallout New Vegas was due to the PS3 being so limited by the 2GB of vRAM, so cute had to be made like playing after the ending. And on Pc the steam port is unstable. And some of the anti crash mods you said you need most of then are not recommended by the VNV team.

The new update permanently broke the majority of the mods available and I'll never forgive Bethesda for that. As for downgrading, we shouldn't be forced to do that.

IGN was right about the story of Fallout 3. Sidequests are part of the story. Bethesda designs games for you to tell your story, while Obsidian designed New Vegas to tell their story and have your actions interact with it. This is why your father will comment on your morality and how you handled Megaton; there is an assumption that you are going to do things before you find him. The Boomers is a good example of what i'm saying. If Bethesda made the Boomers, it could have contained the same gameplay, quests and encounters, but instead of going there for a greater purpose to the narrative, they would be there simply for exploration's sake. The level of interaction between quests in New Vegas is really cool, while having a world that exists independently of the player's journey is also cool.

Targeting the limbs is something they took from Fallout 1 and 2, like shooting the legs to keep melee enemies at a distance (make them use all their action points on movement) or shooting the eyes to blind them or the head to knock them out. Or the stats and skill system of F1 and 2... where, for example, Low Intelligence replaces all your dialog options with simple grunts, making most quest acquisition impossible while all of the usual dialog partners proceed to shit on or make fun off you. Makes for a totally different game experience (especially since the abuse lowers the inhibition of the player to shot all of the NPCs -> making that one of the few remaining XP sources) :D

Still always amazes me how people seethe soo much over the legion and are hung up over their slavery/sexist approach. In a wasteland the game takes place in,and as unfortunate as it may seem,a faction that is about “unity through extreme force and discipline” makes sense. And really it’s always silly people get hung up about slavery and sexism in a fictional setting. Let alone one as dark in fallout where it fits the setting. Hey we are just trying to survive and need workers? Well I guess slavery is back. Men are oftentimes naturally stronger than women? Sexism is back too. The fact gaming is SO sanitized and has to treat their player like a toddler(even in M rated games)is insulting. And it’s also taken as a political thing of “oh you’re a backwards Nazi who actually supports this stuff if you portray these dark themes”. Remember how hung up people got over Kojima HEAVILY implying…you know what back in “ground zeroes?” Meanwhile they were also praising David cage and his games…who also had instances of “SA” in his works. As long as it’s used well in a story and not glorified/fetishized,dark themes can be fine and can help flesh out your FICTIONAL world. Sanitizing fiction is peak hilarity.

I didn't get into New Vegas, but I also didn't try it with mods, just vanilla. I'm curious what mods you'd suggest are a must have for New Vegas? For example I was completely turned off by the feel of the combat. You click and you hear the shot, but you don't feel it, there's no recoil, there's no weight to it. I also didn't like how much walking I had to do from A to B where there was nothing going on. Also while Fallout 4's skill tree turns you into a jack of all trades, I felt New Vegas turns you into a jack of all weapons, because there just isn't enough ammo to specialise, not that I found anyway.

