Saera had clear attention seeking behaviour, and needed a parent that was actively with her, encouraging her good behaviour. Instead she got distant busy parents, and was left to be raised by servants and people who had no power to discipline or reward her. She had no trust in her parents, so once she believed she was in big trouble, she tried to run instead trusting that her parents hadn't fully abandoned her. And Jaehaerys kept proving her fears correct.

Its heart breaking to read. Its worse to deal with in person ( worked in a pediatric cancer unit ). The worst though is either because of regulations or not enough time you can't get them the one thing they would say would comfort them. My husband and I got our mini poodle certified as a therapy dog though and she used to go cuddle lonely kids in my unit. We found her broken in a gutter but she was the best little dog. Brought a lot of joy to kids who really needed a cuddle and dog kisses.

Jaehaerys biggest mistake was to conduct the council of 101 AC. Proving him to be old and weak, and lords thinking they have some power to choose who sits over the throne. Had jaehaerys himself heard and decided succession matters it would not bolden the strength of lords of realm to defy the word of throne later . I know jaehaerys was so old and weak after alyssane died , he did not want to do anything with matters of succession or ruling the kingdoms, maybe he conducted the council to convince everyone on one decision and since that decision was taken where everyone was party no one could complain later. It might look good as a short term decision to avoid civil war tension but in reality it had a long term effect which in turn would divide the house of dragon

@@kap2652 maybe you are right, we can't blame jaehaerys, setting up the council was a good move by his son vhagon, preventing civil war, where everyone was party to the decision so none can back down saying "we were not invited" or "you cheated us by taking decision unilaterally" , it's viserys fault, when he himself was chosen as the heir because of his "paternal lineage" why did he go out of the way to name his daughter as heir, despite having a son ? breaking the precedent ruling which was set up at the great council . Viserys chose his "blood" over everything that stood and that was a fatal mistake.

2:39:00 the death of Aemon has historical precedent in our own world. Several Kings and Lords were killed by archer/crossbow fire and in some of the cases was an fluke, and accident of faith in which the arrow struck a weaker part of their armor (i.e. the neck or the eyes through the visor). Also historical scouting parties would have take pot-shots at the leader of the opposite faction if somehow they would manage to identify him. All this implies that most likely Aemon did die because he was unlucky and/or careless and not because some conspiracy... However the conspiracy might have have become more active after his death since, his death made it much simpler to eradicate the rest of the Targatyen's

But him as a prince should have one of best armors if not the best. It should be especialy hard hit him on a dragon and almost impossible with normal arrows. It could have been extremely bad luck on par the one who pierced Meraxes on the eye. I really doubt the Targaryens would go to war like the do on TV series or Daenerys is forced to do without a good armor. They should have ones espeacialy made to protect them from arrows(even some strongers ones) because that is the main weapon against a dragon and it's riders. The only ones I doubt they would have protections is against ones like the one reached meraxes (an iron bolt shoot from a scorpion). Besides Aemon was there another dragon rider who died from an arrow? The conspiracy theories are cooler than being unlucky or dying from friend fire in so acident.

@@RubyAPBT Conspiracies are part of our real world and they try to provide convoluted explanations to simple scenarios or better said we attempt to give people more credit than they worth... RR Martin is taking inspiration from real-world events/history, so, I think is unlikely he creates convoluted conspiracies since in most cases they don't really work with real people... Note. This does not mean that there are no conspiracies (100% there are, since, people with similar agenda's might just make deals to achieve a common goal) but they are not the norm... As for the quality of armor... well he might have been a prince but even the best harness has weaknesses that can be magically exploited (and most likely Bloodraven used magical arrows to kill the Blackfires)

