I bought a new Toyota Tundra in Jan of 05. I'm still driving it. I do my own maintenance. I never have used anything but 100% synthetic oil. In recent years I don't drive much because I'm in my 80s now. I just change the oil each May regardless of mileage. I have never allowed the oil to remain in the engine after it began to turn the dark color. I have the Toyota 4.0 L V6 in a 2wd single cab body. It has never yet failed in any way. In two months it will be twenty years old exactly. The truck still gets the original range of mpg. Between 19 to 24 mpg. I buy my oil usually at Walmart in the five quart bottles for convenience. I will continue doing so. I expect this Toyota to still be running perfectly for my son long after I am history. Good video....

When I first made the switch from conventional to synthetic engine oil some 30 years ago, I did a heat test on small samples of conventional and synthetic. In two open metal containers, I separately heated the oils using a torch flame on the bottom of the containers, comparable to heating the containers on a stove top. The conventional oil produced thick acrid smoke, eventually igniting with a dirty flame, similar to a burning tire. The synthetic oil was heated the same way, where the oil was visibly boiling, but with no smoke; and after a longer period of time than that of the conventional oil, ignited into a smokeless flame comparable to refined kerosene. That made a believer out of me of the heat resistant properties with synthetic oil.

I have used both types of oil. The main thing at the end of the day is lubrication. As long as the oil is clean you’re basically good hands down. You’re not going to run out a motor doing religiously changing your oil. I had a 2003 Harley Davidson Road King with a 96 cubic inch motor with 105k miles on it. We broke case open to install a gear drive cam and upgrade displacement with new heads, we kept new heads on because their was literally no wear because of my religiously changing of oil.

I need to evaluate first before drawing an anecdotal conclusion. (1) I’ll for extreme friction load capability to simulate the friction pressure in the crankshaft, piston- cylinder, push rods which reaches 120,000 psi ! (2) Do a wear particle count and under microscope, assess the metal particle sizes to see how much debris are in the 10+ micron sizes. Oil is just a carrier fluid which carries with the oil the performance additives. Thus, this competition is comparing the additive in synthetics versus in refined petroleum base oil.

Very helpful but only in a general sort of way. What is really in synthetic oil? What is a paraffin and why does it matter? What is PAO and esters?
@bretthibbs60832 ай бұрын
The second question is that paraffin is a wax and Pennzoil is well known for using it and it causes a lot of sludge build up in engines and i have seen first hand what it can do and it's horrible. A mechanic at a dealership that i worked at had to use a vacuum cleaner to clean all the sludge build up and it took him a long time to clean it by hand and the half of the engine had to be torn down in order to clean it.

Many modern automobiles are designed for specific oil. Our new 2025 RAV4 requires 0w16 synthetic. The engine is designed for it. Those who say that it's too thin simply don't know the engineering behind why it is required.
@andrewwmacfadyen69582 ай бұрын
Some amount of myths floating around in the comments. Truth is even a cheap supermarket synthetic will last longer without breaking down than any mineral oil. Synthetic oil is also much less dependent on additives to achieve the desired viscosity and detergent characteristics. Additives start to break down after the engine reaches running temperature. All oils are likely to have some synthetic and some mineral oil in the blend but so called sem-synthetics were originally a substitute when synthetic oils base stocks were in short supply expensive. On a historical note mineral oil base stock made from undersea oil fields base stock (ie Gulf of Mexico or North Sea) were always considered the best for lube oil. If you have a turbo engine always use the best quality fully synthetic

In 79 three people gave me a old VW beetle, 63, 64, 65. Each owner use different oil. One used quaker state.and the bottom of the crank case was thick sludge. The other two were clean. Back in the 60s all oil was oil. So some regular oil is good for old cars.
@bloqk162 ай бұрын
A legend going around back in the 1960s through the '70s was that Quaker State and Pennzoil, both being from Pennsylvania crude petroleum, was paraffin based oil, and was more prone to having a waxy sludge buildup than engine oils from other regions. The same legend had it that if proper maintenance intervals for oil changes were done, no problems. But, if the oil was subjected to abuse of an overheated engine, or, prolong mileage between oil changes, it could result with a waxy sludge buildup with Pennzoil and Quaker State.

So the red double decker london bus company decided to stop changing their oil but only the filter more often and top up with regular Oil as needed. Great success. If you dont rev your vehicle like your a F1 driver in an uno, and chilax at 80 kph even on the highway, you can do 30-000 kms and the oil will still be be golden coloured. Ive travelled africa big time in my 2003 nissan cabstar, and havnt had to top up my radiator since new. Oil does not lose its viscosity and the sludge can be avoided by placing a magnet on the oil drain cap collecting metal fines. The impurity thing is a load of crap.

Oils ain't oils claim the Castrol adds. Castrol make a good point and very good motor oils. However, in some cases you should use a conventional oils with no additives. Motorcycles with a wet clutch are an example. I had been using a top brand oil with a anti friction additive on my Honda motorcycle, thinking it would prolong the engine life. After some 40,000 miles the clutch started slipping. Turns out the anti friction additive was causing the clutch to slip. Clutches need some friction to operate well. I learned my lesson and now use the recommended Honda oil for my motorcycle which does not contain additives.

@doodskie9992 ай бұрын
Not much really, just the additives. Heck you can even use car oil on a motorcycle or motorcycle oil in your car vice versa and 99% of the time it will be fine. But motorcycle oil has some additives to allow lubrication but also allow the clutch to grip properly while car oil has superior anti wear properties. Motorcycle oils last shorter due to the high rpm nature of their engine. Though some new bikes today have higher service intervals between 7000-10000kms like KTM and BMW. I actually experienced puncturing my bmw 1200gs oil pan, fixed it with jb weld and topped its oil with diesel oil as it was the only oil available in the middle of nowhere. I made it home, changed back to motorcycle oil and my motorcycle was fine lol
