Nice honest vid. To explain why Kanye is using the Gap: Kanye has always wanted to make clothes for the masses and with previous collections they would regularly go on sale because of their designer-ish price point due to the fact that he had to go to multiple factories to make each item and supply chain wise it didn't make a lot of sense. Gap, like Adidas with his shoes, eliminates his problems supply chain wise and logistically as they have a massive arsenal of factories that can produce his clothes at an affordable price where he can focus on creating his clothes instead of focusing on how he's going to make his clothes. This was apparent when Yeezy Season 2 deal with LVMH feel through as he didn't release the collection. Yeezy Season 8 morphed into the Yeezy Gap mainline which released two pieces before the Balenciaga Collab: the round jacket (which was from the season 8 show) and the perfect hoodie. If you looked at leaked images for the Yeezy Gap mainline which should be releasing sometime in the next year, all the pieces are pulled from Yeezy Season 8 as he wants to make these pieces as affordable and as accessible as possible. I understand you are indifferent to the Gap but like Adidas, they're a major piece in Kanye's vision and Kanye needs their resources in order to accomplish his vision.

Makes sense, and to be honest I didn't realise out of complete negligence so that's my bad. I still feel indifferent towards the whole collab at the moment in regards of the design being but out but I guess that backs up my point about Kanye wanting to make accessible clothes in terms of price and design. Thanks for letting me know this, I appreciate it!

As an oldie I remember Kanye’s Blogs in the late 2000’s use to randomly post things he was inspired by, whether Japanese artists or minimalist Scandinavian architecture. His aesthetic’s showed that in his creativity.

Skims is just an affordable version of Yeezy, if you were to dress in an all skins fit, it looks like Yeezy due to the greys, and mute tones, and basics solids that all go together especially the biker shorts and shirts. Which makes sense because Kanye made the logo and Basically the aesthetic. It’s not 100% but deff 75% having the same style.

great vid, only part i disagree with is when you said drop the politics, focus on yeezy - im unable to see how his politics would differentiate from his overall world view that gets channelled into his design process. I believe he needs to go deeper into his politics, his faith, his worldview bc thats the inspiring stuff we've been seeing on the ye s8. the reality is that its safer not to, to protect urself from public criticism but that doesnt seem like a good enough reason to me

I really wonder how much Kanye’s actual eye for design is influential, versus his influence as an individual and how that then translates into people throwing more attention on his design. He comes up with good pieces and obviously has his own taste, but I don’t think of him as a fashion revolutionary, rather some sort king of horizontal growth

I don’t think you were right about shoes not conjuring some idea a culture or a style or sub culture. In the United States the Jordan is associated with not just basketball but black American culture . The Nike brand (shoes) is norm-core for Americans but in India it’s more like lux ath. We have many Sandles and mule brands that give people that relaxed hippie vibe or they even associate you with a certain class of people. Finally combat boots (not guidis or Rick Ect..) are associated with the grunge or alternative scene or even goths. At least in the United States.

I thoroughly enjoyed the video, but I'd have to disagree with you saying that shoes aren't associated with cultural things though. For example, the Air Jordan 11 is associated with Michael Jordan's role in Space Jam, the Adidas Superstar is associated with the Run DMC era of Hip-Hop, the Nike Air Mags are associated with the character of Marty McFly in Back to the Future, and the New Balance 992 is associated with Steve Jobs- he was known to unveil new Apple Products in a pair of NBs and a black turtleneck. There are plenty of other examples, but these are the ones that I could think of. Keep up the good work!
@fashionlover4
@fashionlover4 2 жыл бұрын
Well I said that there are examples just that they aren't as strong as the associations we have for clothing. Like a lot of clothes are associated with cultural movements and personalities, the examples you provided are shoes that are associated with specific moments or people which is a lot more niche. Thanks for your input and support!
@metro3ds35
@metro3ds35 2 жыл бұрын
@@fashionlover4 You said that "shoes aren't ever associated with cultural things and ideas". I can understand why you feel that way because you don't seem to care about footwear, but shoes could possess stronger cultural relevance than clothes, depending on the person that wears them. Saying that shoes do not have cultural associations as strong as clothing is simply opinion based and does not represent how everyone else may feel. During the 80s, the majority of the youth in America were sporting Adidas tracksuits with a pair of Adidas Superstars due to Run DMC's influence- that is definitely a cultural movement. Sneakers can also display one's personality as well. You said yourself that you aren't a fan of the Yeezy 700 yet you love the foam runner- this displays that you prioritize innovation and ingenuity rather than a shoe with a typical dad shoe build. People who submerge themselves in the Grunge culture typically wear Doc Martens, which displays their personality and love for Rock music. I would recommend the channel NachoAverageFinds if you'd like to learn more about sneaker culture and the beauty within it.

I will be studying fashion design this September so I plan to start producing my own clothes later down the line and be the change that I want to see in the fashion industry. I would love to start up an artist collective similar to how Demna did with Vetements except work independently to the industry and also work towards some sort of reform. I won't go into it too much as I plan to do all this over the course of my entire career.

How to say this without saying it...Think about how the brand name stands in correlation with style of clothes that is put on the runway. The early work I mean. The early work is always most sincere one.

i don’t think it’s fair to say that shoes don’t have an association of things when so much black culture is built off shoe and specifically sneaker design and culture. i would even go as far to say that sneakers have a more significant and definable cultural impact and implications than any other individual clothing item. even outside of black culture shoes are so culturally significant, they’re literally the backbone of all manual labour and the working class.
@choerrybomb2195
@choerrybomb2195 Жыл бұрын
shoes are inherently political even more so than clothes. shoes define subcultures (punk lace code, sneaker culture, class/labour specific shoes, goth) all mainstream consumption of shoes are informed by cultural and political framing that people may not be aware of when buying a pair of nikes from a mall but have undoubted affected their purchase decision. you signal so much about yourself socially and politically by what shoes you wear and i think that is actually due to the boundary of the format making the purpose of the shoes very visible and readable from even those that aren’t invested in knowing the content.
@choerrybomb2195
@choerrybomb2195 Жыл бұрын
the breaking of convention through wearing of shoes outside of the original context is probably one of the most visible breaks of fashion convention because of that obvious context. if you are somebody wearing gumboots to a restaurant it’s obvious to everyone viewing that you are doing something outside of social convention. the history of sneakers being integrated into a high fashion context is also the breaking of one of those conventions however we aren’t as aware of it as a younger generation cause it has been an ongoing thing from black designers and the community and also a product of the commodification of black culture into a high fashion context but 20/30 years ago kanye would be ridiculed for his sneaker designs in a high fashion context by white fashion elites.

I made a tiktok on him a while back. I think he lacks a bit of self-awareness and has a big ego. He does come up with some good ideas, not all fashion has to be practical but I'm not the biggest fan of his particular style. It's a bit primitive and I feel like he could create better, more tangible garments if he took inspo from the objects he uses rather than just using the object as is. I haven't paid much attention to him recently so can't say I know what's he doing rn.

Kanye has a long history with the Gap. Early in his career, his sort of schtick was that he used to work at the Gap but got fired/ quit? because he wasn't able to achieve upward mobility in a more meaningful way. If you listen to his earlier works you can hear some of the frustration/limitations he felt from the corporate side of the company while working at the Gap and pursuing a music career at the same time. As pinned said, he's always been interested in producing fashion and he sort of had on-the-job training during his time at the Gap so, it makes sense that he's circling back to something he initially really wanted.
@fashionlover4

From what I know he worked there in customer service when he was pursuing his music career. I personally don't see that as a strong justification to go back I guess as he had a pretty elementary role.
