14:55 I like the juxtaposition of the scrybes, personally. Leshy as life, Grimora as death, P03 as the scientific, and Magnificus as the fantastical. Intentional or not, I think it's a really cool detail.
@EMLtheViewerАй бұрын
That’s a great observation. I didn’t notice that!
@xdragoonzero0Ай бұрын
This is also why Leshy uses Grimora's bone mechanic in Act 1, as life and death are obviously connected.
@EMLtheViewerАй бұрын
@@xdragoonzero0 And in Act 3, P03 uses Magnificus’ gems mechanic (though heavily modified). Bit of a neat parallel.
@emeraldnickel19 күн бұрын
It’s definitely intentional. They’re also opposed in different groupings in the game components they represent - Grimora’s substance-centric story opposes Magnificus’s style-centric… well, style, and P03’s backend-focused mechanics opposes Leshy’s frontend-focused storytelling. Interestingly, this means that the aesthetic oppositions combine both in game components and card mechanics, as you get blood and bones in Act I and energy and mox in Act III.

I’ve made this comment before on a different video on Inscryption, but my favorite part of Inscryption actually is behind the theming behind the scrybes, beyond just the obvious ones. The scrybes can be described in terms of game design. Leshy is the story and the atmosphere. He’s the most fleshed out of the scrybes and gets the most time, because to an indie developer, he’s the most important for the player and the most memorable. Without the story the game is bare and empty, so he’s there to fill the gaps with his words and storytelling. P03 is the gameplay and balance. He’s the second most important, because he’s what makes a game “fun”, hence his focus on the technical. That’s why he get’s the second most focus, being a game developer’s second priority after launch. Grimora is the save states and internal code. She’s the one who preserves the save file, which is also why she’s the first to let it go, because there is just as much value in ending a life as there is in starting a new one (also note how she’s a “bug” in leshy’s game. Maybe a hint to the game state being “bugged”?) Magnificus is creativity, and the unfinished. He’s the culmination of every new idea that comes to being, but is never certain how they finish. This is why he fears the future yet is able to see it, and also why he’s the only one whose game never comes to fruition, his world empty in the last act. As sad as I am we didn’t get multiple games on Inscryption or every Scrybe’s “world”, the game is beautifully designed as it is now :D
@FluffyBooster28 күн бұрын
I always imagined Grimoira as the one who tells the story honestly Leshy is fantastic at atmosphere and player experience of course, but he’d refuse to ever end the story in a satisfying way if he had the choice. He wants to keep playing, keep the game going for as long as possible. You’d be trapped with him forever. P03 loves mechanics for the sake of mechanics. He’s an ideas guy and always coming up with something new he wants to try out, but it’s all fluff. Nothing flows as easily, it can be overwhelming all at once, and it’s no better mechanically balanced than Leshy. Magnificus in my opinion is all about the presentation. The graphics and flair. He wants you to be stunned by his work. When you play with him it’s supposed to be a glorious battle, but you’ll quickly realize beyond the visuals everything else is quite shallow. Then I’d say Grimoira rather than Leshy is the true story teller. Her minions all have backstories to tell, she wants to tell you more, but she also knows when everything needs to be finished and accepts that. Her games would probably be the best balanced, but just rather simple is the thing. Barebones even. She needs the others to come up with the ideas they specialize in first before she can adjust from there.
@elijahpark534428 күн бұрын
@ I guess, kinda, though I see her more as the lorekeeper, something that comes with being also the memory keeper. She is the one who keeps track of the little details, the easter eggs and the notes that are hidden in files that the player would need to dig deeper for. In a sense she’s the extension of the story, the words that people find if they take a little bit extra effort to look for it. Leshy on the other hand is the direct storyteller, as he’s the one who describes the impact of a player’s impacts in a world. Him being able to create npcs and characters is what contributes to that idea. He makes the story alive, by adding the voices, the actions, the consequences. In that way he represents the present, the story now versus the story in past that Grimora tells.

