This guy! He warms up with a bit of can opener cranking, and then moves smoothly into dropping elbows to pop open a triangle. SOMEHOW, he doesn't end up getting disqualified. Explain this to me!

Hey guys! I’m Edgar the guy in the blue gi. Thanks for all the pointers. A little background story. At this time I was 6 months into training and just thought I’d try out my skills in a competition. Never did any wrestling or anything like that so I’m sorry for the bad wrestling technique and mistakes I made. The can opener had me pretty sore for like a week but I didn’t think too much of it at the time because of the nerves I’m assuming and I just live bjj man all the roughness that comes with it I invite it so I didn’t really think too much in it. Once we were off the mats we overheard the team talking about his 7+ years in wrestling and mma paying off. Anyways this whole tournament was a wonky but good experience. I had no corner or team with me so since it was my first time it was also a bit hard to navigate around everything on my own 😅. Ever since this day I’ve dedicated myself 2 times a day at least 2 hours of training and after a year I was promoted to blue belt. I will continue to try my best to represent this sport as much as possible so I apologize for the mistakes😂

There is nothing to be sorry about in this match - You definitely gave it your best, and you were up against a rough opponent who clearly had strong wrestling. Negative that was NOT an elbow, it actually never made contact, that's called a forearm shiv, it's an okay attack but a grate frame, nothing wrong with it in MMA or Jujitsu. In the state that I compete in amateur MMA, practitioners are not allowed to use elbows but they are allowed to use the forearm, I believe this technique would have not been called an elbow by a seasoned referee. Let's be honest he didn't drop it from on high, he didn't drop it with all his weight or force, if my training partner did this to me I'd be annoyed IF he got pissy when I employe the same "dirty"/gritty tactics, if he welcomes the grit then I'm like, okay cool we can actually have a realistic roll not that goofy butt scooting, guard pulling, Jiu-Jitsu nerd stuff. If my competitor did this to me I would just do it back🤷🏽‍♂️.

The elbow wasn't that bad to me as it didn't look like an intentional strike or really that hard. In my opinion it was over the line, but I think the ref should have just warned him not to be so rough. Not sure why the ref didn't say anything about the can opener if it was illegal according to the rules.
