How Jollibee Beat McDonald's in the Philippines | History of Jollibee & The Tony Tan Caktiong

Күн бұрын

In 1975, the 22-year old Tony Tan Caktiong decided to shell out Php 350,000 (Around 6,500 USD in 2019) and went on to franchise two Magnolia Dairy Ice cream parlors - The Cubao Ice cream house and the Quiapo ice cream house. Noticing that his competitors were gaining on him, he started asking his customers for feedback on how he can improve the shop further. They told him that they liked his ice cream, but they'd love it if he served hot meals.
He listened to what his customers were asking for, and launched the Yumburger. This turned out to be an instant hit. The Yumburger's success kickstarted the rise of Jollibee. But in order to win in the Philippines, Tony Tan Caktiong needed to act fast because word was spreading that McDonald's was about to enter the country.
McDonald's had a 23-year head start, and over 5,000 locations before it entered the Philippines. Its competitor was the 3-year old Jollibee. Tony Tan Caktiong had big plans for Jollibee, but he had two options: stand down or go head-to-head with McDonald's. He chose war.
This video is about the history of Jollibee, the inspiring success story of how Tony Tan Caktiong led Jollibee into beating McDonald's in the Philippines.

The fact that when you mentioned the "Yum burger" as being "our" burger is a testament to how integrated Jollibee is to our culture and country.

Yep, I have tried the Yum burger on a few occasions, I am pretty sure they have intestines as part of the beef parts. I find the Yum burger to be not very good, but I am an American. I am sure the people who grew up eating Jollibee from birth find the taste good.

Mike Jones The worst burger is the Burger Mcdo, which is marketed as a pinoy burger. But it was indirectly saying that a Filipino burger is mediocre. But I think the Yum Burger minus the hideous dressing is great.

@@eduardochavacano Never tried the Burger McDo, I like the McDouble which is double meat one layer of cheese, I don't think it's available in Philippines, and the Double Quarter Pounder, not sure if it's available in Philippines. The ground beef from Jollibee is nasty tasting, and I am sure they mix in organs/intestines into the meat.

A perfect metaphor for this: back when lived in Quezon City, I always passed by the Jollibee at Barangay Sikatuna. Across the street was a McDonald's. The McDo was always there, reminding me of the Krusty Krab vs. the Chum Bucket... until it closed in 2010. The Jollibee stands there still. The McDo is now a Citibank.

Philippines food in general is pretty nasty, and McDonalds have a mostly American menu minus the spaghetti and fried chicken on the menu. Jollibee has filipino food which the locals love the taste. One of the factors that also contributed to the success of Jollibee was how it impacted the lives of regular Filipinos. Jollibee's food is equated as a prize for many. A very special pasalubong from anyone in the family. It was deeply rooted in our childhood thus engraving it and associating it with childhood memories and happiness. It is what most of Filipino children dream to get on their birthday, graduation, or even just after going to church on Sundays.And the food that children loved are still there until they get old. The same flavors and experience. It's a nostalgia. It was that special connection from the childhood that keeps Jollibee successful.

Sadly, Jollibee now serves smaller portions (especially when they removed the champ burger), has dirty or stinky stores (I remember the smell of grease and sweat emanating from the chairs and tables), and odd combinations (I'll never forget those god-awful strawberry fries 🤮) that would hardly come from a person with such background. It's sad to see a restaurant that started with placing the customer first grew into just another commercialized fast food chain.

the smaller serving is probably due to increase in raw materials(meat, flour) but they what to keep the same "pang-masa" price, hence smaller portions. As for the smell, that's on how the management handle the store. managers, supervisors, and even the franchisee on how they train thier employees and keep the cleanliness high.

The rise of Jollibee serves as an interesting example of how to, at the very least, counteract the global market. By appealing to the core values and behaviors of their local base instead of casting the widest net possible, they retained a niche but more loyal fanbase. No corporate tricks or heavy marketing, just a deep understanding of what their customers want. And really, isn't that the point of entrepreneurship? It's not about giving you the "best" product, it's giving you *your* product, just like how you want it.
@Theophan123
@Theophan123 Жыл бұрын
It's more than just "appealing to core values and behaviors of local base" (which literally just means being family-friendly and kid-friendly), there's some national pride involved in Jollibee being a rival fast food chain to McDonald's, which is a symbol of American culture. Not many establishments get to do tht

Now, Jollibee seems to be reducing its quality to make it more affordable (perhaps to avoid increasing prices too much due to inflation). I think Tony should check on his franchises again because if this becomes the norm, JFC will soon face decline.
@montesa35

JFC alone, not just Jollibee. They have already reduced the true quality of Chinese dishes for Chowking, quality of Filipino grilled Chicken barbeque for Mang Inasal, reducing & choosing cheap suppliers for making of pizza for greenwich, and also the same for Red Ribbon for making cakes/pastries. The only franchise that I still like from JFC is Burger King, since they really maintain the same quality of flame grilled burgers

Agreed but it has something to do with supply constraints and inflation meaning the equivalent of colonel saunders OG KFC vs the KFC ones corp. As the marketing goes as corporate Jollibee is slowly becoming more and more doing simple things to budget it's costing. So the reason burgers aren't so good anymore is because they're more quantity than quality plus they held belief in nostalgia holding people together

Before Mcdo entered the Philippines in 1980, Jollibee's major competitor was Tropical Hut. Tropical Hut is owned by the Que family who also owns Mercury Drug. As a kid I was a frequent customer.. after watching movies in cubao.. then it transfered to Aurora blvd beside Coronet theater in the later years of the 70s and the rest as they say is history... Though there is no record of it since it was made as a commission. idk how that works before but the gist of it that all rights will go to the company after it's done The original logo used to be color orange, then it got revised to red. that time the logo was claimed by another artist. I don't blame you if you don't believe what you're reading. Neither did I at first, but as I talked more with my relatives in our reunion I was just baffled. 350,000 pesos in 1975 is probably around 10-15 million pesos in 2021. That's not a small investment. Anyhoo, McDonald's is piss poor in taste and quality. Their food taste like paper, they just don't tickle the Filipino palate

I remember when mcdo add burger steak into their menu. I kid you not it was traumatizing i literally almost puke, the problem of mcdo burger steak is the gravy. It was white and tasted so weird, and not like Jollibee burger steak which is delicious Burger Steak is my favorite Jollibee menu

Your title is misleading and unfair to MacDonald's. They have over 650 branches in the Philippines and that is not a failure. Being second only to Jolibee is like getting a silver prize....still a win.

Jolibee is Too Expensive nowadays..... i used to get their 6pc/$10 for Lunch Everyday, but now 6pc is like $14 For $14, it's better to eat at a Buffet. ex: Shakey's Lunch a Bunch ALL YOU CAN EAT is ONLY $12, eat as much Chicken, Pizza, Spaghetti, Salad, etc.... as you want

Confucianism is a huge factor, most if not all countries in the Sinosphere (Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam) are heavily influenced by Confucian values. The Philippines is more connected to the Hispanic and Indospheres.

Where Mcdonalds failed is making their products cheaper as the counterpart in Jollibee's menu where in they let quality of their food began to decrease just to lower the price. The fact that they're using international ingredients which is more expensive really compromised their quality over quantity battle in their products. The most obvious onw was their burger which taste really different and cheap, and I remember their Chicken Mcdo meal was P84, but when Jollibee decided to rollback the price of Chickenjoy to P76, Mcdo launch ther "new and improved" Chicken Mcdo which also rollback their chicken meal from P84 to P75 (and the taste became worse for me) lol.