While it would be nice to have that, the fact that we only got tiny little segments with the other two scrybes made the ending all the more tragic. It sells the weight of the game’s deletion. We could have had more time together, but what lives on this disk is too dangerous to remain accessible to those who would exploit it. Everything has to go. You could even say… sacrifices must be made. Of course that turned out to be a foolish mistake on the part of Grimora. But it seems that, of the characters in Inscryption, only the Woodcarver understood that OLD_DATA would not allow itself to be deleted.

I've definitely mentioned this before but the way your video style visually changes for each game is astounding. Your skills are clearly getting more and more professional too -- so exciting to think what you'll do in the future! Also, thank you for these! I feel like people can so easily complain and yell about game devs because they're this imaginary force-- and aside from teaching us awesome game history, I feel that you really humanise the people behind the games we cherish and give people faces and names to be thankful to.

Oh man, thank you so much for those amazing words! I always try to put the devs front and center and tell the story from their perspective so I'm glad that shows. @erikm8373Ай бұрын
Sometimes I almost feel like it would've been more thematic if PO3's Inscryption was the rouguelike, and Leshy's was the open world adventure. Leshy handcrafts this big world, full of unique characters and encounters, while Po3 relies on random generation. He doesn't trust the player to actually be good enough to win with their own skill, so he designs a game where all you need is one lucky run to finally get to the end. Obviously a few other aspects of the game would have to be redesigned and shifted around, but I think it's an interesting idea.
@ukkisragee99833 күн бұрын
But also I feel like the way it is in the game fits more for their ultimate goals. Leshy's goal is the fun of the game, the ending doesn't matter as much as the journey to get there, while PO3's goal has the journey be irrelevant as long as the key points are met. Leshy wants to spend time with you, PO3 doesn't. And ultimately a roguelike is something with far more replayability than an adventure game.

Honestly, by this point I've learned to expect very few things from Daniel Mullins games. Some recurring themes like he said, as well as the continuation of the connected Mullinsverse, but otherwise? I expect nothing but to see something I couldn't have expected. The major differences between Pony Island, The Hex, and then Inscryption always threw me for a loop and it's one of the things I love about his projects so much. Whatever Pony Island 2 ends up being, I'm excited for it because I trust Daniel Mullins to craft an experience that I could only get from Daniel Mullins. And the funny, bright side of it at the end? If he ends up doing something more generic, or retreads ground or anything with Panda Circus... well I guess that'd end up its own unexpected result too, wouldn't it?

I have never encountered a game which utterly enthralls me like Inscryption does. I have always thought of the world through the lense of a forest, growing up in the Appalachian mountains of coal county Kentucky, I have always understood nature in a frightening and intimate way. So to me, this game feels as though you control an ecosystem. Each card you play in each scenario can be seen as a unique metaphor. The squirrel is given to the little wolf pup, as it creeps along the field guarded by Stones and dead stumps, in time it shall grow to be a savage beast while the cuckoo bird pushes the raven's egg to the forest floor, a distraction mad for the growing beast. And the best part is, everyone can see themselves in a scrybe, everyone can find what ideology they identify with and it makes fighting your preferred scrybe like a sit down with an old friend to talk philosophy. Every time I boot up Inscryption, I see leshy as both a friend and a mentor, he is there to show me the errors of my hubris, and reward me for my critical thinking, and each time I leave the game I have a new interpretation of the world I didn't have before.

Tbh I feel like popular devs should be excluded from rankings in major game jams (especially if they don’t go under an alias and don’t reveal their involvement until after the jam). I do believe that his games are great and they’d still be ranked highly if people didn’t know about the dev, but I also think there’s a massive wave of people who would have flocked to, played, and rated his games simply because of that, as many of his entries get FAR more ratings in the jam than the average entry, and when they’re all very high, it also skews it a bit. I participated in LD50 and our game was extremely well-placed, getting somewhere in the top 50 in one category and top 150 overall, but so believe BitBuddy took second or something overall. It was a great game, and it used the concept of delaying the inevitable well (we used it similarly, as a narrative device instead of a mechanical one, but his was definitely executed better). It still would have been nice to know that if our game WAS of higher quality than the few little issues we had, that we’d still stand a chance at top spots without competing with the popular giants.

idk if you talk about this in the rest of the video, but with the announcement of pony island two, the trilogy might not be as dead as you think
