How is Lucasfilm Ok with This...I Really Don't Get it

Leslye Headland talks some absolute nonsense in an interview from 2019 where she says George Lucas shouldn't be the only one holding the key to Star Wars and...well...watch for yourself.

That's what turned me off to Disney's Star Wars more than anything else. I can't remember which show it was, but there was a big announcement at a con a couple of years ago and Kathleen Kennedy's big news was... it's a female led director, writer. No details at all, not even a title. Just "hey these are women!" -- that's when I gave up hope on any long term Disney Star Wars success under Kennedy. Even with movies that didn't gain a lot of money at the Box Office or weren't "particularly" written well had very good female characters. Solo a star wars story for me had very few good parts, good intention and potential but Emilia Clarke's Qira role was front and center. Shame they didn't pick up on that. What I wouldn't give for a Qira and the war of the crime syndicates disney plus story. That would be a good show with a strong female character that if they write it well could be very beneficial for the brand.

In 1971 George started writing his synopsis about a sprawling space saga based on his love of space serials from the 1940s 50s He hired a little known artist who conseptulised his vision and look of Star Wars .Both did it for the love of Cinema and story Telling ,no misogynistic views were thought of creating a once Beloved Francise. Or corrupt governments turning into dictatorships. Those political topics are just general things with a Star Wars skin. Marcia was a great editor, but so was Lucas, and the majority of the edit was done by Hirsch and Chew, overseen by Lucas. There were a number of issues with the production (just like every ambitious movie) and a team of people solved them all (just like every ambitious movie). A charitable interpretation of what she said would be this: George didn't do it alone, he had talented and inventive people at each level of the production, from design to the visual effects with both the original trilogy and even the prequels. He needed Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston to create the iconic designs that brought his vision to life. However, the way she like, you know, like did like, said it like, you know its all about the patriarchy, like, taking over and like, George Lucas like, didn't do it alone, like he couldn't.... What she said just drips with the modern interpretation of anything from the past that dominates the entertainment industry now. So afraid of making just "mere entertainment" she couldn't just praise Lucas vision, say he is indebted to extremely talented people who brought the vision to life and then add, "I think there is room to expand that vision and build on it in a new way with new talent" It has to be said in a way that diminishes one, the past, and two, men. Its pretty frustrating how many people in positions of power think that history began the year they were born or that they have some new and unique vision that must convey their "values" when what she should be worried about is telling a compelling story for serious and casual Star Wars alike.

Maybe you should actually listen to the full interview instead of just an out of context clip that is completely false. In the full interview, Headland was talking about the auteur theory and how it's bad and inherently misogynistic. She brought up Lucas because she had recently bought concept art from Ralph Mcquarrie from the original Star Wars (because contrary to popular belief, Headland actually loves the franchise and repeatedly sings its praises), and mentioned how he helped fulfill George's vision to the fullest and had a big impact on culture as a whole, yet isn't credited as much as Lucas because he is given the majority of the credit and is assumed to have done everything, which is untrue. Her point was that studios believing in the auteur theory would just hire directors because they're the director and supposedly have all the answers (like the image of Lucas she mentioned), and that they should hire directors more similar to who Lucas actually was as a director, which was someone who was smart enough to hire the right people to fully create his vision. She was praising him, not bashing him as the out of context clip suggested. Her main point of contention was the auteur theory, and she used Lucas as a positive example of the auteur theory being incorrect.
