My thoughts echo lots of the other comments. The card space is so vast that we all have to create constructs in order to narrow our collecting focus, otherwise it’s completely overwhelming. I think grading is just one and at least recently many people have chosen a gem mint (or high) grade as one of the criteria for their construct. With older vintage cards, it makes the most sense because visual appeal and grade often go hand in hand. Personally, the construct I have created for much of my collection is the litmus test where I ask myself, “would I want the card in any grade?” For lower numbered cards, sometimes I just prefer an 8 or 9 just so I can buy more for the set I’m collecting. In the modern context non-numbered cards like case hits, PSA 10 gives extra juice and chase factor to collectors who value the grading construct. From a long term desirability and value standpoint, I’m not sure the PSA 10 construct will save lots of modern cards from losing value in the future though.

*Everyone IMO wants the "10." If they can afford it? I can't/won't afford the current PSA 10 Jordans. But, as I said before, I found something in 10 that satisfied me - the 1988 Kenner SLU Jordan; I paid $167 about 8 yrs ago; since then it's gone way up. As a side note along with most wanting "the best?" If someone says they don't care if their stuff goes up since they're a true "collector?" IMO, that's most likely disingenuous. We're a competitive animal. Even if not selling. We're always "happy" when our collectibles are going up. 😎 Thanx for the content. 👍

~ 30% after hammer price is the reason I have only purchased one card from Goldin and PWCC. How on Earth could they not have a graduated scale so you do not get absolutely mauled on big cards???

Grading is artificial scarcity. Once you get into truly rare collectibles, grading doesnt matter. If a numerical grade greatly affects its value, its safe to assume that its not a very rare item.

My highest graded cards are a PSA 5 from 1948 and SGC 3.5 from 1933. I don't think I have ever seen a PSA 10, and I can't tell the difference between a PSA 10, PSA 9 and PSA 8 anyway 🤷‍♂️

I will buy a bgs 9.5x4 faster than a psa 10...especially if a psa 10 is "selling" at 2-5x more. The only time i buy a psa 10 is if the price is right or some dummy list a card and dont know what it is worth.

I prefer to buy raw in most cases and on very rare occasion may grade it later. Grading is so subjective I can’t see paying more for somebody else’s opinion of the cards condition.

The problem with sports card grading is that the premiums for psa 10's is an artificial construct. The difference between a 10 and a 9 isn't consistently identifiable, nor are identifiable differences worth the premiums. Most 9's are "as made" as opposed to "circulation" or "handling" accounting for the grade. When manufacturing is the main determinant of grade, premiums are less warranted. All that said, the market is pretty liquid for psa 10's so why not buy them? We're not really investing. It's a hobby. Many would say my previous comment warrants the conclusion that buying the 9 makes more sense. But it doesn't. The 10's are easier to sell, so why not.

Grading is just artificial scarcity, so I agree with most of what you say. However, if you're buying GOATS, it quickly can become an investment, and a decent one at that. I prefer limited edition cards, though, because grading then doesn't matter much. The only reason grading then becomes relevant is to simply slab it authentic.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention how PSA was far more lenient in their early stages of grading, especially with vintage. They grade wayyyy harder now where today’s 6 could’ve been an 8 15 years ago. Also, the new PSA slab has its issues with defects, they’ve even now acknowledged it. And finally, the 87 Jordan brings back great memories. That year was my first pack ever purchased, and I pulled that very card!

This is a great discussion and I’m surprised how many comments just assume the PSA 10 is the better buy. I looked up sone iconic cards over the past 30 years and compared the PSA 9 vs 10 over the past year. It looks like if you are flipping in the short term, the PSA 10 is the better buy. Over the long run, the PSA 9 is the better buy. 2018 Prizm Luka Doncic PSA 9 - Up 16% PSA 10 - Up 22% 2017 Prizm Patrick Mahomes PSA 9 - Up 19% PSA 10 - Up 11% 2018 Topps Chrome Ohtani PSA 9 - Down 17% PSA 10. - Up 26% 2009 Topps Steph Curry PSA 9 - Down 46% PSA 10 - Down 37% 2000 Bowman Chrome Brady PSA 9 - Down 25% PSA 10 - Down 34% 2011 Topps Update Trout PSA 9 - Down 34% PSA 10 - Down 40% 2003 Topps Chrome Lebron PSA 9 - Down 26% PSA 10 - Down 56% 1996 Topps Chrome Kobe PSA 9 - Up 10% PSA 10 - Down 18% 2017 Prizm Jayson Tatum PSA 9 - Up 10% PSA 10 - up 13%

The only biggest issue is that this is all artificial scarcity. You're better off buying limited production cards, rather than focusing on a numerical grade. A truly rare collectible doesn't have a numerical grade dictate it's value. For example, let's say you buy a Griffey insert serial-numbered to just a few-hundred copies; do you truly think a numerical grade will matter with so little in production? Of course not. There's not many to go around. That being said, you can have that card only graded as authentic and it won't matter.

How about cracking and submitting the PSA 10 and getting and getting a PSA 10 again. Lol. That’s the problem with distinguishing between a PSA 9 and 10.

I prefer PSA slabs but as far as 10s go, I wish PSA would either have some type of best of the best of 10. My personal opinion is 9s should be looked at as the standard for having a very nice copy of. PSA gives out to many 10s for them not to have something better than that.

MBA (Mike Baker Authentication) assigns eye-appeal stickers to cards that are aesthetically superb to the assigned grade given by the grading company. PSA themselves dont care about any such nonsense. They make plenty of money just sticking to what they do, and thats creating artifical scarcity for everyone in the hobby.

eBay had a 20 year head start on many other marketplaces, and they still haven't figured out how to stop shilling. It's so unbelievably bad, it's almost as if they encourage it. So don't forget to add in a 20-50% shillers fee when comparing auction houses

"Buyer's Premium" is actually "Seller's Premium," isn't it? Because a buyer will stop his bidding 20% below his max price, since that 20% will be added to the hammer price. The seller only gets the hammer price, at best, and that will be 20% below market, generally speaking.
