Hey Greg, I love all your videos. I just ran into this one randomly, but it's funny, I have noticed the same thing up here in Northern California with Lamb. My trees are very far out on an outback hill and I often don't get over there for quite some time, and I realized at some point that my lamb avocados were hanging on extraordinarily long. I believe mine held mature fruit on for an entire year or more. It might be that because ambient temperatures are a bit cooler up here that the fruit gets preserved on the tree even longer than typical So Cal locales. I pushed my Wurtz tree to the limit, and start historically picking mature fruit in May, a year after they set, and then left mature fruit on the tree for more than a year. I was still eating a few of them in the following June. As they were starting to drop substantially by that point, I just picked all of the remainder. Anyway, thanks for all your information. Maybe one of these days we can link up. I have a place down in Vista where I am starting 36 different varieties, followed by about 15 or so different mango cultivars all for some fun experimentation.

That's wild that the Wurtz held on that long. I didn't know Wurtz had that quality. Sounds like a very cool project in Vista. Thank you.

That's an excellent comment about the Lamb Hass holding for so very long up there as well. I'm very impressed with that hang time and last year I was surprised at the hang time of the Fuerte as well. In Anaheim, I have a neighbor is still picking Fuertes into June. I know they are edible in December. It sounds like neither one of those two really drop their fruit. That's amazing. I like your videos also.

A finely burnt corn tortilla and some salt🤤they look good to me. Right now pretty much all the avocados in the markets are from Mexico, and there not bad, but Pauma Valley, Fallbrook and the 78 on the way to Ramona those avocados are in a class of their own😉

Hi Greg, Glad to see you stored up some Lamb treasure for the winter. My Lamb is my largest tree so far, its about 15 ft tall. Its on the young side, been in the ground about 2 years, planted as a 15 gal. Last year it flowered very little and did not set any fruit. This year it has many flowers and I am hoping for some fruit. Lamb is a beautiful tree that makes large fruit. I wish it was more popular commercially. How tall is your Lamb? Thanks for sharing your late Lamb fruit. They look great for hanging so long.

Hi Sam, My Lamb is around 15 feet tall too. I prune it once or twice a year to keep it down to that height. I bet you get a lot of fruitset on your Lamb this spring. Going to be a tasty summer 2024 for you!

Hell yeah! No need for bacon. I pruned the lambs last month and some fruit came off so I stored the fruit to see how it would be - it was horrible. But I know you are eating the the “second” winter so I’m looking forward to that.

Good to know! Does prolonged fruit-hang hurt flower production?
@gregalderdotcom

If you let the entire crop hang, it will. That's what one trial using Hass found. But just picking incrementally and leaving some until late doesn't, as far as my observations of my own trees go.

Don't feel bad. They look big and ready now. It's an easy mistake to make. They'll get a lot more flavor if you wait to pick them until June or July.

Greg, I live in a frosty valley floor,San Marcos,Ca. my Lamb tree has a plethora of fruit but they are all green and hard.I guess they hang on the tree for over a year or have I really fouled up?They live under frost cloth from late November until March 1st.Thank you for the help.

Hi Susan, I should have made it clear in the video that this is the fruit's second winter. Your green fruit won't be ready until this summer. You'll see them starting to get black on their skin when they're ready to pick. Good luck with this cold!

My last purchase a # 15 Lamb end of August, have one that has its first production, about50 fruits, am considering stumping our young Mexicola Grande and grafting to Lamb, what do you think 🤔
@gregalderdotcom
@gregalderdotcom Жыл бұрын
Hi Frank, I'd do it. I'd rather eat late Lambs through the fall and early winter than Mexicola Grandes. You don't need the cold resistance of M.G. where you live. Lambs will hang later and later as the trees get bigger, from what I've seen.
