Nice!!! I did something similar back in 2017 on a CBR600. 5hrs and at the end of it, my ass was definitely killing me 😂. After I quit riding for a few years, recently got the ninja 400 a few weeks ago and considering doing that once again to the same spot as before. Curious though, did you take any breaks or just did the ride in one stint? Other than fuel stops, I did one stint, 75-80° F weather so wasn't harsh temperatures - but I was a little concerned if such distances in one shot without cooling the bike down are bad. I'm not worried at all about the bike handling the highway - definitely proven capable.

@warren010h
@warren010h 2 жыл бұрын
@@brookboussaken3887 Sure man. Was a combination of things that ultimately made me take a break. One, I spent way too much time riding and at that time period (2017), I begin to get more conscious of my future and develop and idea of how I wanted it to be. So I needed to shift hours I spent riding almost daily, to other priorities. Two, I had upgraded to a CBR600 from a R3 and though I loved the bike, I just felt kinda exhausted a lot after riding. Even in shorter rides. And dealt with neck aches often from the helmet I had at the time. Third, I lost a friend who rode, which interestingly enough, happened like a week after I started thinking about taking a break. I sold my bike a week after that happened as I sorta took it as a sign to go ahead and call it. There was the other part of riding at that point where I found myself increasingly trying to get lower and lower on curly back roads though I knew I shouldn't have. And track days were not in the mix at that time and I realized the risk of wanting to get that out on public roads. So ultimately, I think I just needed to grow a bit more, refocus my priorities and such, and come back to it later from a more mature mindset. I can say the break was just what I needed. My first week with my R3 back in 2016, I had over 500 miles on it lol. Since I've started back riding this year, I purchased my Ninja 400 a few months ago, and just not hit 600 miles and did my first service. I ride maybe once or twice a week, for short riders just to get a fix and enjoy the weather and such. Planning some road trips too. But the point is, I have better control of my time on it and still have things prioritized as they should be. When I first started riding, there were times at like 9pm where I'd have an itch and I'd go out and ride. Now, I'm like, ahh, it can wait till tomorrow. I even ride in like 20° once right before it started snowing in the winter because I had gone 2 weeks without riding and was craving it 😂. But I suppose that comes with being a new rider. But no I enjoy the experience a whole lot more now this second go around. I'll probably get an R7 at some point (I no longer want a 600 or bigger bike), and maybe a cruiser later. I had all the crazy fun and speeding, and saw enough of the risky stuff the first time. Right now, just trying to enjoy riding to myself, away from heavy traffic when I can, and just stay safe ya know.

I couldn't agree more on the highway winds blowing you around. It's manageable and if you know it's windy, you be conscious and prepared. I've done a 1200km tour with my 400 and it didn't really have any problems. Everyone I rode with had to gas up more frequently than me as well. Great bike

I usually avoid commuting on the motorways on windy days....but it’s ok, I can enjoy the twisty longer way 😄😄😄

Good video. I’ve had my ninja since June. Your comment about gusty winds is accurate.My last bike was a Honda CB1300 which was a heavy neutral handling bike not affected by wind gusts. So I definitely notice how the light, full faired ninja sets sail for Hobart when it’s windy. It’s not a problem for experienced riders but as this bike is LAM approved it’s good that you highlight this.

I've been riding for 12 years & pushing the 50yr old mark. My first bike was a 2002 ZX7R. I rode it for 10 years. My husband bought me a Vulcan S 650 & I bought a '95 Ninja 600. I have ridden anything smaller. Today I went to the Kawi dealer looking to "upgrade" the 600 to a newer Ninja 650. I sat on a used 2019 and it felt so comfortable. Unfortunately, it had just sold. So I sat on and discussed the 400 with the salesperson. I'm not an aggressive rider. I honestly don't need alot of power, but it's what I'm used to. Going down in CC's seems "backwards" if you know what I mean. Also, I don't do much highway riding anymore. However, after watching your review you've put some of my concerns at ease. I think it's going to be a done deal. The Ninja 400 sounds like all I really need. Thanks!!!

