Mr. Jax, I'm so pleased you do not let labels define you. You are obviously very intelligent, articulate, and have a highly developed sense of self. We all learn and experience life differently. I'm very proud of you for destroying the notion we have to be one thing or another. Being ourselves is enough.

I totally agree with you. Labels can limit a person's potential.

I'm so glad this video popped up on my feed! I really enjoyed your insight, and I think you have such a relaxing voice to listen to. We are people first, and I think modern-day media is too focussed on making content bite-sized, including our personalities, when in reality we are complex beings that are constantly learning and changing.

Really agree with what you're saying here, in a similar boat with diagnosis that explain some of my challenges, but they shouldn't serve to limit my ability to get past them. I'm known in my daily life as being extremely social and outgoing despite it being conditioned masking done out of a need for survival and respect throughout my life. Despite my challenges I am able to thrive in many areas, and some labels/tags on a piece of paper shouldn't stand in my way from doing that when their whole purpose is to communicate my challenges clearly when getting healthcare or other types of assistance. Wishing you the best dude, and as always great stuff c:

😊 I like your view on labels and that our mind has the ability to define our existence by we might be telling ourselves. We have to treat ourselves better for things to go into a more positive outcomes. Only one that can change is ourselves 😊 interesting topic

Agreed. As you stated, the problem is letting the labels define us. Career, interests, looks, personality, etc . . . The function of a "label" is to provide insight into ourselves and offer ither people context. That's it. But, as you pointed out, we ourselves or others take it to the next level. I'm a doctor, I'm dyslexic, I'm pansexual, and so on. But, the fact is you aren't any of those things. You're someone who does that job. You're someone who has a learning hurddle they need to adapt to and overcome. You're someone who shows romantic interest in a greater variety of people. As usual, it just comes down to perspective and mindset. It is something many people struggle with (my self included) because we want a sense of belonging and external validation from others. But, once you focus internally and decide for yourself what you want and your own expectations, it helps to mitigate that reflex response of letting qualities about ourselves, our bodies, or our personalities act as defining character. Instead, just letting them be a thing on a long list of interests or attributes.

so all of these examples the label wasn't the problem, the, meaning ascribed to the label was the problem.

There are definitely pros and cons to labels. And those labels have various connotations. For instance a person labeled or diagnosed with ADHD would then allow the person some clinical understanding of what someone having ADHD may entail. Providing that understanding gives that person the skills to manage their ADHD. At the same time it should not limit or characterize that individual as “less than”. I like your comment “if I spoke to my friends like I sometimes speak to myself I truly wouldn’t have any friends.” We need to be kinder to ourselves. We make mistakes and we are only human after all. Labels assist us to do that human thing of classifying likes and dislikes, people, places and things. It's like putting a label on a Manila folder. We can't escape the urge to judge and affix a label to it. This involves the inner workings and stimulai in the brain. I'm getting far a field on the subject of labels which can be seen as helpful and useful and also divisive and dangerous.
