I was the exact same way. The DVD cover for the grudge traumatized me as a kid. It was the same with jeepers creepers for some reason. I guess the single mysterious eye staring at you is just inherently spooky

Bro, that noise is TRAUMATIZING. I was like 8 when I woke up at 4 am to this movie playing and I was immediately scarred. lmfao My older sister used to sneak in my room in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT and make the grudge noise while hiding at the end of my bed. ;-;

I've seen many people wondering about PG ratings for some old movies, especially 80s-90s. "PG" just meant something different back then vs today. Now it means "ok for kids" - or at least that's how people treat it. In the past it was more literally "parental guidance required" - which meant: parents be warned that this may be too much for your kids to handle, use you parental judgement before letting them see it. And the reaction after 16:10 - classic, lol.

Clea Duvall who played Jennifer was also on Buffy, as the invisible girl Marcie in season 1! This is the only movie that has ever given me nightmares as an adult. I saw it in the movies, then bought the dvd and watched it several times at home. Then I had a nightmare about it, it got so bad I had to give the dvd away because I couldn't look at it in my bookshelf, haha. So watching you reacting to it now was my "rewatch" to see if I still feel anything and yup, not watching it again any time soon.

In addition to the urban legend of Kayako, there's also an older myth that feeds into the movie franchise. Supposedly during Japan's feudal era, a lord challenged one of his servants to a game of chess. When the servant won, the lord flew into a rage and commanded his guards to kill the man. After the servant died, the lord ordered the guards to go to his home and kill everyone there as well. And so the servant's wife, son, and pet cat were all brutally murdered. The boy and the cat did not know why they had been killed and could not rest. They merged together into a fearsome "youkai", a demon, and stalked the land, seeking vengeance that they would never find.

I highly, highly, highly recommend that you watch the 2nd one. I always thought it was so underrated, and I appreciate that it feels more like a true Japanese horror film than an Americanized sequel. I love this one, but LOVE The Grudge 2. And it’s still Takashi Shimizu, so it’s not taboo to say that.

It has been a while since I saw Grudge 2, but i know there’s an extended cut. Is the extended cut the one that provides a “backstory” for why Kayako’s spirit became the way it did, or is that the theatrical too? I apologize if you don’t know, but I always liked Grudge 2 as well, but I always hated that they tried to explain why her spirit stayed. It ruins the creepiness of the premise in my opinion.

At the end of one of my birthday parties, where I had gathered about 20 of my classmates, I forced them all to watch the movie with lights off (we were all around 10 years old at the time). i won't deny the Grudge scared the life out of me when i first saw it. i originally only went to see it because i'm a huge fan of Sarah M Gellar (Buffy fan boy also like horror). When i went to the cinema it was shocking a lot of people...some could barely watch it and some even left the cinema...but i got the feeling that wasn't because it was bad it was because it was freaking them out. Over time though i have come to enjoy the Grudge and films like it...the sequels aren't bad to be honest...especially the second one. the third is kind of pushing it though...but each to their own.

This was my first scary movie I saw in theaters … I was 13 in 2004. I was traumatized 😂 I absolutely love all the Ju-on and Grudge movies. You should watch the Director’s Cut of this film - in the additional scenes it shows Takeo snap Kayako’s neck, revealing the famous death rattle. I doubt it would’ve remained Pg-13 if they included that in the final cut 😅 I recommend the original Ju-on too! So glad you loved this movie!!! P.S. I went to Japan in 2018 and was able to visit the “grudge” house 🏠 (filming location of Ju-On films, it was so surreal). This franchise holds a special place in my heart ❤

Ju-On The Curse 1 and 2 were direct-to-TV movies from 2000 that tell the backstory of the house. Ju-On The Grudge from 2002 was the sequel to those films following the caretaker character. The Grudge is a remake of all three of these films. Ju-On The Grudge 2 from 2003 is mostly not remade by the 2004 film.

It’s been 20 years and 5 years since my aunt has passed. 🕊️💜✨ Miss you Aunt Shun. Thanks for the Japanese horror fetish I have. She also had Ju-On on DVD which is the all Japanese version that was in theaters in Japan in 2002. This movie and that one are almost similar in plot. 16:03 so its not really impersonating them at this point. Once you are tainted with the curse, when you die you become part of it. Think of it like this dark cloud of fear and anger that can take the shape of anything its consumed. The center of this cloud is "hair girl" (cant remember her name right now lol) because her death is kind of the driving force of everything, but she's not meant to be a mastermind or puppetmaster or anything.

