It’s such a beautiful song. How can anyone not love a man that was so talented, humorous and humble?

This was requested by Mickey Mantle, former New York Yankee star, to be sung by Roy at his funeral. Roy sang it when Mickey Mantle died and it was beautiful.

Correct. People who look it up for video may find Roy singing Amazing Grace at the memorial service, but the funeral service was private. Mickey had thought that Yesterday When I Was Young might have been played on tape, but Roy made the service and sang it live.

You really Should if you can find an earlier live version or the Original Studio Recording. Roy Deserves to be heard singing this as Younger Man. So Glad you found This Man ..... What a Treasure he was ..... R.I.P

Both have their own quirks. I definitely prefer young Roy singing, but I have to admit the older version with his weathered voice has a newer charm to it.

I agree he’s better vocally when younger, however this song is about an older person looking back on their youth, so this version is better (imo) because of its poignancy.

How does one find “the live version of a studio recording?” You can listen to the studio recording, or you can listen to a live version/recording, but not a live version of a studio recording.

It isn't about what he misses about childhood, it is about regret for the way he lived his whole life. LISTEN to the words.

I agree that studio version is " more pleasing" to the ear but this version, to me, portrays more the emotions of an older person remembering with regret his waisted youth. More feeling to it.

I agree with everyone that he has many better sung versions out there. He is a much older man here. It still rips out my heart though much like Johnny Cash singing Hurt when his voice was very old and broken. It brings a different flavor, because you can hear the older age of a man who understands the words of the song in a new way. It’s not just his childhood, of course, but of all the wasted years of our life. 💔 But even if you don’t share the older versions of this song, do yourself a favor and listen to his recorded version. There are a ton of videos of it. Thank you for listening to this man though. Musicians have loved him for generations, and deserves to be recognized by younger people.

Another aspect of Roy’s guitar mastery is that he’s basically playing a clean tone. He’s not hiding behind pedals and distortion and other effects. It sounds like he’s directly plugged into his amp. There’s nothing there to cover his mistakes.... if he ever made any.

So, this would be a good time to take a sideways step in country style music, and discover a fellow named Tom T. Hall. A song that can be found under the title Watermelon Wine, or the title Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine, is world class, as is a song called The Year that Clayton Delaney Died. Tom T. was also a first class storyteller, with a troubadour's sense for engaging his audience in musical conversation. Roy Clark's portfolio of interesting performances is deep enough and wide enough to let you keep coming back to it for years, so how about discovering this other branch off of that trunk of the music tree?

It was great seeing your reaction to this song. It reminded me of when I was a small child and heard it on the radio for the first time. The gravity of the lyrics combined with the wistful guitar just draws you in. It helped me make my mind up, even back then, to try and be authentic in my life and to treat others with consideration and value their gifts as well. Thanks again!

As a Black woman, now age 60, l remember hearing this beautiful song as a child playing on the floor with my toys, while Roy Clark sang this song on his Country music show, "Hee Haw". He's NOT singing about missing his childhood. He's singing about regrets and missed opportunities during his life while running after what would NEVER make him happy. Now, it's too late, as he can't turn back the clock, no more than any of us. Go back and find one KZbin vid of the original. Really LISTEN to those lyrics. Everyone has tried to copy Roy's original, but no cigar! Please check out Mr. Charlie Pride and Mr. Charlie Rich, as singers and writers of classic Country. I love all types of music! I look forward to checking out your upcoming videos. Take care.

Roy Clark was like an uncle to me during my childhood. He and my mother Patty Rainwater and my uncle Marvin and Rainwater all sang together on the Jimmy Dean show in the 50s. He and my uncle Marvin started a band together in Georgetown in 1955. He was a wonderful man and I had the opportunity to visit with him one last time when he played in a town close to me about 10 years ago. Just for shits and giggles you should check out my uncle Marvin Rainwater on KZbin. His biggest hits was “gonna find me a bluebird“. Oh, Roy Clark also had a another original song. Thank God and greyhound you’re gone“.

Oh the wasted years of our youth, thinking that we can get away with nearly anything with no consequences. Then as we look back with regret from our later years, we can see so clearly how much better we could have lived out our youth. This is both a beautiful and tragic song. Let’s take a cue from Roy make better choices for ourselves and for those we know starting now. Today is an empty page in the story of your life. You get to choose what to write on it. Make your story part of His story. Thank you for sharing this video. One negative comment… We, your viewers can’t really see the video that well and enjoy it with you.

Adele has a song, "Million Years Ago" that kind of echos this Roy Clark song. I really like both. I used to watch Hee Haw back in the day solely to see Roy singing and picking. Incredible talent. Later in the early 80s, we used to bicycle through his old neighborhood in Tulsa.

Another song he did that was close to my heart is "Thank god and Greyhound she's gone."

Roy Clark playing with Glen Campbell is an absolute genius and arrangement. If you get a chance and can find it, you really need to take a listen.

Glad someone is finally exploring his music. He was a friend of the family for many years my uncle played with his band in the 70s and 80s

Back in "the day" I didn't like Roy that much...then I grew up and realized how talented he was.

Yankee great Mickey Mantle requested that Roy Clark perform this song at his funeral, which Clark graciously agreed to do and it was very moving to see.

This was wonderful but I really have to suggest that you find an earlier recorded version because that was so much richer and Fuller. As far as other songs the one I remember best is thank God and Greyhound she's gone which is funny.
