This might be the most important lethality test I've ever seen. Aside from some of the range tests, I typically watch purely for entertainment. This is one that's actually important for my decision-making. It's good to know that you can increase your ammo count and still be pretty devastating if they're not wearing a lot of clothing.

I don't have slugs because I live in a townhouse and that seems nightmarish for me. I do keep a .40 next to my bed with 3 loaded magazines and mounted light/laser. I actually like that you used the mini #4 to see that deep penetration without pass-thru, makes for a more logical home defense when you live in a multi-unit complex. Most tell me to use my 9mm but I know that will punch through all kinds of stuff and worries me, and clearly so will even mini slugs lol.

A 9mm from a handgun will penetrate more barriers than a 556 will from a short barrel. Why? The 556 will fragment and lose its momentum. The 9mm retains most if not all of the weight and will just keep chugging til something stops it or it loses enough velocity.

not only the above. but a buck shot hits many spots were a 9mm hits one spot. so if just the impact with no penetration is going to drop most in pain. best of all you have follow up shots. with little worry ant shooing someone next door. but next do a test using a calk wallboard and even plywood wall.

The minishells are basically regular 2 3/4 shells without the cushion part of the wad. Ones I have shot did not feel like they had much less recoil, if they do it's maybe because they're only like 1200 fps versus 1600 fps of full size loads. I make my own minishells in 12 gauge and 20 gauge.

The Defender Tactical Universal Shell Loader is definitely a better buy with a 590 Shockwave than the 590s Shockwave. That little piece on the 590s can pop off. And while the opsol adapter is cheap, it also must be taken out to use 2 3/4 or 3 inch shell. The defender tactical doesn't have to be taken out.

DELTA 88? Never heard of that one. That being said, WHERE are you finding 1.75 shells? Everytime I check, Bass Pro, Wally World, Academy, Sportsmans Warehouse, my local gun shops, NO ONE has anything! Even Federal's website shows out-of-stock. Aguila are just STOOPID expensive if you can fund them! Btw, the Oppsol Adapter ain't cutting it. The Critical Defense full adapter kit is much better functioning BUT I have questions about longevity. Aa I mentioned earlier, it's just better to skip these shot grip "novelties" and go with a standard shoulder stock shooting readily available and CHEAPER 2.75 loads. My BEAR CREEK ARSENAL 7.5 AR Pistol in 300 AAC is my GO-TOO home defense now and will soon have a "can" to go with it.

The Federal Shorty Slugs put out 1400 ft lbs of energy and because they are the shortest of the all the mini-shells, you can put 9 in a Mossberg Shockwave or 500/88. But yeah, if those Aguila slugs are working for you they are also thumpers no doubt. I am not into shotguns without a butt stock. I'm 65 and it works best for me to have a stock. I feel extremely confident operating that way. I was given one of the very first Mossberg's in 12ga that had a pistol grip and short barrel via a death in the family and the family was getting rid of the fellow's stuff. I found a folding stock with built in ammo carrier to replace the pistol grip. Replaced the fore end with one with a built-in light. Slapped a HiViz over the barrel sight on it. It is a decent little gun now. I use 00-buck 2&3/4 ammo. It works fine out to about 20-25yds for best results, more than what its purpose is. I get the utility of the mini shells. Were I in a situation where penetration was a critical concern, I would get a Mossberg made to handle those shells. It could be quite viable.

I just tonight found this video, thank you so much for posting it! I have the original Shockwave 590, and have always felt that it's real purpose is to be fired from the waist! As in close quarter combat... clearing buildings, moving in and out of hallways, around interior corners, naturally held at waist level for the mobility to do that. You aren't going to sweep a building with this gun held up to your head, so why would you take the extra time it takes, in a super quick life-or-death situation, to bring your Shockwave up to your head, aim, then fire? A shotgun is for close quarter engagement, if the target is maybe 20 ft from you, and you cannot hit it holding this gun at waist level, laser or not, maybe more practice with it is needed! And for home defense, I also think mini-shells are perfect. Much less chance of over penetration, and one or two 00 buckshot mini shells in an attacker will definately slow him down, let alone stop him!

