I'm an INFP with an ISTP sister. It's the funnest and most ridiculous relationship. I don't think we would have understood each other if we didn't grow up together. But she is the person that i have random road trips with and do irresponsible things with. We're both so free and independent together. I know not to expect a deep conversation from her and she knows that I'm a bit moody. It's the greatest though. Also, being in a relationship with INFJ male is perfect for me too. He is so harmonious while I tend to be a rebel. We both value the authenticity and closeness of the relationship but there's a little bit of spice because of our differences. As an ISTP, I think this video sums up pretty well my seemingly lifelong attraction to and struggles with the INFP type. I had to learn how to maintain and enforce strong emotional boundaries with them precisely because we have so much amazing chemistry and mutual respect. We feel drawn to each other, but because we're both extremely individualistic, we can't really influence each other very much, and this can make compromise a sticking point and source of conflict. More often, I end up feeling as though I am doing all the compromise, while the INFP feels that I'm not doing enough. We're pretty much forced to set boundaries at the outset, and for unhealthy or immature INFPs, this completely undermines their desire to feel emotionally close. It's not called a "growth pairing" for nothing.

This is an eternal dilemma when both parties in a relationship are highly independent. In theory, a relationship is something in which both people need to compromise in order to make that relationship a more powerful entity. However, maybe that doesn't always need to be the case. I think the type overlap you describe with INFP / INTJ authors is because a lot of the time INTJs can be INFPs when they let their guard down eg crying over fictional characters more than people in real life. I think INTJs have a very sweet and vulnerable soft spot for sensitive things and maybe that's why there's ambiguity in what their actual type preference is.

I’ve actually got the pet theory that CS Lewis may actually be INFP. Yes, he wrote books with a lot of logic and philosophy but when we have a purpose and belief in what we are doing, INFPs can easily play that game too. Plus as an INFP (amateur) writer I’ve also been mistyped by people who only saw my writing online as an INTJ myself, because they’re seeing the edited and coherent final product and not the dose of weird and the inconsistent impulse to work that went into it, or the raging emotions that I caught and filtered out before putting it in writing for the world to see.

It took a long time for me and my ESTP brother to learn to understand each other properly. I misinterpreted his sense of humor as bullying and disrespect while, in his mind, he was treating me the way he treats his closest friends. He always struggled to understand why I would cry so easily or why I would stay mad at him for days while I genuinely thought he hated me and, since I was pretty convinced he also had mind reading powers, there's no way he could see through me that thoroughly and not understand why I was upset. It was only after our narcissist sister finally revealed her true, unfiltered insanity that we both took a step back and reevaluated our opinions on everyone in our lives. My brother finally realized that my ongoing conflict with our sister was not just girls being girls, but genuine emotional abuse that made me ultra sensitive to every little slight or criticism that was directed at me and teasing me the way he did had had the opposite affect he'd been wanting. I also realized that I had taken too much negativity to heart over the years and saw every single moderate to low opinion of me as a challenge to do better or risk losing everyone I ever knew and loved, missing the important fact that not everyone is like my bullies, my sister, or my boss. My brother can be a butthead but he's always had my back when it really mattered. He kept trying to connect with me long after I'd given up due to my own insecurities. He's since learned to mellow out around me a bit so I know any jokes he makes are unintentionally malicious and I've gotten some therapy and a thicker skin so I can meet him somewhere in the middle. We talk a lot more now. I've actually come to seriously admire him not just because of the mind reading thing, but also because he is genuinely funny and can learn complex mechanics just by watching youtube videos. And he somehow thinks I'm the smart one just because I read a lot of books. Being able to read for long periods of time and overthinking everything doesn't make me smart. I wonder if this is why we both admire our younger brother (ISTP) so much since he's the perfect blend of both of us in one glorious stoic package.

ISFJ with INFP bestie here. I think we don't find them particularly "weird" but more like child-like, so our parenting alarms go crazy. I think we have pretty much a Frodo and Sam dynamic. But I must admit, my bestie's train of thought confuses me sometimes because she forms some thoughts in her head but when she says them out loud, even she can't make any sense of them. INFP here. for starters, well, you said it yourself, we're child-like, & being child-like when you're a grown-up, or just being close to being a grown-up, is what most in the world would see to be weird, to some types, even unthinkable. it's also no surprise that your friend's train of thought confuses you. we INFPs often confuse even ourselves, like thoughts just click into place at some random moment, yet half of the time, such thoughts would be so fragile that it's like trying to pick up tofu (the soft squishy types, not the hardened ones) with chopsticks when we try to express it. we poke at it & it just falls apart. personally, i see that to be one of the reasons why a huge number of INFPs tend to be writers. we just ain't half as good at expressing ourselves through spoken words, & writing allows us to solidify those thoughts before actually expressing them at least. if i were to tell you all that i've written here verbally, it wouldn't have come out half as fluid as i'd like it to be.

