How inconsistent is Sonic Forces?

Sonic Forces’s biggest problem is that it feels like a self-insert fan fiction. Original character meant to be you? Check. OC is best buddies with Sonic and ignores the fact Sonic is probably closer to Tails or Knuckles? Check. Other characters are completely useless/helpless so the OC looks better and can save everyone? Check. Mania Sonic shoehorned in to be like Generations, except, because all the focus is on Modern Sonic and OC, Mania Sonic sorta just disappears in the story? Check. Tries to be dark and edgy (the supposed six months of torture and Infinite himself) but can’t actually pull it off (torture completely ignored; Infinite disappears before the end and no one says anything about it)? Check. Lots of continuity errors and conflicting info (Phantom Ruby)? Check. Bottom line: This game’s story is a fan fiction that was clearly written all in one go without looking back to check for consistency, never mind a second draft or more.

I think I might've figured out why Sega is turning most of the Sonic characters into wimps who can't protect themselves. It gives them an excuse to not make the characters playable. Newer fans probably don't know that Tails, and Knuckles are capable of defeating Eggman *Cough* *Cough* Classic Sonic games, and the Adventure games. Heck, even Amy can somewhat fight her own battles (Seen in the first Sonic Adventure, and Sonic Battle) Amy even saved Sonic in Sonic Adventure 2 (When Sonic was trapped in Metal Harbor. I just wish Sega would quit pulling stupid stuff and make a Sonic game that isn't a boarder-line on-rail game.

Yea that's just a stupid decision on their part, as: - Heroes shows Team Chaotix as more capable detectives than what Forces does. - In the Adventure games and Battle, Rouge fought her own battles. - 06 and even Rivals shows Silver as capable enough to fight his own battles separately from Sonic - SHADOW. HAD. HIS OWN GAME. At least they gave Shadow an episode and Silver a cutscene, though imo that doesn't quite cut it. In fact those two feel more like an animation test for Shadow and an effect test for Silver (testing the glowing effect used for his telekinesis).

Even the Tails' Adventures version would've been way better as he carried grenades, and had a T-PUP that actually worked. And best of all, in the Japanese story of that game, Tails had never met Sonic, so he relied solely on himself to defend his home island from invasion.

Ryan Sonic. When you look back at the Final Boss in Mania, Sonic’s Super Form was neutralised. He was hit out of it. This leads us to believe that the Phantom Ruby can easily stop the Chaos Emeralds. Heck, in terms of story, Infinite and Eggman have more knowledge on how to use it. More than the Heavy King and Robotnik. It would be kind of annoying to get the Chaos Emeralds, go Super. Then have your form and hard work ripped away from you.

I'll be honest... Sonic Unleashed was the last good sonic game. That game you can literally feel the amount of love and effort put into the game and it really shows. Chip is by far my most favorite side character in the franchise despite his brief appearance because of that game. Colors and Generations did refine Unleashed's gameplay but it did not have that same level of "love." Sure Generations had love and all but Unleashed was just a stronger game overall in my opinion. Sonic Forces is a slap to the face and I really wish SEGA would try and at return to their philosophy when working on Unleashed.

I feel like this whole game is filled with a ton of assets and ideas that they just never use. They could have used that giant worm for some chase scene. They could have used those trains and stuff in Chemical Plant for some cool platforming segments. They could have used that plot point with the Custom Hero using the Phantom Ruby for something. They could have made Null Space into an actual level. They could have had actual boss fights with every villain that shows up. They could have made you actually fight that army of clones. They could have made that illusion sun an actual threat. Heck they could have done much more with the whole illusion concept. They could have had an actual ending for Infinite. They could have actually developed any of the characters' side stories. But instead, they just decide to scrap any and all unique ideas and concepts and just leave small teases towards them for no reason.

The Phantom Ruby clearly has time an space manipulation power otherwise classic sonic wouldn't be here nor would Eggman be capable of making suck drastic changes to the world (like turning green hill into a desert) in such little time. It's also capable of out putting power strong enough to damage Super Sonic _without_ a power source. So I don't understand why they pretend that's it's only ability is to create real illusions. The "real illusions" thing makes sense. You saw that at the end of the game classic Sonic just disappears, and also in Sonic Mania you can see the image effect thing. It is like if it was "unlimited", infinite illusions for an infinite amount of time at the cost of a power source. They destroyed two power sources in Forces, the last boss had its own power source. So it is "real illusion", classic Sonic disappears without the power source. Obviously this means the desert would disappear in the end of the game. So the story makes a little of sense, not so dumb.

The Phantom Ruby was able to knock the Super out of Super Sonic, tear a whole through time and space. This could've been a great plot device for the game. Main problem with this game while it looks like a clone of Generations and colours (even ripping out the boss again, Lost World had it too ) None of the teams who worked on those two games worked on Forces making that trailer (Brought by the same people behind Colours and Generations ) a load of BS. alot people who did work on this haven't even done a Sonic game before, and even the hedgehog engine 2 seems like a modified version of the Lost World engine.