The deal with the curse is that it follows anyone who's been in the house (different from western ghosts which are usually tied to a place or object). So, all of the police, the detectives, etc. are also being followed/killed by the curse, anyone who sets foot in the house. The Grudge 3 is good (showing the curse moving to the US), the others are considered not (2 and 4, the 2020 one). If you watch the original, Ringu (Ring), you will see it's almost the same movie, almost scene for scene. I wouldn't recommend reacting to any of them, they likely won't have a high viewer rate (and apparently, Japanese studios are way more strict with copyright).

Love your reaction to this. This is easily in my top 5 scariest movies despite it being PG13. As others have probably said, PG13 refers to the amount of gore, nudity, drug use, and vulgar language on display. There is one effective piece of gore used in the movie, but it plays it safe with all the other categories, getting it a PG13. Now, if how scary/traumatizing a movie was factored into the rating, this would easily by an R.

If you're up to it, I'd recommend the Ju-On series. Not just scarier but I (personally) feel better acted and as a whole, made more sense than any of the American Grudge films did. There's also considerably more to watch - nine films in total, with the final addition to the series being Sadako vs. Kayako which is essentially a Freddy vs. Jason-type thing, except that it's The Ring vs. The Grudge, basically. Just my opinion though, because the Japanese ones when I finally got around to watching them, scared the absolute crap out of me.

The Grudge creeped the hell out of me back then in 2004 and still makes my skin crawl today because I seen the Japanese Ju-On movies after this movie, and that was spookier than this remake of the original series. This is a remake of a Japanese film called Ju-On (much like The Ring is a remake of the Japanese film Ringu). The remake is directed by the same director of the original. This appears to be the director's cut (Yoko returning without her jaw wasn't in the theatrical version). So, it might not actually be PG-13.

Ok I was going to stop trying to watch new Reactor pages. But you got me Cass! I'm gonna have to watch more of your channel! One question, did you end up watching the Director's cut and not the PG13 version? Trivia: There were 2 Ju-On direct to video movies in Japan. Then they made the Theatrical Ju-On: The Grudge in Japan. Then there was a 4th Movie Ju-On: The Grudge 2. That 3rd movie is what A lot of the American version is based on. There are 13 Ju-on/Grudge movies. 4 of them were made in the U.S. The rest were Japanese. Plus there was a TV series in Japan in 2020 (Ju-On Origins). Plus about 5 short films based on the series...

I looved this movie! I used to watch it with my cousins when I was a kid. This was and still is the only movie that really scared me and made me feel weird and I saw more than 7 times. The original is better, just so so good

We don't really have a concept like this in the West, so it's not really like Smile. I'll preface by saying my understanding of the curse portrayed in this movie is based on more Chinese takes on it, which I'm mire familiar with, so it could be slightly different from how it is in Japan. But basically, the "grudge" in this movie ties into East Asian beliefs about energy, the energy that suffuses the universe and ourselves. Essentially, if someone dies in a very traumatic way, if they die with a lot of anger, pain, fear, etc, it can taint their spirit and even the place they died. So in this, the ghosts became cursed. They don't follow logic or reason anymore. They are beings of pure resentment that can't be reasoned with. It's a stain that follows anyone who touches it, like a REAL stain. There's nothing personal about it, in the same way there's nothing personal about touching ink and it staining you. It can't be transfered person to person, you have to have touched the stain yourself. I also understand SMG's character smiling at the "Buddhist ritual" at the graveyard. She made it sound much more mystical than it is. Again, I'm going off more chinese culture and customs than Japanese, so it's probably different to some degree. But yes, it's normal to light incense for passed loved ones. The smoke is thought to take your prayers to the loved one. It's sad in the way losing someonen is always sad, but it's believed ancestors live on in some way, and doing something like that can be more like visiting them. I also personally maybe don't have a very pessimistic view of death, and I've always found rituals like that quiet sweet. I'd probably smile too. Knowing someone still visits, respects, remembers, and loves their passed love one is so wholesome to me.

If you need another series, try Roswell (90s version). It has the guy from this movie and that Buffy episode as one of the main characters

American Grudge remake had 2 sequels and they are not bad considering they are straight to video. Also the Grudge remake from what was it, 2020? is in continuity with Japanese and American rings (according to the directors commentary)

Only The Grudge 3 was straight to Video, The Grudge 2 was theatrical release. In the topic of the original vs this remake I personally prefer the Remake as they have better pacing and tells the same story 2 is good too, and 3 isn't that bad and is only let down by the lower budget being obvious. But it continues the story from 2 so it's worth a watch. But 1 & 2 are great The films are seriously underrated The Grudge (2020) isn't a reboot or remake It actually takes place during the original film and second and references them But it's not very good as it's still a modern film.