As an INFP, I found many of the things in this video curiously accurate. Here are some of my personal experiences: My dad is an ISTJ and your description is spot on. Sometimes I can suprise him with a new perspective, which he hasn't thought of before and I occasionally get impressed by his ability to recall detailed information and experiences or implement very practical plans. My mom is an ENTJ, I her ability to focus on a single task or goal for hours on end is beyond me. On the other hand, she doesn't get how I manage to neglect chores or live in an unorganized environment. My best friend who I love beyond comprehension is an ENFJ. Although I cannot possibly understand how she manages to see good in every single person, I admire her ability to stay positive, yet also organized, energetic and active in social situations. My sister, who is an ISFJ, is literally as slow as me when it comes to everyday tasks, we both like to take our time and also need that occasional recharge of social battery. I sometimes when we're wathing series notice how she's got that Si-Fe vibe of "That's not acceptable/that's against the rules/that's against social expecations.", whereas I am just saying "I don't really care if it's societally whatever, as long as it aligns with my values". I also have an ISTP friend who literally told me once: "You should not make all your decisions based on emotion. Sometimes we gotta do things we don't like for the sake of it.", which is basically his whole mindset. We do like each other's company and honestly sometimes I whish to have some of his aloofness. We often relate to things like motivation (my desire for and his immense amount of) and a desire for an individualistic lifestyle. I also know an INTJ to whom I can relate to pretty well when it comes to Fi things like worldview, values etc., although once again, he's often the one to tell me to get my shit together through that Ni+Te energy. There are a million other experiences as well, but... EDIT: typo fixes.

The ENTJ part really resonated with me because I have a friend who seems to always be on top of everything (Te) and all of the sudden they are like "I don't really know what I want to do with this person" and that's such a weird thing to hear for an INFP. Like "what do you mean you don't know how you feel? It's the easiest part!". It really shows how we see things through our own lenses and what is natural to us might not be to others and vice versa. It's obvious but we often forget it.

I used to be friends with an ISFP and I think our respective approaches to confrontation really showed our function differences. When I see a situation that bothers me, I don't jump into confronting the people involved or trying to change it, and instead mull it over and think of alternate points of view on the situation, to see if one of them might seem more pleasant to me. They, on the other hand, would always face it head on, jump into the action and say exactly what bothers them. In some ways I found them admirable, but also in some ways stupid. I'm sure they would've had a similar dichotomy about me, either seeing me as respectful or in a constant state of Copium. -INFP

Another thing is that our skill sets overlap great though we go about the same things differently. for example, we both are fans of linguistics, but it's apparent how I see things as a part of a grand mainframe that connects everything together, while he is more inclined to understand concepts individually.

I can get on with any type but I have had the most negative experiences with ESFJ's, INFJ's and ENFJ's, I often feel they try to control me or try and get me to do things which I don't want to do, I feel the most misunderstood by them. I admire the ENTP/ENTJ the most their intuitive plus logical nature is my favourite and we tend to get each other the most. Depending on the INFP I also tend to get on with other INFP's the best. Openmindess, good boundaries and a loving nature.

That's interesting since those three types are all high Fe types. It makes sense that you'd feel like they're trying to control you in certain ways, especially in the social realm ~ Nathan
@missanythingfunny Жыл бұрын
@@lovewho I would actually say interacting with those types in the social realm I don't feel forced at all. I'm quite stern when it comes to declining social interaction or social invitations if I don't want it. Also, I'm socially adaptable (can fake it to a certain degree). I'm either reserved and observant feeling quite comfortable or I can choose to assimilate depending on the situation/my mood. I can actually use my charisma quite easily if I feel the need to blend in. The way I feel forced by those types is in situations when they feel the need to try and help me, when I don't need help or think they know what's best for me/ try and take control of a situation. It's the 'my way is the best way, do it my way instead of yours' which I don't like. No matter how much I explain this to some ESFJ & ENFJ (I've known a few of each) they seem not to understand this point of view. Would be interesting to know why my individuality is challenging for them to comprehend at times. That's my biggest pet peeve. I have an ENFJ Mother and I love her dearly, so this no way hate to those types. Just something I've picked up on