How Sonic Forces could have been perfect: -Have Sonic taken out of the story towards the beginning as usual, but don't have him come back until the very end. -Scrap both Classic, and the custom character. -Bring back the Heroes system where you switch between a team of 3 characters. -Have the characters be various members of the resistance (Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, Espio, Rouge, Omega, Charmie, Hector, Blaze, and Sonic in the end / post game). -Give each character a unique wisp-like ability that helps them overcome certain obstacles and gain advantages in combat (Tails being able to fly, Knuckles having a punch attack, Silver being able to float temporarily, etc). -Make the game fully 3D with cleaner Adventure style physics, and boost gameplay. -Improve the level design, making it more open with more alternate routes, more creative locals, and time that clocks in at least longer than two minutes (probably closer to 5 to 10). -Improve the role of the villains. Each should have two boss fights: One early on in their base forms, and one later on in their ultimate forms. And they should be more complicated than hitting rocks or running in a straight line. -When they say Sonic is being tortured, actually have it seem that way. Keep him upbeat for a little while, but still a little roughed up in appearance and tone of voice. And later on in the story, he should just be completely broken until he escapes. -Infinite should be a much more significant villain. For one, his ability to warp reality and create dimensions could have been used in a far more interesting way in terms of boss fights and story. And he definitely should have had a more complex backstory, and some kind of role in the final boss. -The cutscene quality and general visuals and presentation could have been slightly better. -Boosting shouldn't have been refilled by enemies. Instead, they could have used the blue orbs from Sonic Mania. They take up less space and probably allow for slightly better level design. -Enemies should have been much more diverse. Perhaps an actual threat at least. Enemies that chase you down, enemies that target shots, enemies that take a few more hits to beat, enemies that act as larger obstacles, etc. And that's all I can really think of.

It's really sad when you look at all the 3D games and then you look at this. Say what you will about the past 3D games, even if you hate them, it at least felt like they were trying. SA felt like they were really trying to do something new, bringing Sonic fully into 3D. SA2 felt like picking the best of SA and improving it. Heroes felt like they were trying something new, collapsing SA1 and SA2's variety into one. Shadow felt like they were trying a more action-oriented game with poor results, maybe because of the engine. Sonic 06 felt like a true big leap forward for the 3D Sonic games that was met with poor, rushed, development Unleashed, like you said, trying something new, basically expanding the Mach Speed levels of Sonic 06 Secret Rings and Black Knight was trying something new with the Wiimote Colours took what was good about Unleashed and trying to make it better Generations just a celebration of the franchise Lost Worlds felt like they were trying out what Mario Galaxy did but with a Sonic twist... It's something Boom was basically Heroes but with all of 06's problems Compared to all that, you can see a lot of effort went into the past games even if some (or most, depending on your preferences, I enjoyed a little more than half) were bad or terrible, they tried and you can see the effort. Forces really from top to bottom felt like a cash-grab. Taking the bare minimum of what was great of Colours onwards and adding little else, which is sad because it was marketed as more, and after good that was Mania just paints the Sonic developers in a poor light. The story felt like it was originally meant to be more, but then they gave up after the first draft of the script.

I really think Infinite should've had a backstory that had more effort put into it, instead of coming up with edgy lyrics to his theme song. Maybe Infinite was at one point a friend to the Rookie. Then a desire for power and notoriety caused him to fall in with Eggman and to start up the Jackal Squad. We see him get the shit beaten out of him by Shadow. Eggman decides to turn him into a robot and put in a Phantom Ruby prototype into him and Infinite loses his mind and memories of his past life and being forced to fight Rookie, and because of his protocols that Eggman installed into him, he wants to vanquish Sonic and put an end to the Resistance. After the three battles with Sonic and Rookie, Infinite starts to remember that he and Rookie used to be friends and momentarily gets back to his senses. And his last words before fading away says: "Goodbye..... friend..." That would be a hundred times better than what we initially got.

Forces is truly an absolute disaster of a game that manages to not only contradict its own tie-in game (Mania) in terms of the Phantom Ruby's properties, but also become an entirely confused and poorly written mess as a whole. That's not even getting into how Sonic Team ruined Classic Sonic's gameplay so badly to the point where he can't gain enough momentum to get past a simple incline when running. His physics are so off and he controls like a tank. Modern Sonic's gameplay isn't any better either since his acceleration is messed up whereas he goes from 0 to 100 rather quick which makes platforming with him a major disaster. He still controls like a race car (just without the drift) so the platforming sections in his levels make the issue even worse. Without the drift, modern Sonic is terribly bland and boring to play. The custom character system happens to be the best thing about this game, yet the custom character still ends up not controlling real well because of again, crappy physics and terrible controls which don't work right with the level design. All of the characters suffer from terrible physics which don't work with platforming and this is supposed to be a "platformer". Sonic Team clearly did not try hard at all with Forces. They fucked up miserably with this terrible excuse of a platformer. This is the worst Sonic game I've ever seen and played. Sonic Team needs to step up their game next time.

The best part of this entire game was seeing Knuckles not being treated like an idiot. Also, I found it funny that near the end of the cutscene in the game, Sonic says some speech to get everyone to work together to clean up Eggman's mess, only to find Sonic and the OC run off in two different directions. It's like this. Me: Hey everyone! Lets clean CITY HALL! Everyone: YEAH!!!!!!! *I then hope in my car and drive off.

nah he is still a complete idiot, he is no boom knucks (mind you your average kitchen sponge has more IQ then Boom knuckles) as he manged to get 80% of the ENTIRE RESISTANCE KILLED in operation Big Wave in Metropolis. Do you realize how ridiculously durable Sonic's body would have to be to endure the forces generated by the high speeds he runs at? On top of that, his quills are hard and sharp enough to easily slice through the advanced alloys that comprise the Eggman's robots. Finally, it's been established that Sonic and Shadow's abilities are nearly on par with one another so if Shadow can survive a fall from orbit Sonic should be able to as well.