I have been commuting to work on my 2020 N400 for over a year. Traffic is non-existant for me since I have to lane filter every time. I coast at 90+ mph just fine without any wind knockback. Definitely good acceleration to get around slower cars. Concerns I run into are keeping up with maintenance (chain clean/lube every 500 miles) and oil changes every 5k miles since they rack up quickly on pure highway commutes. My tire squares out from the straight line driving as well. Gotta buy a new rear tire every 5k miles it seems. Trying a touring Continental type right now. Im at 13k miles on it now.

I got over 12k miles on mine. It's a very fun/easy bike to ride and insurance coverage is very cheap. It has more power than most people will ever need, it might not take you 0-60 in 3 seconds or have the lightning fly by speed that the 600cc supersports easily do, but it offers the fun wot speed in every gear. I can guarantee that 95% of people who say they are getting bored of the power are talking about straight away speed, anyone can go fast in a straight line on a motorcycle, but if you can't handle twisties on a 400 at respectable speeds with full control, you have not outgrown this bike. Let's be honest though, the 400 is a nice looking bike, but not a bike to showoff. Skinny tires, simple body, and inferior sound even with a slip on exhaust. Pull up or park next to a 600cc supersport or a liter bike and it will look like a little toy. So don't act like rambo on a 400. Overall the Nina 400 is an excellent & enjoyable bike.

It is good to know the limitations of Kawasaki 400 or any other entry-level motorcycles for beginners. Australia have some of the most unique avians (birds) in the world. I rode my ninja 250 1050 miles (1600 km) on interstate 95 in 3 days very comfortably. I cruised at 70-75mph (110 kph) most of the time and could accelerate to go around a vehicle in a few seconds. It actually has lots of power at that speed because it’s just under the power band in 6th gear. When you start to accelerate it just gets better and better. It’s silly to say a 400 is borderline, the 250 was great. I weigh 155 (68 kg) btw, so a heavy guy might have different results.

yea 400s r perfect commuter bikes. got a drz400 myself. does fine on the highway. ur not gonna be going 100 mph but u can cruise at 70-75. if u wanna make it more comfortable at higher speeds just make the gear ratio tall. got a 38 tooth rear sprocket for my drz and now i can sit comfortably at 80 mph. they arent very good touring bikes cause they rev higher and they arent really meant for comfort, they arent meant for speed either but its a solid bike to get u around and still have fun

im looking hard at the 400 or the 650 as a commuter and learning tool as i want to become a better rider in the twisty. if you had a chance to do it again what do you think the better bike is? the ninja 400 or the fully faired ninja 650? thank you so much for your great videos and real world views on this bike.

250 is enough for highway, sitting at ~7000 rpm with 110 km/h speed. And though it's even lighter than 400, wind was never a problem and I've experienced strong crosswinds on it. So you can get why it's hard to me to imagine someone wondering if 400 is enough for highways)

Depending on your highways you’re cutting it quite close, with some highways being 70 or 80 mph speed limit

I respectfully disagree I'm sorry I just live very close to 95 I've had two other bikes before my Ninja 650 and I was not nearly as comfortable only being able to top out between one bike was 85 with 300 that was very scary because you have tractor trailers next to you and going to pass you yes going downhill they hit 90 sometimes but I definitely think they're awesome bikes maybe if you got the gearing perfect and headers and pipe you can get 125 Maybe my bike only does 140

Did you notice power loss when you put on your Leo Vince in the high rpm range? My RPM’s are dropping and then it seems to catch up, possibly the clutch but it started as soon as I put on the slip-on? Thanks man super entertaining, I rode mine 1500 miles and other than wind it was a blast!!

it could be the clutch. these bikes have a wet noodle clutch and have a common clutch slip issue. can fix it with firmer clutch springs and a clutch assist spring. i upgraded my fristion plates, clutch springs, and a clutch assist spring. and it feels and performs wayyyy better

I was hoping you'd point out the light weight of the bike. I just bought a Z400, and the only issues I have with it are how even just a light breeze has me leaning into it. Otherwise, a great starter bike with plenty of power to keep you going for longer than the 250 or 300 cc bikes

With engine vibrations, you said they're not too bad, but can you elaborate further please? Do your hands eventually go numb from it after x minutes or hours? Thank you!
@Kwackajack
@Kwackajack 3 жыл бұрын
Yea they will eventually go numb but not from the vibrations, more so from the slight forward lean. It's not too leaned forward though so you should last quite a while. The mirrors and pegs don't vibrate too much and you can clearly see through the mirrors at highway speeds. I give it an hour or so for me before I'd want to hop off and have a break