Uhm, as an ISTJ, I have once an online INFP friend, a cousin INFP and a favorite British actor INFP (how any British actor is usually INFP??? 😂). I did interact with the online INFP friend in the past, just found out INFP cousin through test, and watch interviews of British INFP actors .... They strike/surprise/scare me with their Ne, like how the hell they always share/react many ideas in a day, at a time?? And the way the understand, synthesize ideas, stories, of course more fluid that i would find hard to catch up and fascinating. And through interaction with the 2 INFP - online friend and cousin, they said they're in LGBT+ terms - which is not a thing I expect, but well, understandable (kinda a common thing to INFP??). INFP are often nicknamed as "snowflakes", but they're not. They have Si Te and practice that and sometimes they're unwavering with their beliefs as well, as i hardly don't want to mess with 😅
@lc1138 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing ! And it's quite an interesting question about LGBT+ tendencies for INFPs. As an INFP, and bi-something myself, I wouldn't be surprised my typemates would be more often this way, given the "no-barrier" approach to life and the universe I figure we share. At least I guess INFPs would be more keen to live that way if they feel so. But I don't have a clue about it and it's just a conjecture. I'd be glad to learn about it.

I've been looking forward to this video! I think it's pretty funny the way you describe ESTJ and INFP relationship because of how accurate yet different it is to my experience with one. My dad is an ESTJ and you were spot on in the things we have in common. I think we both have a strong sense and understanding of what duty, responsibility, and passion for what we want is. But it presents itself in very different ways. My dad basically tries to answer the "hows" whilst I indulge in the "whys" I think is the best way to put it. Obviously there is overlap but they are still our respective strengths. Usually conflict arises when he does try to push me to be "quicker" in my way of achieving my goals... which is a big way to tick me of. BUT i appreciate its a fair criticism given my passivity when I need to be active. Also sometimes I dislike how he doesn't take the time to indulge in important questions and moments which, in my opinion, could help him, instead dismissing them.

My mom is an ESTJ and while sometimes we butt heads, sometimes we also just VIBE in a way I don’t always with my ENTJ dad. Have you found too that sometimes the ESTJ sense of humor can come out without warning and catch you off guard with how surprisingly wacky and Ne it can be? In describing my mom I’ve called it the equivalent of sticking her foot out in the aisle and tripping you when you aren’t looking. But with humor. 😂 She also sometimes makes jumps from topic to topic in conversation that throw my ENTJ dad for a loop but I get exactly how she got from point A to Point Ne. It’s not as blatant as the weird stuff I do but I think I bring out the goofy in her. 😂 -INFP (Note: She is an EXTREMELY well rounded and balanced ESTJ that seems to have all four of her functions honed and ready to go. Yup, you nail it. I can only talk for myself and for my perception of people I know to match certain types, but your words match my experience very well. However, as someone who gets INFP-typed about all the time, and identify myself well with it, I feel more like my super-sayen version would be ENFP (when I take my own life in hands) rather than ENFJ (which is more when I have to work in a mediative way with people. I feel like I'm quite good at it, so it is rewarding, but this is clearly NOT what I want to do/be/be dragged to do all the time, "gimme space and please fare well on your own, please".) Btw, I've always felt like I was a mix of my two parents, who happen to type as ENFP (mother) and ISFP (father). I obviously took a big bunch from each other, which oftentimes gets contradictory. I wonder if some fellow INFPs are in the same case, and how your own parental environment can impact yoir personnality type. (I would be immensely intersted on seeing mbti studies comparing children and parents)

Makes total sense to me. Entering ENFP mode would involve you shuffling your functions around only a bit. That means you'd be able to inhabit that way of being for longer periods if you ever wanted/needed to. ENFP and ISFP parents with an INFP child. I have a very close ENFP friend and this was dead accurate. Often I've come to the conclusion that both INFPs and ENFPs do a impressive amount of exploration in finding who they want to be, sometimes going around in circles and getting lost in the process. The difference being that INFPs do this wandering internally, in their own mind and in their safe spaces because that's how they're used to making decisions on pretty much everything. ENFPs do this externally, doing new things in new ways, new places and environments as that's what stimulates them and they believe you can't know if you don't experience. In reality, the INFP appears stagnant and unchanging, whilst the ENFP looks erratic and unfocused. INFPs are stuck in limbo and ENFPs are lost in the woods.

You're right to be skeptical of it. Ultimately, people are too complex to be captured by any descriptions of these kinds. However, it is natural to want to classify people - it's useful too.