Without a doubt. They were working for Otto. My guess is, they sold out due to better prospects. Maybe they were promised wealth, status, or power. I think they were also upset because Viserys had little regard for them as shown in the first episode. They probably wanted to be taken seriously on the council and have more of a say. That's also why they kept him drugged with Milk of the Poppy. To keep him sidelined until the day he died. Effectively putting Alicent and her father in charge. The statues and seven-pointed star showed the onlookers where the Hightowers stood on matters of faith, law, and justice. Faith that the people (commoners and lords/ladies alike) adhered to, showing they put the people first and foremost above all else (so the commoners think). They'll do what's in the best interest of the realm. Faith that Viserys ignored in favor of 'visions' and 'prophecy.' He may have cared about the people, but House Targaryen always came first. He often ignored their advice. They like to think they know all the answers. As you can also see in the first episode. They're a bit egotistical and don't like to be questioned or second-guessed. They also didn't like the leeway the King showed his ruthless brother. As seen after the raid led by Daemon. So, in their mind they probably think it's for the 'greater good.' As well as having their voice heard on the council and whatever else Otto may have promised them. Also, the order of Maesters and the Hightowers have a history. Being that the Citadel (seat of the Maesters) was granted to them by Otto's ancestor, Urrigon Hightower. So, if you were the Maesters and were constantly being ignored, disrespected, and disregarded as well as being tired of Targaryens seemingly abusing their power. Who would you follow? How would you make sure the Hightowers gain power whilst keeping the dangerous and uncontrollable Targaryen (Daemon) far from the throne? Don't forget Targaryens typically don't get illnesses suffered by the common man. As shown when Daemon (whilst wounded no less) touched the Crabfeeder without thought, bare handed. Crabfeeder who had grayscale which is easily contracted and spread. Maesters have access to several herbs and ingredients used for various poisons and tonics (part of their job). That's why he was the only one who caught that disease, it was crafted and administered to him and him alone. That's why he never recovered and why no one else, not even the maesters, Otto, or the Queen who were in constant contact with the king, got it. With each 'treatment' he got worse. While they remained suspiciously immune. They didn't seem too worried about contracting it. Which is odd for a disease they claimed to know nothing about. They weren't exactly careful. Look at how grayscale was treated in comparison. Very cautious. Instead of poisoning him which would have aroused suspicion as well as Daemon's wrath, they concocted a disease that no one would recognize. Unfortunately for them, Daemon still suspects foul play none the less. He's not stupid. For whom else gains the most upon Viserys' death and the Hightowers succession? He knew Otto would stop at nothing in order to gain power. He also knew the maesters helped him achieve it. Hoping to outplay Daemon and keep him far from the throne as well as serving their own interests. It may be Aegon who sits the throne but make no mistake, it's Otto who rules. Similar to how Tywin controlled Joffrey in Game of Thrones. For the maesters, siding with the Hightowers was the safer bet.

I think it’s more likely the Lords are just thinking with a patriarchal mindset and that the crown should go from male to male no matter what, primogeniture. After the Dance I definitely could see a conspiracy to keep the dragons from returning. This of course will make the Targaryens like everyone else and they could be removed if desired. if we're already talking about jaehaerys and part of alysanne, I really don't like what they did to their sister rhaena, even though rhaena allowed jaehaerys to actually take the throne without any problem even though it should have gone to her as regent and her eldest daughter who she had with ageon the Uncrowned, instead of returning both daughters to her, Jahaerys decided to uphold the decision of Maegor, who was considered a usurper, to let one sister continue her studies at the septe where he had the power to cancel it, he did not do it, and to keep the other one in the king's landing as his successor, which is to some extent understandable and I have the smallest problem, but what pissed me off the most was Alyssane that when Jahaerys decided to return Aerea, she later flew to the dragon rock and instead of first trying to help the mother and daughter understand each other, she decided to ask if she could take Aerea back to the king's landing, she decided to take the child which rhaena recovered. instead of trying to talk to her sister so that she would be more open towards her daughter, show her more feelings, and also talk to aerea to try to get closer to her mother or at least help her understand her, rhaena loved her daughters, that's for sure, and also her siblings . jahaerys and alyssane were very good rulers but they weren't really good siblings or parents to their daughters considering what happened to them

Like Tytos Lannister, Viserys really fucked up. Sadly, unlike Tywin, Daemon was further stripped of power and not given the chance to strengthen the Dragon rule. Instead, Viserys allowed discord and politicking to lessen his bloodline and claim that he was acutely aware of and did nothing to stamp out. His very first mistake was keeping Otto Hightower on as Hand of the King. Good willed, kind heart, but he is the first in the lynchpin that brought the doom of the Targaryens. Thankfully, we have Jon, who will repopulate and no doubt bring about another golden Targaryen age.

One could say that maesters fucked everything up by getting rid out of dragons, ´cause dragons are cool... Buuuut by priving Aegon IV and Aerys II his dragons, maesters did a service to westeros. If someone holds a power so massive that no one else could wield it, and so, no one could contest that power sounds like a shitty world to live in.

The whole issue of inheritance is that the lords were very scared that if a woman can have throne, because she is the eldest and first child, then someday the ruler would change the laws of succession which would not only upend thousands of years of tradition for them, but invite huge conflict and infighting as suddenly older sisters could try to claim the lordship and lands that their younger brother had been ruling because of this rule suddenly in place. And husbands who would try to use their wives claim to take the lands, which is why there was probably some resistance to having Rhaenys as ruler besides the obvious extreme sexism, because of Corlys becoming king consort through Rhaenys and the idea of the ruling family name changing to velaryon which Corlys himself hoped for when he was discussing the matter of succession with Viserys about Laenor and Rhaenyra’s children. Jaeharys meanwhile was sexist as all medieval society was to varying degrees, he favoured the status quo, not rocking the boat too much and doing things that could invite conflict, chaos and war. Like dragons, he didn’t let the women get dragons, because he was scared their husbands would use their wives to become dragonrider houses other than Targaryen, which could lead to war and rebellion if for example the lannisters got dragonrider as a wife and their children too become riders. It is sexist, but he was also thinking of the fact houses want power, and many lords wanted the Targaryens as brides or husbands to get dragos.Although in Saera’s case he was probably just afraid she would do something violent or bad with a dragon to command, like burning sept in old town or trying to take some lords castle as her own.

