Industries like aviation already use systems thinking to dramatically improve the safety of complex processes. Why couldn’t schools do the same? Dr. Elizabeth Ekren discusses how the Swiss Cheese Model of systems thinking could create comprehensive, layered interventions to make school violence as rare as plane crashes. Dr. Elizabeth Ekren is currently a staff researcher at the Texas School Safety Center. She completed her Ph.D. in Development Studies, with a concentration in Social Anthropology, from the University of Bonn (Germany). She has B.A.s in Russian Language and Psychology from Yale University and an M.Sc. in Russian Studies from the University of Oxford (UK). In her past work, she has explored topics such as German refugees’ encounters with municipal welfare structures, Syrian slum-dwellers’ practical abilities to practice government-mandated health measures, and small business owners’ legal operating difficulties in post-communist countries. At the Texas School Safety Center, Dr. Ekren works to evaluate the effectiveness of school safety trainings and conduct research-based assessments on various school safety policy topics. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Top presentation. Risk assessment in any high risk enterprise is critical. And yet another recent KZbin video revealed how American cell tower maintenance deaths were attributed by the culture of corporate divestment resulting in hiring contractors... Many of whom had zero safety culture, training or mindset... And the LAW and the CORPORATION BOSSES don't care. They literally don't lose any sleep that their culture kills a bunch of Bubbas who rush to fulfill unreasonable contracts with insufficient training or oversight. Lady is so eloquent and correct. But she cares. The problem is half the population don't care. They'd rather keep their guns than save a child. Period.

As you continue on your Fabulous journey, you will start to see yourself more brightly. The resolution will improve every day. You will begin to know what is really important to you and what you can leave behind. It may be self-doubt that falls into the dim as your light increases. Gratitude and self-care will become more evident in your day-to-day. You will say goodbye to bad habits and recreate your environment so that it reflects who you are meant to be.

As an aircraft mechanic we were required to take a class called Human Factors. Instead of cheese, they used the analogy of a chain with 7 links. seven consecutive factors can cause a disaster. If any events are prevented, the disaster doesn't happen. Factors such as employees working too many hours, or not getting enough sleep. Personal problems at home, a harsh work environment, improperly maintained equipment, road rage in traffic, a poor turnover from one shift to another, shortcuts to procedures. restricted allotment of time. The list can go on forever.

Thank you for that info. Adding those 7 links to mechanical issues and you can see the progression better into the end result.

Thank you Dr. Ekren. Sounds good. Until you get all those safeguards in place and working, try to remember that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Arm the entire staff and train them to use those arms. The one factor that stands out to me is that whenever a bad guy shoots up a school is that nobody ever shoots back.

I think you missed the point. If things were done as Dr. Ekren proposed, there would be no need for the guns in the first place. Sounds like a better solution than yours no?

That was true in 1845. It was called the Wild West. And they were men. And the women and children lived in fear.
