Before the cameras start rolling, a filmmaker has to know what they intend to put to picture. Unless, of course, they want to burn tons of money on film stock and crew overtime. But when millions of dollars are on the line, you’d better have your visual ducks in a row. Subscribe: goo.gl/9AGRm
Previsualization is the art of visualizing the movie before shooting the movie. From sketches in the early days, to storyboards, to mocking up sequences with toys… filmmakers have been "pre-visualizing" film for as long as there has been film. Advanced technology has made previs a multi-step, multi-layered art form unto itself.
Today in Film School’D, its an introduction to previs. From Walt Disney’s storyboards to the live performance capture in Avatar. And everything in between. It’s the technology that makes summer blockbusters possible.
What did you think - did you learn something new? Did you get SCHOOL’D? Do you think previs technology has been a boon to the film industry, or do you think films are getting too big for their britches? What other topics would you like to see covered on future episodes of Film School’D?

Welcome to Film School... 'D: where we cover everything film. From what it all means, to who what when where and why things get made... we do it all with some animation and a laissez faire attitude. Because history already happened, so what's the rush?

How would that video line up with EP7? The movie is filled with CGI everywhere just because JJ Abrams says he's using costumes for aliens means the whole movie is using practical effects, the answer is no. He ruined Star Trek and now he ruined Star Wars.

I'm always petrified of sketching a storyboard for no good reason. But this video makes want to attend a sketching class 101 ASAP, like Ridley Scott did.

As a sound fx editor, having some temp vfx to look at can immensely speed up the process for me. There is a huge difference between seeing a (crudely) rendered version of the scene as opposed to a blank screen with something like "VFX - alien spaceship blows up city here." Definitely saves the hassle of trying out some creative sound design, only to find that the visual style or timing doesn't match at all.

Can you do a film schooled about how people accept changes to some fictional characters but not to others. Example is sherloc holmes i can accept that he could fight because hes smart and can figure it out but i cant accept jonny storm being a step brother to sue storm. I think its fascinating how we grow attached to some characters personally and yet others we just enjoy the changes.

I like your content, but your cuts are so oversped, the vid was hard to look at. If you have such gorgeous visuals (as for example ridley scotts storyboards), such interesting things to show (as seeing directors visions juxtaposed to their final product), please allow us time to look.

I'm thinking of getting a cheap version of previz software to use for my short films, but I'm not sure if will add THAT much as opposed to simple storyboarding and there's also a somewhat intensive learning curve or so I hear. Anyone have experience with previz software, and do you think it's much better than storyboarding?
