There HAS TO BE ACCOUNTABILITY for the Afghanistan pullout debacle. No fines and handslaps. Job termination, jail and/or prison.
@traind9 күн бұрын
For the most part, there has been accountability... Biden was not re-elected. The SecDef and central command commander brought Biden multiple options to exit Afghanistan and Biden (or Jill Biden and/or the 35 year old mba who was actually in charge) rejected those plans and gave a direct order that resulted in what happened. Austin and the Marine general who commanded Centcom at the time could have publicly resigned in opposition but they followed orders instead. If they didn't, someone else would have done it. That's a judgement call. Technically, I believe Biden's order was lawful even though it was a disaster.

One huge problem is the Top-Heavy nature of the DOD. We have more flag-grade officers (or at least as many) as we did during WWII, when the Department of WAR and the Department of the Navy were 10X bigger than our current force. The Generals and Admirals also can be corrupted by the lure of post-retirement board memberships with defense manufacturers. Perhaps it should be illegal for anyone above O-6 to take $ from the defense industry, not just for 1 year, but permanently. All the woke/DEI/social experiments need to go and we need to focus on tough, realistic training and high standards

When people at the top have a career first mentality as opposed to looking out for the people at thr bottom, stuff like this happens. My Dad's and his friends experience in Vietnam effects the way I see these situations. So many good people were killed, injured and affected for life so people at the top could push politics and careers. History has shown that to be a disaster. We have to change that as soon as we can.
@luddite4change4498 күн бұрын
In the 1940s the US made a decision to go from a professional personnel model for life time employment with slow but mostly guaranteed promotion, to a shorter career model that incorporates many aspects of March Madness. A professional model creates professional behaviors, a career model generates self centered career behaviors. Bonus. The longer professional model required fewer general/flag officers to function.

This is the damn most true and nonpartisan thing I have read in a long time. When I was serving (my time as an O not when I was an E). I used to say if you want to make the next grade you are too concerned with looking a certain way. You perform best when you want to get out, when I put in my papers to resign my commission, I didn’t give a flying F and was a pain in the butt to my command, but my guys would have run through walls for me

+1! EVERY American military recruit seeking a command appointment, especially through one of the service academies, must read David's book "Steel My Soldiers' Hearts - Hopeless to Hardcore" and take to heart and mind his experience with 4/39 9th Infantry Div. and how he turned this unit around using mostly the most undisciplined and rebellious non-comms and company level officers. One of them was my brother who Col. Hackworth briefly discussed "from NYC" in his book. Col. Hackworth is the antithesis of a Mark Milley and like ilk. A must read for anyone charged with the responsibility for young American men who now, or will, offer their lives in defense of this Country. RIP Col. David H. Hackworth.

From an outsider looking in .... this may cause a stir ... the American Army has been beat up lately. The big war machine of the U.S. hasn't been performing. Not because of the troops of all divisions, but because of leadership and it's pussy footing, bleeding heart stance. It's like Jacko said, "What is the Department of Defense for ... to fight and win wars." And the Military hasn't seemed to have been allowed to be WarFighters and do their jobs. We always hear from the "Experts" over hear in their comfy chairs explaining fighting wars ... but never the people on the ground (because they can't) ... the frustration of not being able to do their job. How many just hang their head in frustration by orders that were passed down? "But they are right there and it could be done!" Type thing

Much of the waste, fraud and abuse in the DoD comes from contract fulfilment. Bonuses are paid to contractors even when milestones are missed and QA is ignored. That wasted money can be used for essentials needed for warfighting- "beans, bullets, bandages". Next, the DoD can focus on warfighting instead of "peacekeeping" and "nation building". The US military has never been properly equipped for this, and it should not be in the business of doing either. It's in the business of closing with and destroying the enemy. Finally, the DoD needs something out of it's control, but that is in the control of citizens- it needs civilian-elected leadership that creates foreign policy to limit the number of deployments into hostile areas. If we truly respect Americans in uniform, then we should only deploy them when it is absolutely necessary to do so.

As someone remotely involved in the extraction process, with my spouse sitting right next to me doing her part with DoS I think there is a another lens to look at the withdrawal. When handed, an empty glass I support the ground commanders and workers trying to make it work. As a commander my number one job is to ensure the safe return of my troops from any conflict when its within my power. I don't have the option of quitting in the middle of the fight. I think resignation in process is not the answer building success with the teams you have is the answer. Never again should be your motto.

Where did the “yellow T-shirt” people come from because SOMEONE up the chain truly believes that’s court martial worthy. I don’t want to hear commissioning source…I was a service academy guy and that was NOT what I was taught. It is incumbent on leaders at all levels to know when to say no. Not disobey…not disrespect…say no and tell the truth. Too many people are more worried about the next promotion than the mission and their people. I really think we need to clean house. By we, I mean they…I’m retired.

This sounds a lot like education and if you guys say this guy taking over the department of defense then I will trust you that you know what you are doing. I would say that the same respect should be offered to the department of education and the schools of this nation. I can’t imagine somebody coming in and saying we’re gonna take over the department of defense close it down and get it all back to the states which doesn’t make any sense. hitwo have not been a fan of the Department of Education but that’s because politicians are running the show instead of true educators. I would love to change it like a real teacher taking over getting rid of all the politicians and making decisions that are based on the data and science, and get the politicians, many of who are principles and other administration, and states. And fully fund education, so that we can have an educated population to make good decisions, and even go, serve in the military. What we have right now are too many people that are so out of shape that the military can’t take them and not intelligent enough to. Take care of these complex weapons systems.

All the critters, worms and grubs go scurrying. You wouldn't be interested. There is honesty on the forest floor - in the sand - at sea. It is not what do you want, but rather what do we need? anticipation, expectation - in our future - to get there we start, here unfortunately it is not so much a team sport as we hope - Each unit has a gauntlet to run. Then it rolls up - I see some got it, some don't, some will, some won't - common - denominator --- Made on Earth - by Humans. If we don't kill ourselves first. Hum Back to the stone age. The way every character begins the game, empty handed what God graced us with, an accident of birth. Some may be born into luxury and have a table to sit at but it is still the same, it scales. The rich and powerful suffer too - each an individual on a quest. Life an adventure - could be - it is up to you. I say roll the dice, Elon said no dice. Actually no die but that is the basic idea - and a really good story for another time. sfat - no die - run away ha Fix the DOD - Yes - explain your budget. I saw the aftermath after SEALs murdered two fishermen and the entire chain of command covered it up. To include patching the bullet holes on the fishing boat, washing the blood stains, and repainting the boat and burying the bodies at sea.
