I've travelled a fair bit over the past couple of years to many places including the US, Canada, the UK, about a dozen European countries and a couple of places in Asia. I always try to tune in to the local news issues as part of a way to learn about the places I visit. Everywhere I go the local issues are cost of living, the housing crisis, immigration and failing health systems. So many of my fellow Australians mistakenly think that these issues are worse in this country than elsewhere. Somehow, I don't think so.

We have visas and made the move to North Brisbane. However after 4 months decided Australia is not for us. This was based purely on the financials - why work for the next 25 years just to afford the 'dream' house knowing we'd be scrimping and saving every cent to make ends meet? Instead we opted to return to (wet, not so sunny) UK and upgrade our home. We can afford to retire earlier, take advantage of tax breaks available to workers now and afford a comfortable lifestyle - not the dream but the next best. This means we can holiday overseas 3 times a year, neet family and friends and work to live NOT living to work. Its not for everyone but at least we explored the option and are wiser for it. No Regrets here.

I came from a family of tradies, bricklayers and carpenters etc, Australia had good tradies pre 90’s, but government changed the system, where they had to get builders licences etc, at a cost and extra learning, for a 50 year old bricklayer who knew their trade inside and out, this was too hard, a lot of the old good tradies couldn’t convert, they would normally take on their sons and train them up with really good skills etc, the building industry has gone to sh@t since then, sub par, poor quality, rogue builders etc. it’s a shame what has happened here in Australia. My brother who was a third generation brickie, with pristine work, got out of the trade and is a FIFO instead, three generations of building knowledge, gone by the wayside, and now they just want to import people to build that do poor quality work. My brother and father told many stories of the poor quality work being performed that they would try to fix, they became disengaged with the building trade.

You will probably be offended by my comment, but as someone who was born here, I can say that around 90% of the immigration here is bogus and simply unnecessary. There was a need for it in the post war period before most of the factories closed down and moved to China. Almost all jobs growth is now unproductive and related to government spending on overpriced programmes like the national disability insurance scheme. The immigration is deliberately set at a high level beyond capacity to build new housing to benefit a selection of corporate interests who have taken over the political system and provide a well paid job post-politics for past politicians (universities, banks, property developers etc). Some things like cars, electronics and air travel have become relatively cheaper, although Australia was overall a much richer country when I was a child.
@NathanSaor1798Ай бұрын
Australia has so much land to build on its only an immigration issue if you continue to constrict supply. In the UK immigration is genuinely an issue housing wise demand side. Now Australia is a democracy so if you want to preserve more of your natural environment then that is fine, but at least be honest... If you dont like immigrants just say it. Wages in Australia are already so high compared to Europe showing that there is lots of room for more labour the issue is supply side not demand. (please keep letting poms in its much worse here just change the policy)

Plumber here desperate to emigrate and looking at applying for a 190 visa with my wife who is a primary teacher and daughter. For my plumbing skills assessments to gain recognition to work in Australia its costing £4k along with visa cost at £4k and my immigration agent fees roughly 2k. This is an outlay without any guarantee to get invited to apply. This also only allows me to work in Australia supervised while I essentially retrain at college for a further year at a further cost of £1200. I love the fact Australia doesn't just accept anyone and is 1 of the reasons as a family we want out of the UK. I do feel though for a country that needs skilled tradesmen to build more homes which are badly needed they are awfully strict and the costs are a lot. I predict the move will cost us minimum £20k and thats before having a place to live furniture etc which by the looks of it isn't going to be easy. I fully back making sure tradesmen are competent but in my opinion the costs are ridiculous and it seems more of a money making scheme rather than trying to bring skilled workers in for the greater good of the country which is build more quality homes efficiently. Love the channel btw it's been soo helpful to me and my family in our research. Thank you

The Plumbers Associations are one of the most powerful industry groups in Australia like Dentists, Pharmacists etc. Even with mutual recognition of core qualifications, the Associations have huge influence over licensing authorities and want to maintain their incomes by limiting supply by imposing additional professional requirements. Having said that as a consumer who has lived on and off in UK and Australia I like it that in Australia you need a license to practice/trade - gives the consumer greater protection. The largest groups of migrants to Australia since 2000 are now from Asia - many of these get skill shortage qualifications in medicine, law, nursing, education etc by studying at Australian Universities - the Govt love this as their very high fees subsidise our Unis. We get a skilled workforce not at our expense. You cannot do this in trades as you can only become a plumber/electrician through being employed as an apprentice which you cannot access unless you are a citizen or permanent resident.