2:53:05 You can't possibly be ignorant to the fact that Westerosi succession laws are agnatic. 2:53:55 They are clearly referring to established Westerosi practice. Baelon, and after his death Viserys, being named heir was only controversial because Rhaenys made an issue of it, and because she was pregnant; were she a lesser woman, with a poorer marriage, her being heiress wouldn't have even been considered.

I wonder if there is supposed to be any link between Alyssa and Tyrion Lannister? I could be climbing a fruitless tree here but just indulge me a moment. They both have one green and one purple eye (I think) and both have damage to thier noses... Is this supposed to be a clue or is it just one of those things where two characters have similar traits but are in no way connected? Could it be that by giving them both similar features George might have been trying to group them as likes but not as connected likes... sorta like they where both different to how they where expected to be... Him in his physical difference and the fact he is treated like an out cast and her in that she was not a traditional lady and enjoyed things which where not "normal" for girls. Just a rambling thought, I could be completely off coz I barely know anything about the story overall... I didn't really watch the shows, never read the books, but lately I have been enjoying the world through explanation and discussion videos on the topic here on KZbin... I am not sure why I am compelled to watch videos about storys that I have never engaged in but I really do enjoy it. I am autistic and I am trying to be a writer, I think this kind of content helps me to learn writing concepts in a fun way... I have also been enjoying content on Dune and the Hunger games on youtube. Anyway, I just noticed those similarities and had to ask 😊

I love your videos man. I especially love Jaehaerys’ time as king. It really does just go down hill from here. However, I do not believe in the grand Maester conspiracy as much as you. Sometimes a sausage is just a sausage and things happen. Princesses die of sickness and princes die in battle. It is not so hard to believe. Nor do I believe GRRM would write something so simple yet complex at the same time. It would be nice if we could blame the realm’s problems on a group of old elitist and sexist men but accidents just happen sometimes. I also do not wholly agree that Jaehaerys was as large a cause for the Dance as you do. Had Baelon succeeded Jaehaerys, it likely would not have happened. Had Viserys and Aemma had a son, it likely would not have happened. Had Viserys been a little smarter, it likely would not have happened. Who’s to say about Rhaenyra and her bastards being different but that too. The opposite is also true, Had Jaehaerys confirmed Rhaenys right as heir, that does not automatically mean no Dance happens. Viserys and Daemon could just as easily try and usurp her button Jaehaerys’ death or upon Rhaeny’s death and usurp her son…

I wonder if by giant white Leviathan they meant like the biblical, mythical giant sea creature (that always makes me think of either the Unagi or the creature from the Serpent’s Pass in ATLA), like a long skinny body, or whether they mean aggressive whales. There was a real whale in ancient times (I wanna say in the Mediterranean?) called Porphyros that terrorized the seas for half a century, sunk countless vessels and killed thousands of men, and had a bounty on its head so large it would have beggared the empire to pay it, but the losses they were experiencing through sunken trade vessels made the insane bounty worth it. Eventually it died, not at anybody’s hand, but the attacks stopped so either it got too old to continue, or was killed by another animal. Theories are that it was a sperm whale who had been injured so badly by a passing ship that he was outcast from him pod, and so he held a grudge for the rest of his life and spent all his time and energy on revenge. The losses caused by this one specific whale are the equivalent of hundreds of millions of dollars in today’s currency.

When the Royal Family forgets this is a job not a privilege. To rule their certain expectations if they fail to be met the will people will find another monarch. King Jaehaerys Targaryen understood this many of his children did not. The Targaryen were leech Lords, landlords of a foreign people. Refusing to interact or breed with them to keep their blood pressure from the comments. Jaehaerys the conciliator was the first true ruler of a people and not some landlord with a dragon.

Seems a bit obsessed with the maester's being masterminds. While i dont disregard the theory, its being pushed here to extremes, they are almost omnipotent by this history. The fact is people die, prince baelon VERY likely died of a burst appendix. An affliction that happens to people often and is serious, though often not deadly with todays medicine. In the princes time though, a death sentence. Similarly. Aemon dying from a crossbold, was likely just that, he was afterall on a war front.

The throne was not stolen from Rhaenys. The council decided on the purest Valyrian. viserys is a purer valyrian than rhaenys and is male, she doesn't even look like a targaryen with those black baratheon hair. Joffrey's legitimacy was questioned because he didn't have his father's hair, just like the strong bastards. Rhaenys, even though she isn't a bastard, still doesn't look like Targaryen enough to sit on the throne. Viserys is the result of a relationship between two of King Jaehaerys' childs and is married to his cousin - also Jaehaerys's granddaughter. there is more targaryan legitimacy in him than in rhaenys