I’m a small caliber rifle carbine guy myself (because of: accuracy, mag capacity, ability to add accessories, ammunition cost, speed of follow up shots, soft armor penetration, lighter weight if same length, and speed to load/reload) but for shotgun guys I do recommend the 2 3/4” #4 for home defense as the pellets have reduced over penetration compared to 00 or slug. BTW a quality 5.56 55 grain varmint tip is still better to avoid over penetration at close range.

Good work overall. I usually turn to Paul Harrell for these types of videos, but he doesn't take the mini shell or the Shockwave seriously. I've felt from the beginning that these could be very effective home defenders with the right ammo and the combination of the mini shell buck shot with the Shockwave platform is just about as good as you could ask for in a small home or apartment where over penetration could be an issue. I've also found that running a Weapon Mounted Light on the Shockwave platform is vital for target ID and also makes a wicked fast aiming aid after sundown. Much faster than the laser after dark.

I use a laser with a dot-and-ring on my home shotgun. It has a light as a bonus, but it's way too bright in my opinion. Temporarily blinding myself at the same time I let an intruder know exactly where I am and give them a nice aiming point seems like a terrible idea. I saw an "expert" who was showing how to clear your house and his method was to flash his light on and off really fast every time he reached a corner, which is about the dumbest thing you can possibly do. Ruin your night vision, put afterimages in it, and let intruders know you're coming and where you are all at once!

I don’t run lights on my firearms, because you have to point the weapon to use the light. If you were to hear a bump in the night, and use your weapon mounted light, you are automatically engaging your target, and if it’s not a foe(like a roommate, or family member), even if you don’t shoot them, it can be considered menacing. Mas Ayoob covers that subject on the Wilson Combat channel, and has strongly recommended against weapon lights for many years.

@@ltx383 You're missing the point. If you need a home defense weapon, and most should, the Shockwave is a terrible choice. Any reliable, inexpensive full stock shotgun is a far, far, far better choice if you want a shotgun for that purpose. Personally I think an AR is a better choice but others prefer shotguns. @@ltx383 my point exactly, it's better than a sharp stick but way worse than a shoulder mounted shotgun. If you're going to buy a gun for home defense, choose the best option possible. Choosing a Shockwave over an 870 or any host of similar shotguns is a very bad idea. By all means buy one as your second gun if you want but don't buy one as your first choice for defense because they are much, much better choices for that use. The shockwave is better than nothing but it's still a really bad choice for home defense so when videos make them seem otherwise it's worth mentioning that they are not. Oh and FYI, I've never played call of duty. I learned what I know as a police officer doing real building searches looking for real bad guys with real guns and in real life it's real scary. You don't want a hip fired short shotgun with poor accuracy and even worse ammo capacity when your life and the life of your family is in danger.

The whole point of home/ self defense is to stop the threat from harming you or your family. The use of a firearm in this instance is sometimes a split second reaction. Do you know where your family is at that exact moment you pull the trigger? Who’s outside, neighbors, whatever. You’re responsible for the final destination of that bullet/slug/pellets. You’re going to have a believable, accountable explanation for your actions to law enforcement/attorney, if and when that time ever comes if you’re claiming self-defense when using lethal force. I have a Mossberg Maverick at home loaded with the short buck shots specifically for this purpose because I feel it meets the criteria that I have explained above. Great video though, on what these shells do to the torso

Very nice video! As you mentioned each shot except the 7.5 was lethal. However I have just a few of thoughts. During the course of the civil war men were killed by 36 cal. pistol lead ball rounds traveling at velocities of approx. 750 FPM. The shot placement is important and it doesn't have to over penetrate to stop/kill the threat. Quite a few American soldiers died from non over penetrating 9mm wounds during WWII. Let's not forget the bird shot, using #4 or #6 bird shot aimed at the shoulder ball joint or the hip (close range) will certainly stop anyone. It could even take the arm completely off. Stopping a threat doesn't always require a kill shot! Those just my thoughts and would choose a non lethal shot as my first choice.

Howdy, really cool video and I appreciate the effort to realistically assess lethality of the 12ga minishell. One problem I see commonly with these kind of tests is - people aren't going to generally be unclothed when they pose a threat requiring deadly force self defense. Not saying that can never hapen, but it's going to be rare. Need to see this test with a ballistic torso wearing a t-shirt, under a flannel shirt, under a coat - or a t-shirt under a leather coat. Thick clothing or multiple layered clothing. THAT will provide much more realistic data. Thank you for the share, very cool stuff and keep it up.