Many homeowners in Sydney know their property value increases when there is a housing shortage so they can afford to complain about new land releases for housing. They don’t want more properties available because it may drop their home value below their purchase price. They focus on the amount of equity they have accrued since they bought. They will need that equity if they sell & upgrade to another property with another mortgage that they will never be able to pay off. Many international students also come from families that can buy accommodation or pay high rents, so they push up the bids at auctions to secure a house or unit. This has happened for decades. Once it was Japanese who overpaid for housing. Now I think it is Chinese buyers. Many Sydneysiders whose families have lived in a suburb for several generations simply cannot get on the property ladder in their locality, nor afford to rent. They have to look to outer suburbs or regional towns. At the same time, we are paying benefits to some immigrants who do not or cannot contribute to Australia. Our citizens need to be the primary focus of taxpayer funds. Good migrants try to fit in and be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
@Lovelifealways162 ай бұрын
One problem is so many overseas investors which should be stopped. In Victoria the state government has added so much tax to rentals that people are selling their investment properties as it not worth having one here. This is starting to have an effect on the amount of rentals available and because of the lack of rentals this is pushing rental payments through the roof. A few of my friends have one rental to fund their retirement. They are not rich, they just don’t want to rely on the government for a pension. Yet the government is making it really hard for them.
@RoadRashSpirit2 ай бұрын
Homes are not pensions. I agree that investment firms are making things worse and I feel some sympathy for people who got conned into thinking property was a good pension. But the reality is at some point wether its now or later, someone is going to have to feel some pain. Young people can't afford homes regardless if mortgaged or rented. To many people owning second homes has had a massive effect on house prices, ultimatley, thats what your freind was hoping for. So the choice is, let the air down now or watch the entire global housing market explode in 5 to 20 years when milions are living rough while a bunch of older folks cling to their properties in despair as their equity plummits. At the end of the day, a home is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, we have already reached the point where young and middle aged folks are accepting low living standards just to have shelter. Sure there are still less expensive areas, but people need to be where jobs are, the next step is cost of living exceeds income and capacity to borrow, after that the bubble bursts. I don't think its fair to push several generations of young famillys into abject poverty so a few generations can enjoy a cosy retirement. Well meant or not, thats the choice (Globally)

Lots of factors, like the UK housing construction is slow and targets are constantly missed. The landlord boom since the early 00s has seen ordinary people with a little extra cash on the hip buying homes for investment saturating the rental market meaning homes to buy are super expensive. Yes, Australia does have high migration of late but it seems largely temporary and student migration which you could argue often share housing. The cost of living has hit the UK in a big way too. Wages have simply not kept up with the average house cost. A house used to be 3:1 your salary, now it’s 8:1. Bonkers. Not to mention like some comments already have, regarding the AirBnB global boom! Ordinary houses becoming hotels pretty much.

Thing about Australias Taxes is they start high at low wages, 19% for people earning just $19500 (plus 10% GST so its actually 29%). But they then cap out low for people earning high wages, 45% at $190k, which means its 45% whether you earn 200,000 or 200 Million! And Capital Gains is half Income Tax, which is then halved again for housing investments.

Re. The narrator was quite correct short term visas chew up 70% of rental. On point. Australian immigration approved more than 200,000 short term visas during the lockdowns and a further 200,000 visas of other catigories. Tradesmen were in lockdown, that's where it all started. It was compounded significantly with the government recklessly opening the flood gates to migration once the borders were opened. What is really interesting is every other Western Government did similar things and in each case the consistency in the disastrous consequences is the same. Given also the uniformity of so many event outcomes in the West since 2020 one can't help think this dystopian nightmare was man made. The great awakening has started.

50% to 80% of investment properties are negative gears because it is costing the owner money to have someone live in their house. No way in hell would i buy a house and rent it out with so many people wrecking houses and every time someone moves out you often need to do a lot of repairs anyway. Just have to look up the repayment costs of borrowing 600 grand or more to cover 80% of the house value and you are paying around $900 a week + home insurance + rates and Maintenace. Add it all together you might as well say $1050 a week to rent it out for $600 or $700 a week. Would you do that without being able to claim the loss of what you need to pay for someone to live in your house? And that money only comes off your taxable income, so you do NOT get it back. The only reason to own an investment property is the speculation it goes up in value over the years and not all do and there are many factors that can wreck it from tenants destroying it to white ants. I have looked online at buying a house and seeing past sale prices of some of them they lost money or had a return of less than 3%. The house live in and bought in 2012 the sale price was 50 grand less in 2007 and they renovated some of the place and put in a 40 grand pool. They lost a heap of money. Since i bought it I have put in an extra 150 grand of renovations. If I sold it id easy cover my money but people would see the sale prices and think it went up in value 200 grand when it would not have.

Hi Ross A lot of misinformation and worst case scenarios in this video. Per capita recession - there is no such thing. The country as a whole is either in recession, or not in recession - but the per capita thing is an artificial construct invented by the media (and political oppositions) to bash the government of the day over the head with. Most broad brush costs in this video seem to relate to expensive inner city areas. You can find much more affordable housing in middle suburban areas where most people live. I have rental property (inherited) in Brisbane rented out at $460 per week - a lot less than the $2,500 per month quoted for Brisbane in this video. The post-Covid spike in immigration includes huge numbers of foreign students that have come flooding back in, and they are not in the housing, or even rental market. A lot live in student accommodation, and they have little impact on the housing market. You can’t have an investment property in your Super unless you have a Self Managed Super Fund, and generally only business people can do that. Negative gearing and the 50% Capital Gains discount are overly generous and could be changed. You could limit the tax deductions for a property to the rental income produced by that property. I think a change is coming to limit negative gearing to only one investment property. It is fair to index the capital appreciation of a property to inflation so the owner doesn’t go backwards. And in the long run that would give owners even more than 50%, but I agree 50% after year one is too much, and that could be cut back. Cheers - Chris (from Brisbane) I’m a long term follower after I discovered your family in hotel quarantine at the Marriott.

This is so frustrating. Once states stopped a commitment to public housing then land and property prices started to inflate. Immediately. Through the roof very quickly Without pause. The fact that public housing is still at the concept stage, incentives for housing as investment rather than essential will be favoured. And immigrants will be targeted. As to be expected of a racist society like Australia's. Migrants, easy game to blame. Property investors. Deflecting blame to migrants.
