How LeBron out-Godfathered Pat Riley and potentially sparked the Heat's Finals fun | NBA Countdown

Jackie MacMullan, Brian Windhorst and Wright Thompson dissect LeBron James signing with the Miami Heat as well as his eventual departure from the team. With Pat Riley known in NBA circles as “The Godfather” due to free agent acquisitions and cut-throat dealings with players he no longer deems useful. When LeBron shocked the world by leaving Miami in 2014, it may have been the first time Riley had been out-Godfathered and gave him the spark to build one more championship team without the Big 3.

I always considered it odd how people dislike him moving teams when most people are considered Labor and he was doing to management what management does to labor. It's crazy to me that because a GM created the big 3 of Boston it's less offensive than Miami's big 3. Because the Lakers and Celtics were able to draft or trade for talent it's less troubling than a group of guys deciding to play together.

That’s fair. Wade took a discount when he opted out under the understanding that it would be used to fill in the pieces the roster needed. And they didn’t do that and gave Bosh a max long term deal. And then of course not giving him a deal that Chicago gave him. That’s the way it’s always done and probably will remain that way

Indeed. LeBron even has to tell everyone that it's one of the biggest games in his career to make the championship run seem more legitimate, that he actually had to fight hard even with top player AD on his team. AD does 50% of the work. Lebron does perhaps 30%. Just look at game 3. When AD didn't show up, they lost. AD was the deciding factor in the game. People are saying Lebron deserves FMVP because he's consistent. Well yea, he's consistently the second best player of the team. But that doesn't earn him the FMVP. The fact that they have to do all these just to make Lebron seem like the more impactful player is just embarrassing. Lebron should give the FMVP to AD if they happen to win and not put a stain to his name by accepting the FMVP if they happen to win.

Finals MVPs are about the least important thing to measure, even Iguodala won one against Lebron: 2015 (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks): Iguodala: 16.3 - 5.8 - 4.0 - 1.3 - 0.3 James: 35.8 - 13.3 - 8.8 - 1.3 - 0.5 Neither was Kawhi's performance in 2014: Leonard: 17.8 - 6.4 - 2.0 - 1.6 - 1.2 James: 28.2 - 7.8 - 4.0 - 2.0 - 0.4

A couple of years into Lebron's time with Miami, he and some other players tried to get Spoelstra fired; Riley stood up for his coach and let everyone know that Riley was in charge of the team, and not Lebron or any other player. So, it's not that surprising that Lebron wanted to go somewhere where he thought his input into issues usually reserved for a team's GM would be more "appreciated."
