The Levant is a mixing pot for religious and cultural diversity which has given the world incredible displays of civilization. Unfortunately the mismanagement of this diversity has at times given way to outbursts of conflict. This is particularly the case in the modern period. As European imperial forces started to interfere with the affairs of a declining Ottoman Empire that was proving incapable of solving its own internal issues, sectarian and ethnic tensions spilled over in episodes of extreme violence. A prominent early example took place in the summer of 1860 when Ottoman Syria was beset by a civil conflict between its Christian, Muslim and Druze inhabitants. Having lived together in relative peace for centuries, the different groups drew arms in clashes that saw tens of thousands of people get killed. The repercussions of the feud would go on to influence the Levant for decades to come. In the case of Lebanon specifically, it is not an exaggeration to say that it determined its future to the present day.

After watching a history video on the Lebanese civil war it’s a Vietnam style guerrilla war for everyone involved and solved basically nothing. After the port explosion it seems Lebanon’s economically collapsing. In my country of Canada I was surprised to learn of a historical Lebanese community in northern Alberta. Actually the number of lebanese in Brazil given by the embassies is hugely inflated. Estimates from actual research is more around 1 million for all descendants of any arabs including mixed, including syrian and lebanese, which makes more sense considering the relatively small number of immigrants overall. That only makes sense considering the number of immigrants (less than even japanese) and that they were urban folks with relatively small families. France, thus, certainly has more lebanese than Brazil does nowadays. Besides immigration to Brazil was way before the civil war, they weren't refugees.

Agnostic Syrian here, I grow up in Syria, where everyone respected other people's beliefs. Let's read history well and learn from it, and let's remember that external interference in many cases was the reason of our internal conflicts . What's happening in Syria and Lebanon is not natural, and soon, hopefully, all will be good and will live together in peace and prosperity. Both Syrians & Lebanese deserve a better life than this chaos.

I'm Armenian and have a Sunni friend from Damascus, who comes from a well off jewler family. His father always said that Armenians and generally Ortodoks Christians are the same and religion should not get in between. After 2011, they escaped towards Cairo, losing everything because of ISIS. His father died due to stress, and for 9 years my friend had worked his way to come to America, and found an Armenian uncle from Aleppo who became his guide and translator and through him we discovered each other. Syria is my heart, Lebanon is my bones, and Armenia is my soul, we are amazingly similar. Also, Armenians took part in both sides unfortunately, we supported the Palestinians and Syrians through ASALA and the Maronites through the Dashnak party.

Its weird seeing this as a Serb from the Balkans. At the same time we were also under the Ottomans but as a Autonomous state De jure and independent De facto. In the same period with Muslims killing Christians in the Levant the same was happening with Christians killing Muslims in the Balkans. No wonder the Ottomans were paralyzed, wherever they turned there was a rebellion of whatever you want religion or ethnicity. I have spent time in the middle east and was shocked how much i had in common with Syrians Muslims and Christians. They just ask "You hate Turk?" "Yes" "Here arak"

That's not true. The embassy exaggerates the number for some reason but Brazil only received 200 thousand arab immigrants ever, less than japanese (and not all were lebanese although more than 95% Christian). So there's no way there's more arabs than japanese. Plus, polls from IBGE show 1m estimated arab descendants. Which is consistent with immigration numbers. Although this war killed many people, it had one positive thing, which is that it made the Levant travel to all countries of the world and introduce the world to the prosperous culture and civilization of the Levant. I am a Syrian from Latakia... A Christian friend of mine from Damascus told me that some of the His grandfather’s relatives immigrated to Colombia about 100 years ago and settled there.. Today this family is one of the most important families in Colombia...... I have other friends from Damascus, Homs, Tartous, Aleppo, Hama, and Latakia. Their relatives immigrated to other countries such as Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, and Canada. And Australia... And I can say that the number of Syrian expatriates around the world is greater than the population of Syria.... Does any of the readers of my comment have Syrian origin? 😊

Great video. Most do not realize that a couple of centuries ago, the Christian population (all sects combined) of the Lebanon region was only 15%, higher in Mount Lebanon proper. After the events in Damascus, a lot of Syrian Christians migrated into the Lebanese mountain area, and combined with a boom of birthrates, Christians rose very quickly into becoming 50% of the entire Lebanon region, not just the Mountain. Maronites have always operated similarly to Druze, in that both see themselves as rare ethno-religious tribes that belong in the isolated Mountain. Unlike the Orthodox who share a united identity with other Arabs, especially other Shami Orthodox, the Maronites have always acted as a tribe. Even when Lebanon was formed by the French, the patriarchs chose Shi'a-majority countryland and Sunni port cities over the Orthodox Christian Wadi al-Nasara just to the north in Syria, as the patriarchs did not want the Orthodox to be the majority of the land, but would rather see Maronites as the elites of a mixed land.

Both would be considered as sister churches. I belong to the Lebanese Forces , aka the Maronite militant group. Unfortunately soon Lebanon will become majority Syrian and Palestinian and Muslim. It sucks, we lost the civil war and have moved from 75% Christian to now 35% and still decreasing since emigration and illegal immigrants. Rich / middle class Lebanese people are leaving , and of course the majority of people who aren’t poor are Christians (Muslims are considerably poorer on average). Muslim and Christian Lebanese hate both Syrians and Palestinians and they want them out , they just take advantage of Lebanon’s significantly better infrastructure - but the government is useless .