Friend of mine asked to leave it here as he doesn't have an account on KZbin. That's his comment: Hello, NH. I stumbled upon your channel many years ago, when I was looking something comprehensible about Destiny 1. Yes, guilty of playing Destiny 2, what a waste it was - first game that took away stuff you actually paid for. There is another reason why it's bad - technically all activities that are not involved with you improving in work-related areas are procrastination. But games that make you feel you wasted your time playing them are worst offenders. And Derpstiny 2 most definitely is one of those games. I was very surprised to learn you like Fallouts. Because I do too. Well, with a caveat - as long they aren't made by Bethesda. English is not my native language, but it was Fallout 1 that moved me to study it beyond school program, so I'm biased in this aspect. And that's why I don't like most things Bethesda has done to the franchise - they don't understand what makes Fallout Fallout, and not just Massive Massachusetts quests for adhesive - I tried to build settlements and that's my impression of the process. Not to mention totally botched 'simulation' of settlements - even if you built one according to rules of fortification, it still will be raided and same NPC kidnapped over and over. To spare my friend, I'll go briefly on several points you (and IGN) mentioned. 1. Back in 2001, I think, there was a game Soldier of Fortune. It had 26 or so human parts ready for dismemberment. And it was encouraging you to do so. SoF2 continued the trend. Brothers in Arms, IIRC, also had "gibs". So no, Fallout 3 is not the first gore enhancer. 2. When it comes to simulating life, Gothic 1 beats all Bethesda's stuff. And it does that while blindfolded, with hands tied, waist-deep in freezing water, in pitch-black darkness, upside down, with fish in its mouth. While Gothic 1 had its issues (especially combat-related), even back when it was released, not by modern standards, game itself was revolutionary in many aspects. Still is, I think. For example, NPCs had not just their daily schedules, they had activity/idle animations for smithing activities, cooking, repairing (yes, there were NPCs hammering something to walls of their huts). It was done long before Skyrim. 3. When it comes to narrative-environmental storytelling, I cannot take low-poly dark-red blobs of something as gore of horrors in Fallout 3/4. Doesn't moves me in a bit (and I don't like horrors:)). Yet when you find certain "memorabilia" or "clutter scenery" in Mad Max - it does. And I don't mean those corpses with open chests, filled with maggots (because they heal you). 4. Colour me weird, but "engine improvements" in F4 remind me those "paint jobs" done on the walls of those blue portable toilets - no matter how pretty they are, they still stink. While yes, it is less awful to play it as something trying to resemble FPS, it still bad. Not to mention weapon designs, ugh. The only thing I do like, is actual feeling of power armour, that makes you a walking tank, rather than some cosplayer of it wearing foamy thing that resembles power armour in F3. Still, power core use rates are hilariously short. And if you try PA with godmode, you'll discover than jump-jet assist jump height is higher and could offer interesting gameplay variety. Yes, I mained titan. ;p 5. FNV managed to touch certain world-building aspects much better, deeper, and on wider scale, despite having short development time. I can go on details for a lo-o-ong time, but two examples - money and weapon. First shows you NCR level of development (as main point of money is to create them protected enough to hamper counterfeit, yet inexpensive enough to issue), second shows you a "rewind" of technology. Lever-action guns not just "cool" (cowboy perk FTW), but reflect levels of technological development and manufacturing capacity. I do think, however, that M4-ish types of weapon are out of place. Especially that polymer looking one (could be an anodized aluminium, though, but I wouldn't want to press me cheek into it during Nevada hot hours. 5. Iron sights. *Grins* Man, Redrix! It wasn't the cleanest ADS picture of all Destiny, yet a lot of people were raving about it:D So that FNV iron sight is Ok, you don't always have to walk ADSing. I mean even IRL M16 has L-shaped flip apertures for short and long distances. Although when it comes to stances, I think Operation Flashpoint (now ArmA) is unbeatable. 6. It was possible to play Fallout 3 without abusing VATS, but it all reversed to stealth archer meme. Yes, "Oblivion with guns" wasn't just slur - "it just works", however aiming using only > < is kinda difficult. Couldn't get rid of feeling there is some "bullet magnetism" *nudge-nudge, wink-wink* 7. As of last official version Fallout New Vegas, PC versions are fine, I had more problems in F4 (starting with resolution glitches, NPCs aggroing while you have certain visor mod, and FPS dropping to single digits). There are few bugs still present, though, but in my last playthrough of FNV I had to use console just twice - once I wedged my courier in some rocks in Primm and couldn't wiggle my way out, in another I was unable to exit West Pump Station, game just crashed, so I had to force-teleport. 8. To one certain Pete (as we both know, there is another Pete but I don't mean that one): if your RAM capacity is worse than that of a goldfish, then maybe just don't touch Fallout and don't play it? There are plenty of games for people who can't read half of air-freshner can worth of text. Yes, I mean, Role-Playing of Fallout 4 is limited to you being either neutrally agreed, aggressively agreed, inquisitively agreed, or sarcastically agreed. Wow, such freedom, much choices. It had it funny moments, but I'd say it is in spite of, rather than thanks to. 9. While isometric, turn-based combat of Fallout 1&2 (plus, to an extent, in Fallout Tactics) may not provide certain capabilities of 3D era titles (like putting your nose right to someone's eyeball, ejected from someone's skull due to your critical hit), overall variety of approaches and solutions (not necessarily combat ones) were laid there, and served as foundation for Fallout 3. If you can tolerate rather plain visuals and do want to experience something similar to Fallout 1&2 - try Underrail. öbviously (bröther, got any frööt lööps?) I can go on and on, but Destiny won't return what was stolen, neither is Bethesda going to stop dancing on the rakes. Regardless, you have nice channel and offer interesting thoughts. That's why I keep watching you, even if I'm not subscribed (or even registered). P.S. Nice beard. ;) End of quote =)

You can't spell ignorant without ign. The review they did on New Vegas doesn't do it justice, I wouldn't say you're a selfish character, you're more of a morally grey character that has the freedom of choice to pick which faction you want, and even then you can still roleplay as a mercenary for that faction and do quests for them for caps, weapons, or ammo. Fallout New Vegas is the best 3D Fallout game. Fallout 4 is a downgrade compared to Fallout 3 and New Vegas, the writing is bad, the exploration is mid to alright at best, and the only good thing is the combat. It's why I rarely replay Fallout 4 at all, the only good DLC is Far Harbor because Emil Pagiluaro didn't work on that DLC.

I know you talked about Fallout 4's sandbox a bit in this video, but I think Fallout 4's sandbox is honestly bad, because once you reach lvl 25-30 the enemies just become bullet sponges and tanky where Spray 'n' Pray is required then as you further lvl up while maybe doing the DLCs then it's the only weapon you'll ever use to deal with bullet sponge enemies because the enemy lvl scaling is garbo in Fallout 4 no matter what difficulty you play on. So the combat just becomes "how many magazines am I gonna dump into this enemy?"

Fallout NV is overwhelmingly just a giant mod for fallout 3, it is to fallout London to fallout 4, only made by official devs. So dismissing fallout 3 as a cheap piece of crap that's not worth even looking at let alone playing for hours and was bad even at the time, which is what a lot of fallout purists I read and see on KZbin seem to think, while praising NV as the only true fallout game since fallout 2, is rather nonsensical and foolish and narrow minded

Fallout three is just underwhelming. I don’t have any formative memories of it.

Fallout New Vegas wouldn't exist without Fallout 3, sure Fallout 3 is not as good as New Vegas, but NV wouldn't exist without Fallout 3 by Bethesda, a lot of fans don't want to admit that.

New Vegas was my first Fallout. I bought it not knowing anything about previous games. I fell in love with the world and exploration, the dialog and choices. It's easily one of my favorite games of all time. Also, I enjoy the content November 🫡 keep it up brother