I would love to see a comparison video between the 400 and the 650. i've owned a ninja 650 and currently own a 300. i would love to see how much closer to the 650 the acceleration pull really is. there aren't any videos that i can find that clearly compares these two bikes since they aren't technically in the same category. i know for a fact that the 400 will be slower than a 650, i can read the spec sheets, but id love to see how they compare regardless. in my area, the cost of ownership is greatly reduced if you plate a 400 or lower cc motorcycle. hence why i'm debating whether the additional cost of ownership would be worth it for me. ** By the way, love your content. keep it up**

Thanks for the suggestion mate! Glad you enjoy the videos too. I'd love to get my hands on a Ninja 650 and film some content, I was fortunate enough to have a z650 for a day and I can confirm that the extra torque from the 650 is definitely noticeable. Hopefully I can get my hands on more bikes soon!

I have the same exact question, I couldn’t find any information either so I went ahead and bought the 2021 650, I like the feel of the 400 but was afraid it did have enough UMPF to it. I would love to see a comparison as well.

Having ridden a dozen or so bikes from 250-1200 cc, including some SuperSports, and liter-bikes, you will always find yourself getting used to the acceleration of any sportbike if you own it and ride it a lot. With that being said, the Ninja 4000 is faster than your average sportscar 0-60, and equally as fast in the 1/4 mile drag race, so if all you want to be able to do is outpace your buddy with an entry level sportscar (Say, the base model new Supra), you have enough speed to pull away, especially at low speeds. What this translates to for functionality is that, you won't ever feel like you can't make a move to pass someone, because you can easily get up and go, just by dropping a gear. By contrast, the 250cc bikes, especially the CBR 250, is nearly at max speed at highway speeds. For mph, highway speed is 65-85, and the CBR maxes at 85ish.

Question from a viewer in the States: I currently have a Ninja 400 that I use mostly for highway commuting. I definitely agree with you that the 400 has enough power to be highway worthy but gets kicked around by the wind a bit. I was wondering if you've ridden the Ninja 650 at all, and how that bike compares in terms of dealing with the wind?
@Kwackajack

I haven’t ridden the Ninja 650, but have ridden the Z650, the naked brother. Even though that bike is unfaired I found it better on the highway because of the bit of extra weight

@@Kwackajack Thanks for the reply! I've been debating whether the 650 might be worth the upgrade for that added weight, and this is really helpful! The 650 has the same or higher curb weight in the official specs as the Z650, so I gotta imagine she'd feel a little more sturdy as well. :)

Welllll.....probably better than my 1964 Honda 305 CB77 SuperHawk, which I can still cover a thousand MILES (not kilometers) a day at legal speeds a day. No, the suspension isn't the most comfortable, and the drum brakes both ends take some learning to use well, but I can run away and hide from ANY Harley-Davidson in a drag race or when the road gets twisty. I've made several THOUSAND dollars at Tulsa International Raceway racing Hardlys on "run what-ya'-brung" nights and NEVER lost. At 67 years of age, I'd rather not race from Tussa to Denver anymore, but I will, except for a GoldWing!

Agree that the Ninja 400 is a great highway bike. I rode mine 800 km moving house from Coffs to Woodgate Beach, and it just hums along the freeway at 110 kmh, and overtakes in 6th gear. Very flexible motor with good torque. I'm looking at seat options as more than 2 hours has you wanting to stop and walk around, and for touring (which it does just fine), a bit more seat comfort is the only improvement I can think of. I'm looking at a Corbin seat with tasty matching green trim. Everything else with the Ninja 400 is just perfect. I put the higher bubble windscreen on, and it definitely improves highway comfort and reduces fatigue. My wife's Ninja 400 has the standard screen and I notice more wind on her bike. I think it is a worthwhile upgrade. We both have Akrapovic slip-ons, and I have to send my ECU for re-programming when I fit the matching Akrapovic headers I bought for my bike (sending it to Norton's in USA). Just love this bike, and I ride it a lot more than my Ducati Diavel (which is an amzing 'fantasy' bike, and super, super comfortable with the stock seat and Touring Pack (high screen) - no other mods needed. BTW.
