Later on, Itachi infiltrated Danzo's henchmen to get close to him and warn him, "if something happens to Sasuke, I'm not only coming for you, but I'll share all Konoha's most guarded secrets and cause all the other great nations to destroy the village" Danzo is evil, but not stupid. Itachi dared to kill his own clan, he wasn't going to hesitate to turn against the village, if Danzo messed with Sasuke. Danzo cared about the village in his own twisted way and fortunately he took Itachi's words seriously.

This theory kinda collapses when you remember that Itachi's loyalty was always to the Leaf, not the Akatsuki. Nor did he he actually want to capture Naruto. However, the same can't be said for Kisame. So its more accurate to believe that Itachi wanted Kakashi and some others to be alerted, and make it seem like them being detected was genuine rather than an orchestration by Itachi, thus not raising suspension to Kisame.

Later on we found out Jiraiya was always a "spy" relating everything about the Akatsuki to the Leaf village...also Itachi was a Double agent or else he could have taken out many Leaf Shinobi easily if he wanted too...

I think its pretty much revealed that it was on purpose that Itachi revealed themselves because Itachi didn't want to capture Naruto, but he had to fool Kisame and the rest of the Akatsuki by pretending he was actually trying to catch Naruto, and i mean it was all revealed when in shippuuden they show he was just Itachi of the leaf, and all he wanted all his life was to protect his brother and his village.
