50 years since I was there with pilots from multiple squadrons flying 5-6 hops a day trying to get our training done before end of fiscal year. Last hop would end up North Island, where this Jersey boy would learn that only milk would put out a Mexican fire. Truly appreciate your calm smooth voice.

El Centro was the beginning of the end for me. Pulling off target for the 4th time , on the 4th hop of the day, lefthand pattern, I hear a voice say "Mark, look around now." Look to my left and see the TA-4 who is supposed to be behind me and the back of a white helmet. Leveled the wings, extra lift, and he slid beneath me. I don't know who that voice was saving that day..., me, the other pilot, or the "safety" officer's career. No debrief, never talked to either. I'm slow to 'burn' until I think things through, but by that time we were on to the 5th hop of the day. I was far from perfect with 3 instances where I lost concentration. wrong rw, ADF approach, and worst a near ATS at Nellis. But my orders in '73 were to become an ATC and head back to NAS Kingsville. Had very little self confidence most of my life and the idea of possibly becoming an instructor broke what little I had then. I DOR'd. What I'm most proud of, putting my aircraft on the 3 wire 10/11. This is where I get to say, "If I only knew then what I know now." 'fingers and toes' that's exactly how I thought of flying smoothly.

My skipper was determined our squadron looked sharp around the boat. "Few see us flying away from the boat, so we shall have the most disciplined echelon when they do see us." At sea in those days we entered the break at ABOVE 250 knots. Thanks for the video.

Nothing has changed, I run to the window or outside for every pass, breaking my neck to see them until out of site...every day the whole week they fly. I wish my cousin, who flew more than 200 missions in P-47s against the Nazi forces in WW2, could watch these wonderful videos, too. He remained in the USAF after that war rising to the rank of Lt. General. Before becoming a general officer, he got to fly nearly every fighter the USAF ever had. While he never talked about his work in the war, he always told me how much he loved flying those airplanes. He passed away a few years after retirement, but I know he would love to share a few of those beers with you, Pail.

NAFEC was my favorite place to bird watch for the past 15 years, until I moved to Texas last fall. I miss the old Pearl of the Desert. Many many times out there at Photocalls, Blue Angels Winter Training, meeting the team, and just enjoying all the fleet traffic in the winter, spring and fall.

If I had seen this type of video when I was in my teens, I would have made a different life choice. My dad was a B-17 pilot who flew 35 combat missions over Nazi Germany including the bombing of Dresden, which a great many people grossly misunderstand and which the media has promoted a false narrative about that mission. That's beside the point. The fact is that what my dad saw during the war scarred him to where he NEVER talked about ANY of his missions. Sadly, I think his service during WW2 also colored his perspective about flying. I wish it hadn't. I have come to realize now approaching the end of my life that what I truly regret is not having served. I am in awe of people like you Growler who do what you do with what seems effortless ease. On top of that, your calm surgical description of what you're doing in these clips is what makes them so enjoyable. I am sorry your "buy me a beer" account is no longer active. However, on the off chance that Providence smiles upon me and good financial fortune falls into my lap you'll be on my list of people who will enjoy my abundance simply because it would be the only way to tell you that I am greatful for your service. Thank you.

Hi Pail, another amazing video to make my 0330 morning coffee enjoyable.I love it! I am currently living and working in Jax FL, and my work location is 18 miles from Cecil Field, and apx 22 miles from Jax NAS. A little over a year ago, I noticed a lot of Goshawks flying over our warehouse about 500 ft off the deck with tail hooks down. This went on for most of the day. Could you please shed some light as to what kind of training these pilots were doing - I kept comming out of the trailer I was loading to watch, because it brought back childhood memories of me riding my bike to Jax NAS where my father worked to sit at the runway fence and watch touch and go landings. Fortunately, my supervisor had spent time on a base in Iraq with A-10's so he too was enjoying the show. As always thanks for what you do, and taking time to make these awesome videos for us. Executed seamlessly. Love the Goshawk, and the Hawk too. I live in a village near the old R313 restricted airspace over RAF Scampton, where the Red Arrows were based until the end of last year when the base closed. Three times a day in good weather, depending on the time of year, between 2 and 9 Hawk MkT1Ak’s flying around. Just awesome. 30+ years of watching them train each year. Now they operate out of RAF Waddington, so we rarely see them. Excellent narration as always. 👍🏼

Great video as always. I live in Long Beach Ca and several weekends a year the Marines will do similar maneuvers where they line up with the runway and then circle back to land. The best part is I can walk out the front door and the plane is straight overhead with the gear down. Love that sound!

It’s always good for these guys to do these dets. You never know when a little knowledge about someplace might come in handy in the future. One night after A7 RAG night quals on the Connie, they sent a couple of us to El Centro. Unfortunately the weather was below our mins. So we pressed on to Yuma (Miramar had storms). Fortunately I remembered the Yuma VOR was 15 miles north of the field(from a A4 weapons det). ATC/Tower wasn’t working. Otherwise we never would have found the runway. Shutdown with 15 min remaining

This is a neat jam, loving it. 🧡 This week here's been a weird weather. Bouncing back and forth both sides of 32F all week. An airline plane was boarded, and on taxiway, it slid to snow. Couldn't get off itself. (It was pulled back to the gate, checked and back on track.) I know that the taxiway is 180 degrees, quite tight and "round". (Been in a plane on this taxiway over a hundred times.) I've never heard before that a plane would have slid in that way. We have snow every winter etc, but have never seen this kind of bouncing before. The next day I was sliding with my car when coming to the highway crossing. There just simply wasn't any friction to break at first and downhill. 🙄

Never been an aviator but have absolutely loved every civilian flight I've been on, been lucky enough to have had a couple of short flights on military helos which were nothing short of breathtaking!
